Auckland. —Richard Edward Vince is charged with disobeying the terms of his release under the First Offenders’ Probation Ast, Description’ //A native of Napier, New Zealand, a wood-hawker, sixteen years of age, 5 ft. 4f in. high, slight builff/fair coiriplexion, light-brown hair, grey eyes, tattoo dot on left cheek, heart (faint) on right forearm, and half-star on left forearm. Description : clerk, thm\Mwije years of age, 5 ft. 5£ in. high, dark hail hp-jl-complexlon/ brown eyes, straight nose, Indian-ink marks onf second apd thumb, scar down nose ; was dressed J in a dara ’coat and vest, light-tweed trousers, hard black-felt hat, light fhoes ; sometimes wears a brown Chesterfield coat, and Carries a brown-leather bag ; very

Offender gave complainant a cheque for £3, drawn by himself on the Bank of New South Wales in payment of an account, and received £2 4s. 6d. in change. It has been ascertained that he has no account at the bank.

Paekoa. —John Madeley is charged on warrant with false pretences on Thomas Nepean Edward Kenny, Clerk, Ohine-/ muri County Council, on the 27th July, 1898. Description ( 4 Supposed colonial, a labourer, thirty years of age, 5 ft. 4 in. high, very dark complexion, shared except dark moustache, medium build, dark hair; fond of drink; dressed in a blueserge or blue-cloth sac-suit, and hard black-felt hat. He obtained the sum of £1 Bs. by means of an order purporting to be signed by Horace Marguet, but which has been declared a forgery. Offender signed the receipt “ William Black,” and is supposed to have gone to Auckland or Thames.

Pungarehu.—Thomas Norris is charged on warrant with false pretences on John Buckthought, hotelkeeper, Rahotu, on the 27th April, 1898. Description : Colonial, twenty-four years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, well made, fair complexion, hazel eyes, straight nose, full round face, shaved except small moustache and sideboards, beard (if grown) will be sandy; fond of drink. Offender obtained from complainant the sum of £2 155., and board and lodging to the value of 55., for which he gave his cheque on a bank at Hawera, but it has been ascertained that he has no account there. He has been several times in the Auckland District.

Mackey, Takaka police. Remanded to Palmerston North, and committed for trial. (See Police Gazette, 1898, page 137.) S Wellington.—Frederick Bailey Muir, charged with falsa pretences on W. F. Shortt, has been arrested by Constable A. Morgan, Kaikoura police. Remanded to Wellington and discharged.

Wellington.—C. Anderson (name probably fictitious) is charged on warrant with the theft, on the 4tb instant, of a bicycle, value £l2, the property of A. B. Pownall, dealer, Willis Offender is supposed colonial, about twentythree years of age, 5 ft. 5 in. high, stout build, dark hair and complexion, shaved except moustache ; dressed in a blue-serge suit, and hard black-felt hat. He hired the bicycle, and sold it on the above date for £5.

/ (See Police Gazette , 1898, pages 2 and 88.) Masterton. —William Gifford, alias Williamson, charged with the theft of August Brown’s cheque, has been arrested at Wellington by Constable C. R. Broberg, on information supplied by the Westport police. Committed for trial at the District Court, Masterton.

Christchurch. —William Coombs is charged on warrant of commitment to Lyttelton Prison for fourteen days in default of paying £3 17s. fine and costs for wilful damage to property. Description : A native of New Zealand, a baker or labourer, twenty-two years of age, about 5 ft. 4 in. high, medium build, fair complexion, dark-brown liaii*, clean-shaved. Offender is supposed to have shipped under an assumed name as fireman on the s.s. “ lonic” for London.

(See Police Gazette , 1898, page 89.) Christchurch. —H., alias John, O’Hagan, charged on warrant with false pretences on George Q.ueree, has been arrested by Detective L. D. Benjamin, Napier police, and remanded to Christchurch.

Port Chalmers. —A man, name unknown, is charged with indecently exposing himself to Yida B. Johnson, on Sawyer’s Bay Hoad, on the 23rd ultimo. Description : About 5 ft. 8 in. high, slender build ; wore black mackintosh with cape, Identification doubtful. No warrant.

Invercargill.—R. Nelson (may be known as Gus. Nilson) is charged on warrant with false pretences on James Aitken, hotelkeeper, on the 20th June, 1898. Description: A native of Sye<Mi, kseaman, thirty-five years of age, about sft. 11 in. .'Vigj/yWxdmm build, fair complexion, light-brown hair, fair mojustacme only, blue eyes, looks sideways when conversing; usjurny dresses in a blue-serge suit, kerchief round neck tied in a bow* in front. Offender obtained £5 from complainant by falsely representing that he was recently discharged from the barque “ Annie Hill,” and that there was £45 owing to him on account of wages. He was boarding at the Royal Hotel, Lyttelton, on the 12th ultimo, and was previously employed on the s.s. “ Taupo.”

Winton. —On the 16th instant a man, name unknown, 7 jittered a forged cheque for £6 10s. to Thomas McMillan, storekeeper. Offender is supposed colonial, twenty to twenty-two years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, dark hair and complexion, no hair on face ; wore dark clothes and soft black-felt hat. The cheque is drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Winton Branch, in favour of James Johnston or bearer, and purports to be signed by Lawrence Forde, farmer, of Heddon Bush, but has been declared a forgery. No warrant.
