Offences not Otherwise Described.

Auckland. —Description of a man who is reported to have indecently exposed his person to two girls, names unknown, on the 18th ultimo, at the Western Park, Newton : About twenty-eight years of age, sft. 9in. high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair whiskers and moustache; dressed in a light pair of tweed trousers, black waterproof overcoat and cape, black and white straw hat, and elastic-side boots ; carried an umbrella and sketch-book. Can be identified. No warrant.

Auckland. —A man, name unknown, is charged on warrant with having, on the 25th ultimo, assaulted Thomas McGarry, fisherman, Fort Street, with intent to do him grievous bodily harm. Description: A native of Sweden, about 6ft. high, between thirty and thirty-five years of age, fair hair, clean shaved except fair moustache, medium build ; dressed in dark coat and vest, light-tweed trousers, and black hard hat.

Gisborne. George Timms, charged with having used obscene language, has been arrested by Constable Barrett Butledge, Taradale Police, and sentenced to four days’ imprisonment in the Napier Gaol.

Tauranga. —Daniel Egan, charged with forging a promissory note, and uttering the same to George Wrigley, has been arrested by Detective W. L. Chrystal, Auckland police.

Hawera. —Henry Taylor is charged on warrant of commitment to New Plymouth Gaol for fourteen days’ imprisonment, in default of paying £1 Bs., fine and costs for drunkenness. For his description, see Police Gazette, 1888, page 196. He was at one time in the Armed Constabulary Force, stationed at Opunake, and was known by the nickname of “ Pegtop Taylor.” Has recently been working as a labourer ; is fond of drink and talking of himself.

Lower Hutt. —Alexander Gillies is charged on warrant with false pretences on George Nicholas, hotelkeeper, on the 22nd ultimo. Description: Colonial, a stockman, about forty-five years of age, about sft. lOin. high, medium build, dark complexion, very dark hair, beard and whiskers and moustache tinged with grey ; dressed in a dark-tweed suit, black hard felt hat, and black waterproof coat with cape; respectable appearance. He gave complainant a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Gisborne, for £3 in payment of board, and received 9s. change, and it has since been ascertained he had no account at the bank. He went to Featherston on the 24th ultimo, and has a brother in the Wairarapa, a buyer for the Gear Company.

Wellington. —Patrick Ryan is charged on warrant of commitment to the Terrace Gaol for fourteen days, in default of paying £1 35., fine and costs for stowing away on the s.s. “ Hauroto,” from Sydney. Description : American, a seaman, twenty-three years of age, sft. s£in. high, medium build, fair complexion, light-brown hair, grey eyes, no hair on face ; naked woman, sailor, and cutlass tattooed on right forearm, and anchor on left forearm. He was allowed fourteen days to pay the fine, but has not since been heard of.

Wellington. —Harry Thompson is charged on warrant of commitment to the Terrace Gaol for fourteen days, in default of paying £1 fine, for stowing away on the s.s. “ Hauroto,” from Sydney. Description: Colonial, a seaman, twentyeight years of age, sft. 4in. high, stiff build, fresh complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, ginger moustache only; female tattooed on left forearm.

Wellington. —William Smith, charged with false pretences on Henry J. Rogers, has been arrested by Constable F. Bishop, and committed for trial.

Christchurch. —James Prince is charged on warrant with having, on the 3rd May and 15th October, 1594, embezzled the sums of £lO and £5 respectively, moneys of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, Christchurch Branch. Description : English, an engineer’s pattern-maker, forty to fortyfive years of age, about sft. 6in. high, very stout build, fair complexion, fair hair, thin straggling reddish beard whiskers and moustache, pimple on right side of chin, awkward gait. He was money steward of the society, and received the amounts in subscriptions, for which he failed to account.

Ashburton. —William Shields, charged on warrant of commitment in default of paying a fine for drunkenness, has forwarded the amount due to the Ashburton police. The warrant is now cancelled.

Dunedin. —Thomas Blue, charged on warrant of commitment in default of paying a fine and costs, has been arrested by Constable C. R. Broberg, Dunedin police.

Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. —Frank O’Dowd, licensee, Caledonian Hotel, Karangabape Road, reports that, on the night of the 29th ultimo, his premises were broken into and the following stolen : A gold keyless hunting-watch, white dial, the handle or stem by which it was wound being of glass composition, No. 1106716, gold chain with links a quarter of an inch long attached, value £3O; two cheques for £1 each, drawn on Bank of New Zealand, one signed “ M. Walsh,” payable to Frank O’Dowd; £26155. in cash ; about five hundred Manilla cigars, and two boxes of Old Judge and Prince cigarettes, value £7 ; and a pocket-book, about lOin. by Bin. deep. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who was seen to come down the fire-escape on the morning of the 30th ultimo. Description : About thirty-two years of age, sft. 7in. high, medium build, dressed in a black coat, light check tweed trousers, and a low black hard hat. Can be identified.

New Plymouth. Henry Freethy, engineer, reports stolen from his bedroom, between the 25th and 29th ultimo, a cigarette-case containing £1 155., and a number of Christmas cards. Suspicion attached to Charles Curran, alias Adams, and a man who gave the name of Williams. For description of Curran, see Police Gazette , 1894, page 202. Williams is supposed English, about sft. 6in. high, stout build, about twenty-five years of age, large square heavy features, large forehead, pale complexion, light hair, no beard whiskers or moustache, noticeably small eyes especially when laughing, heavy eyebrows and lashes ; wore a light-brown or fawn-coloured suit, short coat, large bluespotted necktie, and short overcoat. The suspects were living in the house, and left suddenly on the 28th ultimo without paying their board.

