Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Auckland. —Robert Clarke, Manukau Road, Epsom, reports stolen from his dwelling, between the sth September last and sth instant, two white table-cloths, almost new, one large size, the other small; and a white-linen sheet, marked “R. Clarke, No. 3, 1878 ; ” value £3. Identifiable.

Auckland. —Susan Hamley, Karangahape Road, reports stolen from her at the cattle-show, Epsom, on the 11th instant, an old dark-brown-leather purse, containing £2 10s. Purse identifiable.

Auckland. —George Sibbins, Edward Street, Devonport, reports stolen from off his verandah, between the Btli and 12th instant, nine Fijian shells —five known as “ spider,” and the others as “ tiger ; ” value £1 10s. Identifiable.

Auckland. —Sarah Jacobs, licensee, City Club Hotel, reports stolen from her office, on the 12th instant, twelve £1 notes, £3 10s. in silver, five Jubilee sovereigns, a half-sove-reign, Jubilee florin, four-shilling piece, dated 1888, and a ladies’gold open-faced watch, maker’s name and number unknown ; value £3l 6s. Watch identifiable.

Auckland. — Edward Hope, Ardmore, Papakura, reports stolen from him at the Auckland Railway-station, on the 14th September last, a gold Geneva keyless hunting-watch, about the size of a shilling, No. 16064, glass broken in front; and a gold albert-chain, EAH engraved on lob; value £26 10s. Suspicion attached to Henry Follas Ercny, a passenger with complainant in the s.s. “ Talune ” from Sydney on the above date, and who accompanied him to the station. Suspect is now awaiting trial for larceny from Regan’s Hotel, Freeman’s Bay.

(See Police Gazette, 1892, page 188.) Russell. —Breaking into and stealing from the Post-office, Opua: Matuakore and Eruera, half-caste Maoris, have been arrested for this offence and discharged for want of sufficient evidence. None of the stolen property recovered.

Wanganui. —Thomas James Gibbs reports stolen from his dwelling on the Industrial School Reserve, on the 13th instant, a ladies’ gold lever half hunting-watch, makers Russell and Son, Liverpool, number unknown, AEG in monogram on back; and a ladies’ gold double albert-chain, long links, with gold tassel-pendants; value £l7. Suspicion attached to Mary Connor, complainant’s servant.

Pahiatua.— Mrs. E. Bacon reports that about 10.30 p.m. on the 14th instant, while crossing the river-bed near Pahiatua, she was accosted by a man who robbed her of a kid purse, 4in. by 3in., two compartments, containing about £7 ; a ladies’ silver Geneva double-cased watch, maker and number unknown, with silver chain, cord-pattern, and tassel attached ; a wedding-ring and keeper; value in all £l3 2s. 6d. Complainant states that the thief pulled a mask off his face, but she can give no description of him except that he had a nice soft hand. The case is considered doubtful.

Te Nui. —Arthur Turner, Akitio, reports stolen from his bunk, on the sth instant, a £5 note, bank and number unknown. Suspicion attached to Robert Thompson, a quartercaste negro, at present in Masterton. (For his description see Police Gazette, 1889, page 38.)

Christchurch. —Charles Colwell, at Mr. Cameron’s, Springfield, reports stolen from him, when entering the circus at Christchurch, about 7 p.m. on the 11th instant, a brownleather pocketbook, sin. by 3in., with flaps and elastic band, one side darker than the other, nearly new, paper inside for writing on, containing two £lO notes on Colonial Bank (Christchurch branch), four £1 ditto, believed on same bank ; and a florin. One of the £lO notes can be identified, as it is very black and dirty, the reading, except at one end, being scarcely legible.

Christchurch. —James Stewart, Queen Street, Sydenham, reports stolen from his shop, between the 18th and 20th ultimo, a ratchet-brace, about forty bits, various sorts ; two paring chisels, a cold-chisel, fitters’ hammer, hollow plane, nine plough-irons, a carpenters’basket, and some sandpaper; complainant’s name on the irons and plane ; value £3 ss.

Christchurch. —Alexander Smith reports stolen from the passage of the Wellington Hotel, Tuam Street, on the 10tli instant, a grey-cloth overcoat, light-coloured-silk lining, two hip-pockets, a match-pocket, and one inside and outside of breast, several tobacco-stains on right side in front; a pair of dogskin gloves and a strawberry-coloured-silk handkerchief ; value £2 15s. Identifiable.

Pleasant Point. —Richard Ghute reports that, between the 7th and 10th instant, his dwelling was broken into, and £4 ss. 9d. and a dirty white handkerchief, hole in centre, stolen.

Dunedin. —Christina McDonald reports that, about 9.40 p.m. on the 13th instant, she was assaulted in the Caversham Industrial School grounds by a man, who robbed her of a ladies’ black-silk umbrella, steel ribs(one broken), black wooden handle with round knob ; value 10s. Identifiable. Offender is supposed English, about thirty-one years of age, about sft. Sin. or 9in. high, medium build, fair hair and complexion, light moustache only; dressed in light-grey-tweed sac-coat, dark trousers, and hard brown-felt hat. His identification is doubtful. Complainant is laundress at the school.

Dunedin. —Thomas Myall, for assaulting and robbing William Watson, has been arrested by Constable M. O’Connor, and remanded.

Naseby. —A. W. Stables, traveller for the Dunedin Hardware Company, reports stolen from his bedroom, at Horswell’s Hotel, on the 10th instant, a £5 note, and a silver hunting-watch, No. 104457, makers Stewart, Dawson, and Co.; value £3 10s. Suspicion attached to Charles Beresford, alias Frank O’Neill, and Thomas Casey, alias Thomas King, alias Liverpool Jack, &c. (See Police Gazette, 1892, page 186, &c.) The former went to the Oamaru District, and the latter has been arrested and committed for trial on a charge of rape.

Opiiir. Samuel Templeton, miner, Matakanui, reports stolen from an unoccupied hut, between the 30th ultimo and the 9th instant, two pairs of double blankets, blue and grey respectively, both somewhat worn; a flock mattress (striped), a calico ditto, two towels, woollen drawers, nearly - new ; a pair of scissors with points off, and sundry other articles, which complainant cannot describe; value £5. Grey blankets, mattresses, and scissors identifiable.

(See Police Gazette, 1892, page 128.) Wyndham.— Stealing James Telfcr’s gold watch : Henry Budd, a local saddler, has been arrested by Constable D. Bogue for this offence, and committed for trial. Suspicion no longer attached to James Bain. The watch has been recovered by the Christchurch Detective Police.
