Auckland. —John Russell Gray, clerk, reports stolen from his yacht “Kotiri,” on the 30th or 31st ultimo, a new Primo camera, 7£in. by 6Jin. by 4Jin., covered with black-grained leather, had three slides, made by the Rochester Optical Company, U.S.A.; a chooolate-coloured case for same, bound with leather; a small nickel clock, yellow dial, 2Jin. diameter; and a brass champion six-lever circular padlockj; value, in all, £2 10s,
Auckland. —Charles Newson, builder, reports stolen from Port Street, between the 25th and 27th ultimo, a nearly new spade, a steel octagon crowbar, 5 ft. 6 in. long, chisel- and flat-pointed at ends; and a new pick, part of handle sawn off ; value, 14s. 3d.
(See Police Gazette , 1900, page 15.) “ Stella,” s.s., Auckland. —Theft from Robert Robertson’s bunk : James Docherty has been arrested by Detective W. A. Bailey and Constable J. P. Miller, and committed for this and another offence. Trousers only recovered.
Cambridge. —George Empson, Postmaster, reports stolen from an outhouse, on the 2nd or 3rd instant, a boys’ saddle, small size, one of the flaps giving way near seat and much worn, odd stirrup-irons, one stirrup-leather almost new; value £1 55.: and an old bridle with coloured foreheadpiece, reins knotted at ends and one riveted to bit; value 2s. 6d. Suspicion attached to William Andrew Clarke, alias Powdrill , a native of Auckland, a labourer, about twentythree years of age, 5 ft. 5£ in. high, medium build, fresh complexion, blue eyes, dark-brown hair, sandy reddish moustache ; dressed in a blue-serge suit and straw hat. (See Police Gazette, 1898, page 166.) He was seen about Cambridge, and disappeared shortly after the theft.
Thames. —The Thames Harbour Board report that on the 28th ultimo their magazine was broken into, and the following stolen : Seventeen cases of Kynock’s gelignite, inferior quality; and three cases of Nobel’s dynamite: value, £SO. Identification doubtful.
Devonport (Auckland.) —Mrs. Venetia McDonald, White Street, Auckland, reports stolen from the Takapuna Racecourse, on the 31st ultimo, a heavy-woven woollen rug, white colour, with black and yellow stripes, value, £1 10s.; and a Maori keikei kit, yellow colour, with black stripes ; value, ss.
(See Police Gazette, 1900, page 24.) Devonport (Auckland). —Leonard Waters’ boat has been recovered. Not stolen. (See Police Gazette, 1900, page 3.) Hamilton. —Theft of Joseph N. Read’s bicycle: James Carr has been arrested by Constable E. T. Howell, Huntly police, for this offence. Bicycle recovered.
Ashurst. —Joseph Hollis, labourer, reports lost or stolen in a paddock, on the 15th instant, a gentlemen’s English silver lever hunting-watch, much worn, maker’s name and number unknown, may have “ 12 ” on a small piece of paper mside ; and a brass chain ; value, £3 10s.
Wellington. Thomas Mason Wilford, Esq., M.H.R. reports stolen from the passage of the Central Club, on the 23rd or 24th ultimo, a gentlemen’s Raleigh bicycle, No. 4786 on left-hand side of seat-lug, nearly new, 26 in. frame, Westwood rims, Dunlop tires, Brooks B. 10 saddle, fitted with handle-bar, brake, step, and bag of tools; has fancy-framed rubber pedals, 4 in. wide : value, £2l.
Picton. Mrs. Johanna Climo, Manaroa, reports stolen from a railway-carriage, at Picton, or between there and Mount Pleasant Station, on the 3rd instant, a large brownpaper parcel, containing a blue-serge dress, a crepon dress, a black lustre, a crepon blouse, a black-fringed lustre-blouse, sundry small articles of women’s clothing, and a gold brooch in the design of two hearts connected by a bar, made out of a pair of earrings ; value in all, £7.
Christchurch. —John Butler, labourer, reports stolen in Kingsley Street, Sydenham, on the 4th ultimo, a gentlemen’s Waverley bicycle, No. 114,282, nearly new, lamp and bell attached; value, £2O.
Christchurch. —George Collier, house-agent, 60, Lichfield Street, reports stolen from the back of his house, on the 29th or 30th December last, a copper tea and-coffee urn, two compartments, capacity two gallons ; value, £2.
“ MoKOIA,” s.s.—Dr. Henry Robert Smith reports stolen from his cabin while the steamer was at the Bluff, on the 30th ultimo, a ladies’ plain black-leather handbag, 18 in. by 22 in., containing four cut-glass bottles, medium size, silver tops with A.M.S. thereon; a ladies’ gold ring with two diamonds and three pearls in claw setting; two ladies’ plain gold single diamond rings, a gold broooh representing a fly, set with diamonds and turquoises ; a gold brooch, anchor shape, medium size; a small plate-glass hand-mirror with silver back, a silver puff-box, a silver snuff-box, an ivory glove-stretcher, an ivory paper-knife, an aluminium pincushion in the shape of a duok; and two pieces of Maltese
lace; value £IOO. Stewards suspected, several thefts having taken place on board the vessel. Complainant’s address is : Care of Barry Smith, Rakaia, Canterbury.
Dunedin. —William Cooksley, hotelkeeper, reports stolen from outside an office in Rattray Street, on the Ist instant, a gentlemen’s bicycle, maker Kent, black-enamelled stillite hubs on each wheel; value, £ls. No further description given.
Invercargill. —Robert McNab, Esq., M.H.R., reports stolen from the railway-station, on the 12th or 13th ultimo, a gentlemen’s Massey-Harris bicycle, model 3, No. 11807 underneath bottom bracket, 24in. frame, adjustable handlebars, Christy saddle, bell has the name “ Corbin ” on it, wooden mud-guards, two small pieces of rubber on each pedal, break attached, one of the hubs on front wheel repaired with a piece of steel, and has four spokes laced into it; value £2O.
