Horse- and Cattle-Stealing.
Rawene (Hokianga). —Michael O’Connell, Taheke, reports stolen from the Punakitere Run, about the Ist January last, a red-and-white steer, two and a half years old ; and a yearling heifer, colour red with a yellow mark about the size of half-a-crovvn at the back of the left fore-leg: value, £4 10s. Suspicion attached to William Smith and a Maori named Ngapeka. Both working on the Taheke gumfields, and well known to the police.

Hamilton. —James Neilson, charged with stealing Charles Newton Le Quesne’s gelding (recovered), is now in Mount Eden Gaol, Auckland, awaiting trial for housebreaking at Helensville.
Marton. —Neil Jansen, carter, reports stolen on the 30th or 31st ultimo, a chestnut mare, six years old, 14 hands high, white blaze down face, branded TUA on off rump, shod all round, value £8; a new colonial saddle, small knee-pads, gullet-plate broken, two white-web girths, value £2 55.; and a single-reined bridle, with snaffle-bit, value 2s. 6d. Suspicion attached to Frederick E. Yentz, who was until recently in complainant’s employ. Description : About thirty years of age, has been a sailor in the German navy, 6ft. high, stout build, swaggering gait, dark complexion, black hair whiskers moustache and full beard; dressed in a dark suit, black overcoat, and soft drab-felt hat. He was seen in Wellington on the Ist instant.
Hastings. —Thomas Murphy (may be a fictitious name) is charged on warrant with having, on the 20th ultimo, stolen a horse, saddle, and bridle, value £ll 10s., the property of Henry George Ulph. Since recovered. Offender is supposed Irish, a labourer or station-hand, about thirty-five years of age, about sft. llin. high, spoken of as a tall, thin man, clean-shaved except dark-sandy moustache, dark hair supposed to be turning grey, longish nose of Roman type, hollow cheeks, face said to be long and thin, with a somewhat wasted and careworn look, low weak voice; when last seen was wearing a dark-grey sac-coat and vest, brown-moleskin trousers, much worn at knees, one having been recently darned, soft black-felt hat, and grey shirt; shabby appearance ; carried a white-canvas swag with billy attached. He sold the property to William Boothman, at Napier, on the 28th ultimo, for £7. A man answering his description left Napier on the following day by the s.s. “ Tasmania ” for Auckland, and went on to Sydney in the same vessel, under the name of Smith.
