Offences Not Otherwise Described.

Waitara. — Ferdinand Bernecker is charged on warrant with having, on the 19th ultimo, forged the signature of J. E. Jeremy to a money-order for 19s. 6d., and fraudulently obtained that amount from the Post-office. Offender is a native of New South Wales, a labourer, twenty-one years of age, about sft. 6in. high, rather stout build, dark hair and complexion, small dark moustache, and very thin fine hair on face; attends Salvation Army meetings.

Hawera. Oswald Stephenson is charged on warrant with quitting the colony and taking with him property to the value of £2O which ought by law to be divided amongst his creditors, being a breach of “The Bankruptcy Act, 1892,” subsection (22) of section 137. Offender is Scotch (broad accent), sft. lOin. or llin. high, about forty years of age, dark hair tinged with grey, short black moustache and side-whiskers, square shoulders, smart military appearance; dressed in a light-tweed suit, knickerbocker trousers, black stockings, and hard black-felt hat; may have a grey ulster with cape. He recently kept a dairy factory at Manaia, and has absconded with a large sum of money. Is well known to officials of the Bank of New Zealand at Auckland (where he is said to have relatives), and is supposed to have left there for Sydney on the 15th or 17th ultimo. (94/1362.)

Eltham (Taranaki). — Mrs. Kate Humphries reports that, between the 30th August last and 3rd ultimo, two of her heifers, valued at £6, were maliciously killed. Suspicion is attached to Charles Paine, who rented a cottage from complainant and was distrained on. He is English, follows no occupation, is said to be in receipt of small remittances, thirty-eight years of age, 6ft. high, slight build, fair complexion, fair moustache only, swellish appearance. He is now at Normanby.

Rawene.— William McLeod, charged with feloniously killing a calf, the property of Mathers W. Lett, has been arrested by Native Constable J. Beazley, and remanded.

Hastings. —Joseph Thompson, alias McNamara, charged with the larceny as a bailee of Reuben Edwards’s saddle and bridle (recovered), has been arrested by Chief Detective M. Grace, Auckland police, and remanded to Te Awamutu on another charge. (See “ Horse- and Cattle-stealing.”)

Wellington.— James Armstrong is charged on warrants with having, on the 3rd ultimo, wilfully damaged the property of, and behaved in a threatening manner to, Ah Lung, U Haining Street. Offender is a native of America, a labourer, twenty-eight to thirty years of age, about sft. sin. high, medium build, dark complexion, black hair, dark eyes; dressed in shabby dark clothes, and hard brown-felt hat. Supposed to have gone south.

Wellington. —Minnie Blair, alms Bearman, is charged on warrant with the theft, on the 14th ultimo, of a Wertheim sewing-machine, No. 6517908, value £7 ; the property of Grace, Clark, and Co., Manners Street. Description: Supposed English, about thirty-five years of age, tall, dark hair and complexion, medium build, cross-eyed ; usually wears dark clothes. Offender obtained the machine on the weeklypayment system, paid off 17s. only, and cleared out, taking it with her. She left Wellington on the above date by the s.s. “ Mararoa,” for Napier and Auckland. Was accompanied by a man named Newman (of whom no description can be given), and will most likely pass as his wife.

Christchurch.— Andrew Veitch is charged on warrant with having forged the signature of William Veitch to a bill for £2O, and uttered the same to Baggs and Duffy, land and estate agents, 131, Colombo Street, on the Ist August last. Description: A native of the North of Ireland, about fifty years of age, about 6ft. high, thin wiry build, dark sallow complexion, clean-shaved except small dark moustache, bridge of nose very flat, end small and turned up ; usually dressed in a dark-tweed suit, and hard black-felt hat. Offender served in the Canterbury Police Force in 1869 and 1872 ; and recently kept a boarding-house on the South Belt, Christchurch. He is said to have forged other bills, now in circulation, to the amount of £7OO. Last seen in Auckland on the 17th ultimo, and is supposed to have left there on the following day by s.s. “ Mararoa ” for Sydney.