Eltiiam. —Martin Lee, platelayer, Te Roti, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 20th ultimo, three £1 notes and 12s. in silver.

“ Tarawera,” s.s. Arnold Wetliered, farmer, Poverty Bay, reports stolen from him on the voyage from Gisborne to Napier, during the night of the 19th ultimo, fifteen £1 notes on the Bank of New South Wales, numbers unknown.

Wellington. —James Fraser, seaman, Karori Crescent, reports that between the 22nd and 26th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : A grey-tweed suit, maker, Dalton, Auckland ; a teawood box, two £lO notes on the Bank of New Zealand, half a dozen dessert knives and forks, 1 dozen white-metal teaspoons, a large album containing photographs, a small bible, and four pieces of quartz : value, £27.

Christchurch. —James Reid, alias Burns, charged with breaking into and stealing from the Christchurch Museum, has been arrested by Chief Detective M. O’Connor, Dunedin police, and remanded to Christchurch. None of the stolen property found on him.

Lyttelton. —Miss Billans, of Wellington, reports stolen from her pocket, between the railway-station, Christchurch, and the Lyttelton Wharf, on the 29ch ultimo, a purse containing a saloon ticket per s.s. “ Penguin ” to Wellington, No.

A 7963, “Miss and Master Billans and Mrs. Osborne’s names on the ticket,” and £3 in gold.

Timaru. —Henry Lawrence Gardiner, Saltwater Creek Hotel, reports stolen from his bedroom, during the night of the 18th ultimo, a £1 note, a sovereign, three half-sovereigns, and a few shillings in silver. Timaru. —Nelly Raynham, of the Mostyn-Dalziel Dramatic Company, reports lost or stolen from her in the Criterion Hotel, on the 21st ultimo, a brooch set with a large sapphire and diamonds on each side; value, £B. Complainant’s address is, 8, James Street, Darlinghurst, Sydney.

Waimate. —The lady’s black silk cloak stolen from John Merry’s dwelling has been found in a paddock near complainant’s house.

Cromwell. —Charles L. Vaughan, a miner, Eight-mile Creek, reports that, between the 24th April and Bth ultimo, his hut was broken into, and the following stolen : A sailmaker’s palm, a chisel, paint-brush, oilstone, soldering-bolt, gimlet, bradawl, some fine gold, and a quantity of groceries; value, £3 7s. 6d.

Mosgiel. —Breaking into and stealing from William Marshall’s dwelling: Robert Carlyle has been arrested for this offence by Constable P. Carmody, Outram police, and committed for trial by the Dunedin Bench. Boots and sheath-knife recovered.

Dunedin. —A. W. Morris, Maori Hill, reports that, on the 2nd or 3rd instant, his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : Three light horn-cups with silver rims, inscribed respectively, “ OH, Pursuing Practice, 1893, Ist, Corpl. Morris,” “ OH, Balaclava Melee, 1893, Ist, Corpl. Morris,” and “ OH, 1894, Ist Pursuing Practice, Sergt. Morris,” and four door-keys ; value, £3 10s.

Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

Auckland. —May Brothers, storekeepers, Jervois Road> report that, on the night of the 25th ultimo, their shop was broken into, and the following stolen: About 201 b. of tobacco, cigars, tea, and other goods, 10s. in silver and copper, and five shillings’ worth of postage-stamps; total value, £ls 10s. 6d.

Auckland. —Elizabeth South, Symond Street, Newton reports that, during the night of the 25th ultimo, her shop was broken into and four pounds five shillings' worth of pipes and tobacco stolen. Suspicion attached to two young men who were in the shop that evening. Description : First, about twenty-four years of age, about sft. sin. high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair, small dark moustache; dressed in a blue-cloth or serge suit, and black soft-felt hat. Gan be identified. Second, twenty-four years of age, sft, sin. high, medium build, dressed in dark - clothes and dark-felt hat.

Auckland. —Thomas Taylor, horse-trainer, Ellerslie, reports stolen from a room in the rear of Mrs. Roderick’s house, Albert Street, on the 25th or 26th ultimo, a safety bicycle, bone mountings on end of handles; value, £l7.

Palmerston North. —Louisa Belford reports stolen from off a clothes-line, on the Ist instant, a ladies’ night-dress, marked “ Mrs. Rembell,” a night-shirt, two white flannel shirts, marks “ T.F.H.” and “ H.” respectively, and a grey singlet; value, £llßs.

Herbertville. —W. and C. Hales report stolen, between the 4th and 7th ultimo, a letter containing a cheque (No. 182281) for £l9, a cheque (No. 80273) for £l, signed respectively by Jobn Linton Armstrong and Francis Armstrong, on the Bank of Australasia, Wellington, and two orders (Nos. 93 and 370) for £6 and £1 respectively, drawn on Murray, Roberts, and Co. The letter was posted at Herbertville, addressed to the manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, and the two cheques were cashed at the bank on the 7th ultimo.

Chbistchurch.— Donald McLennan, grocer, Sydenham, reports that, between the 22nd and 24th ultimo, his shop was broken into, and £2 19s. 6d. worth of groceries and tobacco stolen.

“ Wainui,” s.s. (Westport).— Theft of W. M. Espie’s portmanteau: The boots and shoes described have been found in the forepeak of the vessel, and Patrick McDermott, one of the seamen, is in custody at Wellington on remand for the offence. None of the other articles recovered. The watch is an open-faced gold Rotherham lever, No. 89G72.
