(See Police Gazette, 1897, page 89.) Auckland. —E. Warwick, charged with the theft of money, the property of Robert Snell Land, was arrested on the 26th ultimo, and committed for trial.

Waitekauri. — William Jones is charged on warrant with false pretences on Alfred William Thiessen about the 30th January last. Description : A native of Wales, an engineer, about thirty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 6 in. high, slight build, dark complexion, clean-shaved except dark moustache, dark hair, has impediment in speech; when last seen was wearing a light-tweed suit, a light-coloured soft felt hat, and a brown mackintosh. Offender obtained £6 18s. by falsely representing to complainant that he was a Mason, and would pay above amount into the lodge as initiation-fee.

Woodville. —Annie Stewart, about thirteen years of age, reports that on the 20th ultimo a man, name unknown, committed rape on her on the Pinfold Road. Offender is supposed about nineteen years of age, medium height, long thin hairless face, dressed in dark trousers, grey coat and vest, grey hat said to have no band on. The oomplainant and her sister, eleven years old, passed the offender on the road; he returned and caught the complainant, dragged her to the side, and committed the offenoe. It was dark, and identification is doubtful.

Masterton.— George H. Goodall, cycle engineer, reports that on the 31st ultimo a man, name unknown, hired a bicycle from him, and is now supposed to have sold it. Description: About nineteen years of age, about 5 ft. 6 in. high, medium build, fair oomplexion, jockey appearance, dressed in dark coat, light-coloured trousers, and grey slouched hat. The bicycle is a gentlemen’s Rambler, “ Ko. 42783 ” on the tube under the saddle, black enamelled 24 m. frame, steel rims, drooped handles, the back stay near the hub appears to have been repaired; value, £ls.

Carterton. —James Michael Neary, for default of paying £lO 6s. fine and costs for wilful damage to property, has been arrested by Constables De Norville and Gleeson, Palmerston North and Bull’s police, and lodged in the Terrace Prison, Wellington.

Greytown.— David Dick is charged on warrant with failing to appear at the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court on the 4th instant to answer charges of obtaining liquor when a prohibited person. Description: Irish, sixty one years of age, 5 ft. 4 in. high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, grey hair, and a large nose (see Police Gazette, 1900, page 28). He left Greytown on the 25th ultimo, and had about £2O with him ; supposed left the district for the purpose of spending it in drink.

Wellington.— John Henry Dunn is charged on warrant with the theft, on the 27th March, 1900, of £6 7s. 6d., the money of Maude Clinch. Offender is a native of New Zealand, a labourer, about twenty-seven years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, stout build, fresh complexion, brown hair, clean-shaved except dark moustache, grey eyes, gunshot wound in left leg below the knee ; supposed to have gone North by the s.s. “Te Anau ” on the 27th ultimo. He obtained the above amount to furnish a house and marry complainant, but cleared away with the money.

Wellington. —Thomas Andrew Conn, charged with theft of money from the Bank of New Zealand : It is said offender has gone to South Africa, and the bank declines to incur any expense in bringing him back if found outside this colony.

(See Police Gazette, 1900, page 56.) Wellington. —Theft from James Smith Cross of watch and chain: Henry Preston has been arrested for this offence by Detective Robert Neill, and committed for trial. Watch only recovered.

Cheistchubch.— John Smith is charged on warrant of commitment to Lyttelton Gaol for one month in default of paying £1 155., fine and costs, for provoking a breach of the peaoe. Description: English, shoemaker and labourer, thirty-eight years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, medium build, sandy complexion, fair hair, blue eyes, reddish beard whiskers and moustache. He may be found with Henrietta Smith. (For her description see Police Gazette, 1899, page 247.)

Christchurch. — George Henry Rudd is charged on warrant with the theft, on the 20th ultimo, of 4s. 6d., the money of Walter Halliday, hotelkeeper. Description : Supposed colonial, hotel rouseabout, about twenty years of age, about sft. Sin. high, dark hair, dark complexion, medium build, clean-shaved; dressed in dark-tweed suit, black peak cap ; has a sailor appearance. He was sent by his employer, Mr. Halliday, to exchange fat for soap ; he sold the fat for the above amount, and then left, supposed for Dunedin.

Rangiora. —Henry Martin (Martin and Carmichael), cycle agent, Ashley Street, reports that on the 10th ultimo John Frederick McLean hired a bicycle from him, and now believes he has disposed of it. McLean is a native of Scotland, a cook, about thirty years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, medium build, ruddy complexion, reddish moustache only ; was cooking last year at Glentui Station, and afterwards at the Harewood Arms Hotel, East Oxford. The bicycle is a gentlemen’s Star, No. 3007, enamel much worn off, 24 in. or 26 in. frame, Coventry roller chain, flat reversible handlebars, and rat-trap pedals; value, £l2.

Methven. Michael Shea is charged on warrant of commitment to the Lyttelton Gaol for seven days in default of paying £1 135., fine and costs, for disturbing a congregation. Description: Irish, labourer, thirty-six years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. high, sallow complexion, black hair, light-blue eyes, left arm off at elbow. (See Police Gazette, 1899, page 48.)
