Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland.— Frederick Lock, billiard-marker, Waverley Hotel, reports stolen from his room, on the 6th instant, an English silver lever hunting-watch, maker and number unknown, “ Fred. Lock, Vermont Street, Ponsonby, Auckland,” engraved on case ; value, £2 10s.

Auckland. —Joseph Gilmore, agent, Mount Roskill Road, reports stolen from him in Auckland, during the night of the 13th instant, a gentlemen’s gold lever hunting stop-watch, No. 218, maker’s name unknown, value £3O; and a fine goldplated chain, value 10s.

Te Aroha. —James J. Roberts, butchers’ assistant, reports stolen from his bedroom, between the 26th ultimo and 2nd instant, an improved silver Geneva open-faced watch, No. 7574 and 780, dent on edge of case, hinge broken ; value, £1 15s. Suspicion attached to Ernest Baker, who is in the employ of complainant’s brother. Description: About seventeen years of age, about 5 ft. high, brown eyes, broad face, brown hair, hard expression.

Auckland. —Joseph Winter, licensee, Junction Hotel, Epsom, reports that during the night of the 19th instant his premises were broken into, and the following stolen : A ladies’ gold Geneva open-faced watch, No. 67337, maker’s name unknown, value £5 10s.; and a gold chain, very small links, doubled three or four times, value £2 10s. Suspicion attached to a man named Tony, supposed colonial, thirtysix years of age, about 5 ft. 3 in. high, stout build, fair complexion, reddish sideboards and moustache. Supposed to be in Auckland.

Onehunga. —John Hollis, labourer, reports stolen from a hut at Sutherland’s Tannery, on the 9th instant, a silver open-faced watch (supposed a lever), maker’s name and num-

ber unknown, “.Phelps ” or “ Fells ” engraved on the inside of back case ; a metal chain with five-franc gold piece on end ; and £1 Is. 6d. in cash : total value, £3 Is. 6d. Suspicion attached to a man named Harrison, who stayed in the hut, and left during complainant’s absence. Description : About twenty-eight years of age, about sft. 9in. high, medium build, shaved except sandy moustache, long features ; wore a black frock-coat, brown-tweed vest, serge trousers, and small skull-cap. He is supposed to have gone to Auckland.

Napier. —Robert Connop, jockey, Hastings, reports stolen from the Provincial Hotel, Napier, on the 14th or 15th instant, an overcoat with cape attached, no sleeves, small grey-check pattern ; value, £2 18s.

Makuri. —Louis McAllister reports that on the 17th instant his dwelling was burglariously entered, and the following stolen : A dark-tweed sac-coat, having a small cut on right-hand side in front of bottom pocket, value £1 10s.; a pair of grey saddle-tweed trousers, size 5, with raised seam ; and the title-deeds of a three-quarter-acre section, No. 149, Oamaru.

Wellington. —James Keir, painter, Hay Street, Oriental Bay, reports that on the Bth instant his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen: A gentlemen’s gold albert, snake pattern, well worn ; a ladies’ plain gold ring, well worn, with (supposed) initials “ A.L. to N.K. and a ladies’ gold engagement ring set with five diamonds (one large, and two smaller ones at each side), in good condition : total value, £l6 11s.

Greymouth. —James Corbett reports stolen from an unoccupied dwelling at Cobden, on the 7th or Bth instant, two 561 b. bags of No. 1 sugar ; a double red blanket, black stripes at both ends which are bound with blue-woollen thread ; a half-woollen shirt with collar, dark colour; a pair of grey lambs’-wool drawers, bound, with red tape; and a pair of dark-woollen socks : value, £3 10s. 6d. Suspicion attached to James Bourke, a native of the colony, twenty-seven years of age, 6 ft. lin. high, medium build, sandy complexion hair and small moustache. He is a miner, working at Ten Mile, near Barrytown.

Christchurch. —William Robinson, bootmaker, High Street, reports stolen from a dwelling at New Brighton, between the 4th and 11th instant, a telescope, about 18 in. long, with a piece of morocco leather, about on large end ; a trout-rod, rosewood colour, in several pieces, brass at thick end unscrews; some cups and saucers; and a tin kettle recently soldered at pipe : value, £3.

Dunedin. —John Willis, milk-boy, reports stolen from his hut, at North-east Harbour, on the 27th ultimo, a Potosi silver Geneva watch, and a silver albert chain of same material, curb pattern, with threepenny-piece attached; value, 13s. Suspicion attached to William Tubby, at present in the employ of Mr. Shaw, farmer, Otago Peninsula. (For description, see Police Gazette, 1896, page 28; and 1897, page 96.)

Queenstown. —John Murphy, miner, Stoney Creek, reports stolen from his dwelling, between the 28th March last and 13th instant, a new grey-woollen shirt; a new white-and-black-striped cotton shirt with collar; a zinc gold-washing dish, ordinary size, with hole on each side ; a miners’ pike, and an axe, half size: value, £1 7s. 6d. Suspicion attached to Patrick O’Shea, Irish, about sixty years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. high, stout build, fair complexion, fair hair beard whiskers and moustache, blue eyes; dressed in an old greyish coat, old dark trousers, and hard black-felt hat. He is still in the Queenstown District.

Cromwell. —John Werner, minewiLowburn, reports stolen from his dwelling, and 17th March last, a pair of red new, marked W in centre and J.W.'unde)|/lT&jream(f,at inns ; value £1 ss. Suspicion attached to John Liddle, alias Keeling, alias Hobart Town Jack, now in Dunedin Gaol awaiting trial on another charge. (For description, see Police Gazette, 1893, page 51.)

Winton. —Thomas Gerrard, farmer, South Hillend, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 16th instant, an old broken silver lever watch; value, £1 4s. Suspicion is attached to Patrick McDermott, about eighteen years of age, about sft. 7in. high, sallow complexion, thick lips, large eyes; dress not known. He is supposed to have gone to Birchwood, near Otautau.

Winton. —Joseph Langford, farmer, South Hillend, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 16th instant, eleven sticks of Juno tobacco, and five white-metal teaspoons ; value, 16s. Suspicion attached to Patrick McDermott, referred to in the preceding notice.
