Horse- and Cattle-stealing.

Eketahuna.— Charles Neilson is charged on warrant with having, on the 15th instant, stolen a horse, saddle, and bridle, value £lO, the property of Jans Peter Hansen (since recovered). Offender is a Scandinavian, a labourer, has been a sailor, about thirty-five years of age, sft. sin. or Gin. high, stout build, very fair hair and moustache, and about a fortnight’s growth of beard, turns his eyes when speaking, and has a spot on the pupil of one of them; dressed in tweed clothes (red spots in trousers) and hard black-felt hat. He left for Wellington on the 17th instant, accompanied by another Scandinavian, of similar appearance, and who carried a swag.

Wanganui. —The Hon. Dr. Morgan S. Grace, M.L.C., Wellington, reports stolen at Lismore, between April and October last, about one thousand four- and six-toothed ewes and wethers, principally three-quarter-bred Lincoln, all branded on rump with V over a square in black raddle and oil; earmarks : ewe 3, tip off right ear, with slit down centre and hole at side ; wethers similarly marked on left ear. Value, about £4OO. Dr. Grace sells all his sheep to the Wanganui Freezing Company ; therefore any person found in possession of sheep as above described cannot allege that he purchased them from complainant or his manager.

Christchurch. John Sutton, bricklayer, 29, Martin Street, reports stolen from the school grounds, Lincoln Road, on the 26th ultimo, a dark-brown or black gelding, about 15 hands high, twelve years old, no white spot on him, unbranded, broken to saddle and harness ; value, £5.

Camp, and commonly known as “ Stanley.” Amended description: Supposed a native of South Africa, of German descent, well educated, speaks good English, gentlemanly-looking, smart active appearance, very clear white skin, fair beard whiskers and moustacho, trimmed short and coming to a point at chin, scar across nose, tattooing on right arm, and said to have a ship and head below right elbow ; a good billiard-player, and fond of gambling; when last seen was wearing a light-tweed suit and soft brown-felt hat. He was at one time cook at the Hanmer Plains Hotel, and worked for a D. McGuinness at Timaru about three years ago; is also said to be known in Dunedin.

Tapanui. —William Quinn, auctioneer, reports stolen, on the 14th instant, a mottled-grey gelding, seven years old, about 15£ hands high, shod all round, white about face, slit in top of near ear, broken to saddle and harness ; value, £ls.

Invercargill.— George M. Bell, Wantwood Station, Mandeville, reports stolen (supposed), between the Ist June and 10th October last, about one hundred cross-bred ewes, all

supposed in lamb, bell brand on rump, punch-hole in near ear, and some with fore-quarter out of off ear; value, 10s. each.
