Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Auckland. —Albert Kells, Albert Street, reports that, on the 30th ultimo, his dwelling was broken into, and a ladies’ silver open-faced watch, value £2, stolen. Suspicion attached to a man, about thirty years of age, sft. lOin. high, slight build, clean shaved except small brown moustache; wore a dark-tweed suit, hard black hat, and patent-leather leggings. Can be identified by a boy who saw him near the door.

Auckland. —Andrew Heavy, second-hand dealer, Chapel Street, reports stolen from his shop, on the 30th ultimo, a portmanteau, value £3. It was sold on the same day to Lionel Levy by a man who gave the name of G. Johnston, about thirty years of age, sft. 9in. or lOin. high, medium build, clean shaved except brown moustache, dressed in shabby clothes. Can be identified.

Auckland. —John Thomas Bosworth’s opera-glasses have been recovered, and Henry John Atkins arrested for the offence by Constable W. A. Bailey, and committed for trial.

Suspicion is attached to William Smith, a gumdigger, twenty-five years of age, sft. Bin. high, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair, small fair moustache. Lives in the neighbourhood.

Auckland. —John Green, draper, Queen Street, reports stolen from his shop, on the sth instant, ten cotton shirts, mixed check ; value, £l9s. 2d. Seven of them were sold on the following day to James Lindsay, a second-hand dealer, by a man unknown, about fifty years of age, sft. Gin. or Tin. high, stout build, dark hair, full dark whiskers; dressed in a black coat and vest, light-tweed trousers, and hard black hat.

Auckland.— Thomas John Stewart, farmer, Mongonui, reports stolen from him while under the influence of liquor, in Auckland, on the 11th instant, a double-faced Geneva nickel-silver watch, B scratched on outside of case, value £2; £1 10s. in cash; and two red-leather purses, value 4s.

Auckland. —Charles Henry Dodge, Prince of Wales Hotel, Hobson Street, reports that between 12.30 and 6 a.m. on the 12th instant his office was broken into, and the following stolen : A black japanned cash-box, containing letters, hotellicenses for 1891, 1892, and 1893 ; a club-shaped greenstone pendant, gold-mounted ; a 15-carat gold albert guard, curbpattern, silver hook at end ; a small gold bar detached from guard ; and about ss. in silver : total value, £6.

Auckland. Henry Andrew Ellison, tobacconist, Grey Street, reports that on the sth or 6th instant his shop was broken into, and about £22 worth of tobacco and cigars stolen.

Te Aroha. —Edward Grange, Morrinsville, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 9th instant, a silver lever doublecased Botherbam watch, No. 6977 ; value, £4.

Kamo. —Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of Alexander Allison, Moengawahina : George Morfett has been arrested for this offence by Constable F. A. Moore, Kamo Police, and the gun recovered. Case dismissed by the Whangarei Bench.

Christchurch. —William Warner, alias Alfred Gregory, &c., is charged on warrant with having, on the Ist or 2nd instant, stolen from the dwelling of Julia Mary Glover, Colombo Street, a ladies’ cloak, value £4 10s : since recovered. Offender is a native of London, a labourer, sixty-four years of age, sft. 9|in. high, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, blue eyes, crooked nose ; dressed in an old black coat, brown trousers, soft grey-felt hat, and watertight boots ; very much addicted to drink. Christchurch. —The Railway Commissioners report that between 9.25 p.m. on the 10th and 7 a.m. on the 11th instant the Heathcote Railway-station was broken into and the following stolen : Three £1 notes, £5 4s. lOd. in silver, and £1 10s. worth of postage-stamps, the property of the Commissioners ; and £B, the property of Horatio W. Lawrell, Stationmaster. The stations at Woolston and Opawa were also broken into during the same hours, and attempts made to force open the safes, but nothing stolen.

Christchurch. —Henry Staunton, lower High Street, reports stolen from outside his shop, on the 13th instant, three pairs of men’s shooting-boots, viz., one size 10, basillined, round nails; one kip, size 6, steel sprigs; and one ordinary, size not known, round nails; heel- and toe-plates to each : value, £1 14s. 6d. Identification doubtful.

Christchurch. William Irvine, cabman, Rotherfield Hotel, reports stolen from him whilst drunk on the 26th ultimo a silver lever hunting-watch, No. 28636 ; value, £4.

Christchurch. —David Lindsay, farmer, Makikihi, reports stolen from him whilst drunk in Christchurch, on the 30th or 31st ultimo, a gold Geneva lever keyless huntingwatch, brass dome, stamped “ 14 carat,” maker and number unknown, and a gold curb-pattern guard; value, £ll.

Christchurch. —William Strange and Co. report that between the 2nd and 4th instant their premises were broken into, and a determined but unsuccessful attempt made to break open the safe, the words “No time and little room; bad luck ” being written thereon with a piece of candle by the offenders. Nothing stolen.

Dunedin. —Robert Webster, City Road, Roslyn, reports that, on the 10th or lltli instant, his shop was broken into, and the following stolen: About thirty pairs of men’s and youths’ watertight boots, Arrow brand ; and two pairs of men’s glazed Balmorals, no brand; the value (15s. 6d.) marked with ink on a heel of each pair.
