Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.
Auckland. Thomas Whyte, alias Thomas Whyte MrfjflAan, alias John Walker, is charged on warrant with himfrg, on the 26th ultimo, broken into the shop of Andrew i Carke CaugWSy, Queen Street, and stolen therefrom eiatftf spirts, a rug, two pairs of gloves, two umbrellas, fourffiaclyies, and eleven pairs of socks, value £5 10s. Since JpEovexai. Offender is Scotch, a cook, twenty-two years of fage, 5 ft. 8£ in. high, fresh complexion, brown curly hair, blue eyes, shaved except small dark moustache, scar on nose, dots tattooed botween each thumb and forefinger, anchor and cross on left hand, ring on second left finger, scar on right arm ; dressed in a rough dark-serge suit. Photographed at Lyttelton Gaol, 9th September, 1896. (See Police Gazette, 1897, page 18.) He was seen making his escape off the premises, and the stolen articles were found in the yard of the United Service Hotel, where he was employed as nightporter.
Auckland. —John Swinbauks, miner, reports that on the 12th ultimo, in Wellesley Street West, he was assaulted by three youths, who robbed him of a £lO note, an English silver lever open-faced watch, makers Whitaker and Lang, Maxborough, No. (supposed) 85852, value £8 ; and a silver curb-chain, value 17s. 6d. Complainant, who resides at Hikurangi, was under the influence of liquor, and can give no description of his assailants.
J Coromandel. —John Kessell, miner, reports stolen from his tent, on the 12th ultimo, a silver Rotherham huntingwatch, No. 16556, “ Monkaster ” on dial, hour-hand slightly
Waipawa. —George Thompson, Hampden, reports stolen from his tent, on the 7th ultimo, a silver hunting-watch, No. 32670, “ G. Cowper, Waipukurau,” scratched on inside of case; value, £5. Suspicion attached to a boy named John Lindsay, living near complainant’s.
Blenheim. —Harry Satherley is charged with having, on the 9th ultimo, stolen from the person of Matthew Beattie, shepherd, two £lO, two £5, and seven £1 notes, all on the National Bank. Description: English, forty-two years of age, 5 ft. 11 in. high, stout build, grey hair (nearly white), fresh complexion, shaved except grey stubbly moustache, full face, small blue eyes, slightly deaf; dressed in a dark sac coat and vest, light-grey saddle-tweed trousers, and small tweed cap; well known to racing-men all over the colony as a Marlborough horse-trainer. The offence was committed in the Criterion Hotel, Blenheim, complainant being under the influence of liquor., Accused subsequently became intoxicated; and appears to have dropped two of the notes (one £lO, and one £5), which were found in a paddock. He left the hotel about 10 p.m. on the day of the theft, was seen next morning, and then disappeared*. He will no doubt seek employment at stables. Warrant issued by the Wellington Bench.
Westport. —Stolen from bedrooms in Hennessy’s Hotel, Fairdown, on the 7th ultimo, a pair of blue-serge trousers, a pair of cotton drawers, a pair of woollen socks, a set of gold-mounted studs, and a white-silk handkerchief, value £2, the property of Thomas Martin ; and a blue-black tweed sac coat and vest, small square pattern, and a blue-and-black-striped scarf, value £3 155., the property of Charles Perkins. Suspicion attached to John Lawson, supposed colonial, a groom or labourer, about twenty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 6in. high, medium build, fair complexion, clean-shaved, stammers slightly. Suspect was staying in the hotel, and left on the above-mentioned date per s.s. “Wainui” for Wellington. He is said to be well known at Barrett’s Hotel there.
Christchurch. Margaret Scarlett, Windmill Road, Sydenham, reports stolen from her dwelling, between the 21st and 24th ultimo, a gentlemen’s long brown overcoat with brown-velvet collar, lined with Scotch plaid ; and a new grey-tweed skirt: value, £3 each.
