Whangarei. —James Clarke is charged on warrant of commitment to Auckland Gaol for seven days’ imprisonment and three months’ labour (concurrent) in default of paying £1 165., fine and costs, for wilful damage to property and making use of obscene language. Description : Supposed Irish, a gum-digger and navvy, about thirty-four years of age, sft. lOin. high, medium build, sallow complexion, brown hair, red whiskers beard and moustache ; dressed in a dirty patched brown-tweed sac coat, white moleskin trousers, and soft brown-felt hat; fond of drink; sings “Annie Laurie.” He was seen on the 4th instant going in the direction of Kawakawa, carrying a swag.

Auckland. —Henry Arthur, charged with illegally taking oysters : Offender is also charged, under the name of John Anderson, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Gaol for one month’s labour in default of paying £4 75., fine and costs, for illegally having oysters in his possession on the 12th June last.

Eketahuna. —Edward Olsen is charged on warrant with the theft, on the 21st instant, of a brown rug, ordinary size, black- and red-striped border, bound with braid, value 135., the property of Nels Olson. Offender is a Swede or Dane, sixty-two years of age, sft. 6in. high, stout build, brown eyes, grey beard close clipped, grey moustache, limps on right leg, loud voice ; dressed in a dark-grey tweed coat and vest, lighttweed trousers, and grey-felt slouched hat. He is well known at Palmerston North, and may have gone there, or towards Woodville and Dannevirke.

Christchurch. —Thomas Whyte, alias Thomas Whyte McLennan, alias John Walker, is charged on warrant with having assaulted Constable Millard on the 12th instant. For offender’s description see “Prisoners discharged from Lyttelton Gaol ”in this Gazette. Arrest important, as there are other charges against him.

Christchurch. —Frank Sheenan, charged with assaulting Henry E. A. Cameron, has been arrested by Constable R. Marsack, and sentenced to one month’s labour.

Timaru. —David Munro, alias Coyle, charged with having forged and uttered a cheque to David Jackson, has been arrested by Constable H. Beattie, Brunnerton police, and remanded to Timaru.

Matauha.— Henry McGuire is charged on warrant with false pretences on Charles Humphries, hotelkeeper, on the 12th ultimo. Description: Irish, a carpenter, thirty-nine years of age, sft. 4Jin. high, sallow complexion, black hair, brown eyes, dark beard whiskers and moustache, large nose ; dressed in a shabby dark-cloth suit, and hard black hat; usually a black-and-white muffler on neck. (See Police Gazette, 1896, page 114.) He obtained board and lodging to the value of £4 by falsely representing that he owned some racehorses which were to be sold in Dunedin. He is well known to the police there.

Invercargill.' —John Mackay is charged on warrant of commitment to Invercargill Gaol for twenty-four hours’ labour in default of paying a fine of £5 for being found on licensed premises during the currency of a prohibition order. Description : Scotch, a blacksmith and boilermaker, but may be employed at any labouring work, forty-nine years of age, about sft. 6in. high, medium build, pale complexion, blue eyes, dark-brown hair and moustache, turning grey ; keeps both hands deep down in his trousers-pockets when walking ; usually wears a brown-tweed suit, and soft black-felt hat turned down all round. He was employed at the Hillside Workshops some years ago, and will likely be in or about Dunedin.
