Horse- and Cattle-Stealing.

Te Awamutu. —Joseph McNamara is charged on warrant with the theft of a horse, saddle, and bridle, value £6, the property of Henry Lewis, hotelkeeper. Since recovered. Description: A half- or quarter-caste Maori, twenty-five years of age, sft. 9in. high, dark or sallow complexion, very thin, slight dark-brown moustache only, scar on nose ; wore a light-tweed suit (trousers of a lighter shade than coat) and soft black-felt hat; a labourer, and horse-trainer, &c. Offender hired the horse, saddle, &c., on the Bth instant, and sold the

lot two days later to N. Ferguson, at Hamilton, for £3. He is identical with Joseph Thompson, alias McNamara, charged with a similar offence at Hastings on 12th October last. (See Police Gazette , 1893, page 161, 1891, page 7, and 1888, page 49.) He went to Auckland by train on the 10th instant, and spoke of going to Coolgardie, but this is considered to be a ruse.

Rawene. —Catherine Ammon, Taheke, Hokianga, reports stolen from a paddock at Punakitere, between the 12th and 15th ultimo, a dark-bay colt, half-bred, by “ Matakokeri,” rising one year, white blaze running from forehead down on nose, turning to off nostril, front fetlocks and one hind hoof white, no brand; value, £lO.

Martinborough. — August Lhaman reports stolen from the Club Hotel paddock, during the night of the 2nd instant, a bay mare, branded X in a circle, hind feet white, white blaze down face, mark of having been recently staked on rump ; value, £ls. Suspicion attached to Olof ITagerstrom, a Swede, about thirty years of age, sft. 7in. high, full ginger beard and moustache, bald on top of head; wore a rough blue paget-coat, soft drab billycock hat, new watertight boots, new long brown-leather leggings, and spurs. May endeavour to leave the colony for Coolgardie, Western Australia. (See also “Housebreaking, stealing from the person, &c.”)

Clyde (Otago). —James McArthur, Strath-Clyde, reports stolen from a paddock, between the Ist ultimo and the 6th instant, about twenty-two half-bred sheep, six- and eighttoothed, mostly wethers, branded JM on back, and a bar, thus , on rump, top off one ear, and a slit in the other.

(See Police Gazette , 1894, page 133.) Dunedin. —James Gray’s mare has been found dead in a gully in his paddock. Suspicion is therefore no longer attached to the man McKay.
