Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.
Auckland. —A man, name unknown, is charged on warrant with having, on the 19th or 20th ultimo, broken into a shed in the grounds of the Government House, and stolen therefrom a quantity of carpenters’ tools, value £1 55., the property of John Dick and others. Offender is eighteen or nineteen years of age, sft. 4in. or sin. high, medium build, fresh complexion, full face; wore a dirty dark-brown suit (coat cut square), and black skull-cap. Most of the articles were disposed of to second-hand dealers.
Auckland. —John Mitchell Jefferson, ohemist, Manukau Road, reports that on the 30th or 31st ultimo his shop was broken into, and £lB Is. lOd. in notes and coin stolen.
Otahuhu.— Samuel Morrison, blacksmith, reports stolen from his workshop, between the 22nd and 29th ultimo, a brace, four bits (two £in., one fin., and one and a dark-brown tweed overcoat with cape, nearly new, slightly torn and darned at back ; value in all, £2 11s. 6d.
Paeroa. —Edward Finlay, coach-proprietor, reports stolen from his whare, on the 2nd or 3rd instant, a silver hunting-watch, maker and number unknown. “JS. Finlay ” scratched inside case ; value,"£6 IDs. Suspicion attached Benjamin William Berryman, who was until recently in J complainant’s employ. Description: A stable-boy, seventeen years of age, about sft. sin. high, slight build, dark complexion, dark hair and eyes, usually wears dark clothes, and white straw hat. He is supposed to have gone to Auckland, via Thames.
Paeroa. Charles Harwood, coach - proprietor, reports stolen from his stable, on the 2nd instant, a silver lever hunting-watch, makers Rotherham and Sons, No. 83010 ; value, £6 10s. Suspicion attached to Benjamin William Berryman, referred to in the preceding notice.
New Plymouth. —Cornelius O’Sullivan, labourer, reports stolen or missing from his clothing, while in transit from Ureti to New Plymouth, on the 11th ultimo, a silver lever hunting-watch. No. 11969, maker Rotherham, London ; and a silver albert chain, bar missing: value, £9.
Eltham. —Stolen from underneath the foundation-stone of the All Saints’ Anglican Church, between the 30th ultimo and the Ist instant, a number of Jubilee coins, ranging from a farthing to a sovereign ; value, in all, £2 Is. 4fd.
Patea. —Stolen from the wharf-shed, on the 7th or Bth instant, a 301 b. box of tobacco, branded WQN ; value, £6; the property of William Quinn, storekeeper, Normanby.
Napier. —Stolen from the Volunteer encampment, on the Ist or 2nd instant, a bell-tent, much worn, marked “ Defence Department,” and branded with a broad arrow ; value, £lO. The property of the New Zealand Government.
Wellington. —A. G. Taine and Co., auctioneers, report stolen from their store, between the Ist ultimo and Ist instant, 161 b. of Galatea tobacco; value, £3 4s. Suspicion attached to Guy Peat, who was until recently in complainants’ employ. Description: Colonial, twenty-two years of age, sft. lOin. high, dark hair and complexion,clean-shaved; wears a dark sac suit, and tweed cap.
Wellington. —Austin Moss, auctioneer, Mercer Street, reports stolen from his office, on the 3rd instant, a silver watch-chain, curb pattern, thick in the middle, snip broken, having attached an Indian flint arrowhead, a dime, and a silver locket, heart shape, engraved on one side and plain on the other; value, £l.

Lincoln. —Stealing James Johnston Cleland’s harness : George Bissett, who was arrested on another charge by Constable J. Johnston, Rangiora police, has been committed for
trial for this offence. Part of the stolen property—viz., a collar, harness, and pair of blinkers—recovered. (See also “Horse- and Cattle-stealing.”)
Balclutha. —Adam Scott, Acting Railway Stationmaster, reports stolen from his office, on the sth or Gth instant, two £5 notes on the Bank of New Zealand (new), three £1 notes, and 19s. 3d. in change. Railway employes suspected.
Winton. —Richard Norden, agent for Singer’s Sewing-ma-chine Company, Invercargill, reports stolon from the hall at Brown’s, near Winton, on the 27th ultimo, a waterproof Inverness overcoat, brown-clieck pattern, brown buttons on the right side, repaired under one arm down to pocket, fastens with a dog’s head and chain, an extra hem at bottom ; value, £2.
Mosgiel. —John E. Jago, timber merchant, reports that on the 3rd or 4th instant his premises were broken into, and a cash-box, containing a glaziers’ diamond, two shillings’ worth of stamps, and six coppers stolen. Box, minus contents, since recovered. Suspicion is attached to Walter Anderson and James Northey, alias Williams. (For description, see Police Gazette, 1896, page 197, and 1897, page 9.) They are supposed to have gone to Dunedin.
