/ (See Police Gazette, 1898, page 129.) Auckland. —William Henry Cole, charged with the theft of £286 11s. Id., -jooeyof his partner, Sydney William Talbot Herbert, 1 as been arrested by the Sydney police, and remanded to Auckland. (98/1298.)

Thames. —Thomas Day (may assume the name of Thomas D. King) is charged on warrant with the theft, on the 9th April, 1897, of a cheque for £lO 55., drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Thames, the property of John William Poulgrain, William Eddowes, and Arthur C. Rae, as trustees of the Court Pride of Parnell Lodge of Foresters. Offender, who was secretary to the lodge, is described as colonial, about twenty-Beven years of age, about 5 ft. 6 in. high, slim build, fresh complexion, dark hair and moustache only, lower front teeth blackened by smoking, small fine hands ; carried a silver chain with long twisted links, ar d large silver hunting-watch without glass; a school-teacher; frequents hotels, and is fond of discussion. Supposed to have left Auckland on the 11th July last by the s.s. “ Elingamite ” for Sydney, probably en route to Western Australia, and will be well known to mos, of the Thames miners now there. Was accompanied by a youth named Bert Rickitt, eighteen years of age, short and stout, fresh complexion, dark hair, none on face ; carried a silver curb-chain. Offender is said to have a relative named King in the Customs Department, Sydney, and is known to Mr. John Agnew, manager of the Sons of Gualia Mine, Mount Leonora, about 250 miles from

Coolgardie. Arrest desirable, as there are several other charges pending, and his defalcations amount to about' 1 £IOO. A later report states that offender has been seen in Oxford Street, Sydney, dressed rather shabbily, wearing blue or black goggles, and letting his beard grow.

Gisbobne. —William Penny Forman is charged on warrant with having, at Nuhaka, on the 18th and 21st ultimo, , committed buggery on Bernard Mollroy. Description: J Scotch, about fifty-four years of age, 5 ft. 9 in. or 10 in. high, medium build, dark complexion, bald head, long black "beard turning grey, dark eyes ; supposed dressed in blue dungaree trousers, dark-woollen shirt, and dark-woollen Tam-o’-shanter cap. He is supposed to be identical with William Forman, convicted of embezzlement and uttering a forgery at Wellington. (See Police Gazette, 1883, page 96; and 1885, page 135.)

Wellington.— John Ryan, charged with failing to pay a fine and costs for illegally betting, has been arrested by Detective Bishop, Palmerston North police, and sent to Wellington Gaol.

Wellington. —William Mclntyre, charged on warrant in default of paying a fine and costs for assault, has been arrested by Constable G. Pearce, and sent to the Terrace Gaol.

Chbistchurch. —Edward Ward (name supposed fictitious) is charged on warrant with having, on the 10th instant, forged and uttered to Frederick Davis, furniture-dealer, 81, Colombo Street, a cheque for £4 10s. Offender is supposed English, between thirty-five and forty years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. or 9 in. high, has the appearance of a labourer, stoutish build, full face, dark hair turning grey, shaved except stubby moustache ; dressed in a dark-blue serge sacsuit and dark-felt hat. The cheque is drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Christchurch, and purports to be signed by W. B. Wright, but has been returned marked “ No account,” and is a forgery.

Chbistchubch.— On the 30th ultimo a man, name unknown, uttered a forged cheque for £5 to Samuel Clarke, jeweller, 148, Colombo Street. Offender is between thirty-five and forty years of age, about 5 ft. 6 in. high, dark complexion, medium build, clean shaved except thick stubby dark moustache, clipped at ends; dressed in dark sac-suit and soft dark-felt bat. The cheque is drawn on the Union Bank of Australia in favour of J. Peterson, and purports to be signed bv C. W. Turner, but has been declared a forgery. No warrant.

Mackenzie, Queenstown police, for this and other offences, and remanded to Invercargill. See next notice, also “ Housebreaking,” &c. (Winton). (See Police Gazette, 1898, page 153.) Invercargill. —Thomas McDonald, charged with having forged and uttered a cheque to James Aitken, has been arrested by Sergeant J. G. Nelson, charged with false pretences on James Aitken : It has been ascertained that accused was lost overboard from the schooner “ Sir Henry ” on the voyage from Kaipara to Dunedin. Warrant cancelled.
