Horse- and Cattle-stealing.

Tolago Bay. —Stealing John Bentham Morris’s gelding : A warrant has been issued by the Hastings Bench for the arrest of Andrew Neilson, the suspect, he having disposed of the animal at Hastings, and it is now in possession of the police there. Offender is identical with Arthur Neilson, discharged from Napier Gaol on the 22nd ultimo, and was seen at the Spit two days afterwards in company with Kristian, alias George, Dennison, who was also recently discharged from the same gaol, and being countrymen they are probably still together. For Neilson’s description, see “Prisoners discharged,” in this Gazette. He was dressed in a dark coat and vest, brownish-grey saddle-tweed trousers, and black or dark-brown slouch hat. His swag was apparently done up in a large-sized flour-bag or canvas bag, tied with rope. For Dennison’s description, see Police Gazette ■, 1899, page 69.

Pungarehu. —Marcus J. Macßeynolds, storekeeper, reports stolen, between the 24th May last and 23rd ultimo, a stout-build harness cob-horse, roan colour, black points, aged, irregular mane, bang tail, branded R.0.P., on near rump, it is thought; value, £lO.

New' Plymouth. — Alfred Harry, charged with the theft of Edward Janies Reardon’s horse, and of E. H. Jones’s saddle and bridle : Offender and his mate, Wood, are said to have shipped as firemen on the s.s. “ Waiwera ” for London, Harry under the name of Jones, and Wood under the name of Campbell. They are also suspected of breaking into and stealing from the shop of Arthur James Tarrant, at Lyttelton. (See Police Gazette, 1899, page 91.)

Waimate. —Wait and Burbury, sheep-farmers, Clarksfield, report stolen from a paddock, between the 20th March and 20th Juue, 1899, thirty crossbred ewes, mixed ages, branded @ in black on near ribs, marked on left ears with two forebits and a back-bit; value, £ls.
