Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Devonport (Auckland). —Anthony Mallinson, gardener, reports that, on the 29th or 30th ultimo, his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : A brown-leather homemade purse, with a piece of string attached as a fastening, containing two £1 notes, a sovereign, two half-sovereigns, and 14s. in silver. Suspicion attached to Robert Connor, a native of Ireland, a gardener, forty-eight years of age, 5 ft. 9 in. high, grey eyes, stout build, brown hair whiskers and moustache turning grey ; was wearing a black sac coat, a skull-cap, tweed vest, and brown tweed trousers.

Napier. —Donald McLennan, labourer, reports stolen from his bedroom in Neil’s boardinghouse, on the 9th ultimo, a very large size dark-brown tweed overcoat with cape, brown lining; value, £2. Suspicion attached to Robert Clarke, about thirty years of age, 5 ft. 10 in. or 11 in. high, stout build, fresh complexion, brown hair, sandy moustache only, military appearance ; dressed in dark sac suit, and black soft-felt hat. Supposed gone towards Inland Patea.

Herbertville. —Keita Ropihia, Porangahau, reports stolen from her dwelling, between May and August last, a ladies’ gold open-faced watch, glass and hands broken, “Keita Ropihia, Wellington Exhibition, 1897,” engraved on inside of case ; value, £BBs.

Palmerston North. —Rev. Herbert F. Hunt reports stolen from his dwelling in Palmerston North, between the 11th and 13bh April last, a ladies’ old-fashioned gold bracelet with knob at each end, one missing; a gold chain bracelet with large links, snake’s head on each end, set

with turquoises; and an old-fashioned gold brooch with bar across the centre, set with five turquoises: total value, £B.

Otaki. —Joseph William Holdoroft reports stolen from his hotel, between the 15th ultimo and Ist instant, a doublebarrelled breech-loading gun, maker Bland or Holster, pistol handle, twelve bore ; value, £l2.

Wellington. —Joseph Henry Hoffman, carpenter, reports stolen from his bedroom in the Brunswick Restaurant, at 12.45 a.m. on the 14th July last, £1 19s. in silver; a doublecased silver English lever watch, much worn, a small piece broken off the dial near the second hand, maker Blondall, Liverpool; attached were three keys on a white-metal chain, with | in. links, and small oval links between : total value, £6 2s. 6d. A man, name unknown, was seen in the bedroom, and ran away. Description: About 5 ft. 7 in. high, fair complexion, brown hair, clean-shaved, about twenty-five years of age ; passes himself off as an actor; dressed in darktweed shabby suit, blue shirt, high collar, and Dr. Jim hat.

Wellington. —Charles William Martin, Roxburgh Street, reports that on the 2nd instant his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen: A 15-carat cable-pattern bangle with padlock fastening, a large heart-shaped greenstone pendant mounted in gold attacned; a small 15-carat cablepattern bangle, a small round shirt-stud engraved on face, a sovereign, a half-sovereign, and 10s. 6d. in silver: total value, £6 os. 6d.

Wellington. —James Thomas Gunn, clerk, Nairn Street, reports stolen from his bedroom, between the 19th and 21st ultimo, a brown-leather purse, with leather band, containing 14s. in silver, three dinner-tickets, and a tram-ticket.

Christchurch. —Edward Coltman, labourer, reports stolen from him, on the 25th or 26th ultimo, a gentlemen’s silver lever watch, No. 17758, £3 in notes, and 16s. in silver.

Amberley. —William Robertson, labourer, reports stolen from the bed in his whare, between the 15th and 22nd ultimo, five £1 notes, numbers unknown.
