Inspectors of Weights and Measures, Counties of Butler, Maniototo, Hawke's Bag, Patangata, and Wairoa, and Boroughs of Westport , Naseby, Napier, and Hastings, appointed. Colonial Secretary’s Office, Wellington, lfitli August, 1897. HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to appoint the following persons to be Inspectors of Weights and Measures, under “ The Weights and Measures Act, 1868,” and the Acts amending the same, for the districts set respectively opposite their names, viz.: —
Name. District. Sergeant Henry Green .. County of Buffer and Borough of Westport. Constable Robert William County of Maniototo and Lemm Borough of Naseby. Sergeant Alfred James Counties of Hawke’s Bay, PaMitchell tangata, and Wairoa, and Boroughs of Napier and Hastings.

Constable Josiah Gilbert Mackey
to be Clerk of the Magistrate’s and Warden’s Courts at Takaka from the 31st July, 1897, vice Constable J. Jeffries. T. THOMPSON.
Inspector of Factories appointed. Department of Labour, Wellington, 16th August, 1897. HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to appoint the under-mentioned person to be an Inspector of Factories under “ The Factories Act, 1894,” and to assign to him the district set opposite his name, viz.:— Name. District. Constable Robert William ] Mid „ dl ® Isla “ d , of Colony 1 ot New Zealand, and the ( islands adjacent thereto. WM. HALL-JONES, Acting Minister of Labour.
Award of the Royal Humane Society of Australasia granted in New Zealand. 1522.— Robert Oliphant, of Auckland, New Zealand, a constable, aged twenty-six years, who rescued Margaret Pernell, of Bishop Cowie’s Home, Parnell, Auckland, aged eighteen years, a domestic, from drowning at Waitemata Harbour, Auckland, on the 29th May, 1896. Margaret Pernell jumped into the harbour; Oliphant jumped in after her, and, after very great difficulty, owing to the strong ebbtide and the woman struggling, he succeeded in rescuing her. Silver medal.