Christchurch.— James Martin (name probably fictitious) is charged on warrant with having, on the 11th ultimo, forged and uttered to Thomas Armstrong, draper, a cheque for £4 ss. Offender is a colonial, about eighteen years of age, sft. 7in. or Sin. high, fair freckled complexion, no hair on face ;

dressed in a grey-tweed sac-suit (garments of different patterns), and soft felt hat, worn at back of head. Supposed identifiable. The cheque purports to be signed by Thomas Gapes, Mayor, by whom offender said he was employed, but has been declared a forgery.

Kaiapoi. —John Dickie is charged on warrant of commitment for three months’ labour for using indecent language ; also to one month in default of paying £3 11s., fine and costs for procuring liquor for a prohibited person. Description : A native of Kaiapoi, twenty years of age, sft. lOin. or llin. high, light-blue eyes, slender build, dark or swarthy complexion, dark hair, clean-shaved except very small dark moustache, bad-looking; wore a dark-grey coat and vest, white-moleskin trousers, and soft black hat. He passed through Kaikoura under the name of Jackson, and was wearing a footballer’s jumper. Is supposed to have gone towards Blenheim, or the North Island.

Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c. Auckland. —Thomas Henry Roxburgh, dealer, Grey Street, reports that on the 12th or 13tli ultimo his shop was broken into and the following stolen : An old gold Geneva doublecased watch, value 175.; a silver Geneva open-faced watch, No. 55159, value 155.; a nickel-plated open-faced keyless watch, value 10s.; and a pair of gold earrings, leaf-pattern, greenstone in centre, very old-fashioned, value 10s.

Auckland. —James Bertie, seaman, Sailors’ Home, reports that about 11 p.m. on the 15th ultimo he was assaulted by three men and robbed of a silver Geneva watch, x scratched with a pin on case ; a silver albert chain with key and coloured stone; £2 in cash; a gold horseshoe pin (tail of whip broken off) ; and a black-hair chain : value, £5 10s. 6d. Complainant can give no description of the assailants.

New' Plymouth.— Annie Humpry reports stolen from a bedroom at Stanley’s boarding-house, between the 20th and 22nd ultimo, a £lO note on the Bank of New Zealand.

Martinborough. Victor Sjostrom reports stolen from him, while drunk in the Club Hotel during the night of the 2nd ultimo, seven £1 notes and 10s. in silver. Suspicion attached to Olof Hagerstrom, a Swede, about thirty years of age, sft. 7in. high, full ginger beard and moustache, bald on top of head ; wore a rough blue paget coat, soft drab billycock hat, new watertight boots, new long brown-leather leggings, and spurs. It is supposed he will endeavour to leave the colony for Coolgardie, Western Australia. (See also “ Horseand Cattle-stealing.”)

Wellington. —Morris C. Robison, Bank of Australasia, reports stolen on the 24th ultimo a brown Melton-cloth covert-coat, nearly new, peculiar bright-coloured hairy lining to sleeves, two ordinary and one small match-pocket outside, one pocket inside, brown bone buttons; the seams do not overlap as is usual in coats of this make, and there is no seam at the back; “ Kirkcaldie and Stains ” on tab ; value, £5.

(See Police Gazette, 1894, page 140.) Christchurch. —Robert Dailey’s watch and chain and Henry J. Smith’s boots have been recovered from John Wilson, a secondhand dealer in Colombo Street, who states he cannot describe and could not identify the person from whom he purchased them.

Lyttelton. —Patrick John Gilmore, boarding-housekeeper, reports stolen -from a sitting-room on the 19th or 20th ultimo two table-covers —one blue damask, the other heavy blue tapestry, with red flowers; value, £1 10s.

Dunedin. —William Beath, Duncan Street, reports stolen from him in Mary McManus’s brothel, Athol Place, during the night of the 18th ultimo, one £lO and two £1 notes.

Timaru. —Thomas Thompson, draper, reports that, during the night of the 20tli ultimo, his dwelling in Elizabeth Street was broken into, and 2s. 9d. in silver, and two bunches of keys stolen. His shop in Stafford Street was also broken into, and the following stolen therefrom: A large scarlet blanket; a large brown-check Roslyn rug ; a sealskin ditto, black on one side, mixed colours on the other ; four leather cloak-straps; and £3 15s. in silver from the safe, which was opened by its key, and locked again : total value, £7 Bs. 9d.
