Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

Auckland. —Barr Brown, commission agent, reports stolen from his trap in Tanner’s stables a rug, value £2; since recovered by Constable W. Harvey from M. Lundon, secondhand dealer, to whom it was sold by a man, name unknown , about 5 ft. 6 in. high, medium build, fair complexion, cleanshaved except fair moustache, dressed in dark suit and blue cap. Identifiable.

Devonport.— R. and W. Hellaby, butchers, report that on the 29th or 30th ultimo their shop was broken into, and 3s. stolen from the till.

Onehunga. —Charles Cato reports stolen from the Onehunga Wharf or from the s.s. “ Takapuna,” between the 16th and 18th July last, a carpet-bag containing a pair of evening shoes, a pair of new tan boots and a pair half-soled, a pair of black-leather boots (new) value 18s. lid., a suit of pyjamas, and a polo cap; a gladstone bag, recovered; there was stolen from it a woollen singlet, pyjamas, a black-silk sash, a pair of woollen drawers, a woollen muffler, and a razor and brush: total value, £7 9s. sd. Complainant is now serving a sentence in Auckland Gaol.

Napier. —Mrs. Hector McKenzie, Waghorne Street, and Elizabeth Lawrie, Clarendon Hotel, report stolen from the Foresters’ Hall, on the 3rd or 4th ultimo, a silver hat-brooch, stag’s-head pattern, property of Mrs. McKenzie, value 165.; and a silver coin brooch about the size of a shilling, with a flag and “ Transvaal war ” stamped on one side and roughrider and horse on the other, property of E. Lawrie, value 2s.

Palmerston North. —George Grant, school-teacher, reports stolen from the schoolhouse, on the 7th or Bth ultimo, a nearly new black sac coat; value, £2 10s.

Palmerston North. —Joe Kwong Lee and Co., storekeepers, report that on the sth or 6th instant their shop was broken into and three £1 notes and about 15s. in silver stolen. Suspicion attached to Young Chung Lunn, a native

of China, about fifty years of age, medium build, about 5 ft. 4 in. high ; supposed identical with discharged prisoner Lunn, alias George Howe. (See Police Gazette, 1899, page 204.)

Wellington. —William Spencer and Harry Spire Powell report stolen from a shed in Bolton Street, between the 25th and 27th ultimo, two kits of carpenters’ tools; value, £3 each (recovered). A man who gave the name of W. Millar pawned Spencer’s kit at Metz’s pawn-shop and Powell’s at Smart’s. Offender is supposed to be a carpenter, forty years of age, about 5 ft. 5 in. high, stiff build, very dark complexion, broad features, dark moustache, has a few days’ growth of beard and whiskers ; dressed in dark-tweed clothes, and dark cap ; shabby appearance. Identifiable.

Wellington. —Donald Munro, contractor, reports stolen from his gravel-pit in Oranakapapa Road, between the 15th and 18th ultimo, a gravel-screen with round iron bars, 6 ft. high by 2 ft. 10 in. wide ; value, £2 10s.

Wellington. —The Collector of Customs reports stolen from No. 12 room, Government Buildings, between the 25th and 27th ultimo, a French lever brass clock, No. 6611 on the inside, about 5 in. in diameter, has a cover over each keyhole at the back ; value, 10s.

Christchurch. —Henry B. Jones and William W. Keighley, carpenters, report stolen from a shed in Avonside two kits of carpenters’ tools, since recovered by Constables J. Fahey and W. Hill; pawned by a man who gave the name of W. Wilson at Bayne’s pawn-office and W. Reid at Shrimpton’s. Offender is about thirty-five years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. high, full features, medium build, dark moustache; was wearing a hard black-felt hat.

Christchurch. John J. Alexander, machine agent, Kaiapoi, reports stolen from his cart in Manchester Street, on the 27th ultimo, a yellow gladstone bag, containing eighteen white-metal clooks, various patterns and sizes, in cardboard boxes, which are numbered respectively 09707, 09708, 385/5, 7588, 7564, 3208, 7563, 7589 ; boxes only identifiable : total value, £7 11s. 3d. Suspicion attached to Cecil, alias Babs, Payne, a native of New Zealand, labourer, twentysix years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, emblem on left forearm, &c. Woolston. —George Bonnington, chemist, reports stolen from a clothes-line, on the 3rd or 4th instant, six linen shirts, four marked G.E.0.8. near the neck, the others marked L.B. ; two large linen table-cloths; a gentlemen’s night-shirt, the collar torn ; six large bath-towels, some with red and some with white borders : value, £6 10s.

Kurow. —John McCone, labourer, reports supposed stolen from his trap at Duntroon or Kurow, on the 13th or 14th July last, a well-worn pigskin saddle, makers Hodge and Jones ; large nickel-plated stirrup-irons; one of the saddle-tree-point pockets has been repaired with two narrow strips of leather ; a double-rein bridle with large snaffle-ring: value, £3.

Kurow. —James Cree, farmer, reports stolen, on the 13th or 14th July last, two sets of leading-chains, one set galvanised ; a partly worn bridle and breastplate, large ring, plated snaffle-bit; two partly worn horse-covers, a balfsnaffie brand on each of them in black paint, B.M. on one of them : value, £5 10s.

Oamaru. —Patience Norris, Thames Street, reports stolen from a clothes-line, between the 17th and 18th ultimo, a medium-sized white honeycombed bed-quilt with fringe round the edge; value, 9s.

Dunedin.— George Lake, watchmaker, reports stolen from outside the Alhambra Theatre, on the 20th ultimo, a nearly new Red Bird bicycle, No. 44891, red tires and frame, wooden rims, racing-handles painted brown, Brook’s racingsaddle, old King of the Road lamp attached; value, £lB 7s. 6d.

Suspicion attached to William Wilkinson, a miner and rabbiter, about twenty-one years of age, 5 ft. 2 in. high, medium build, dark hair and complexion, small dark moustache only.
