Murder.
£250 Reward.—Whereas on the night of the 25th July, 1892, Richard Bell, a farmer, was shot at Lora Gorge, Southland (about fifteenmiles from Winton): And whereas a doublebarrelled gun (hereinafter described) was found close to the spot where deceased was shot, with one barrel discharged, and was no doubt the weapon used by the murderer, and such gun is now in possession of the Invercargill Police : It is hereby notified that a reward of £250 will be given to the person who first gives information as shall lead to the proof of in whose possession the gun was at the time of the said murder, or immediately previous thereto; such information to bo given to the police not later than the Ist of February, 1893. Description of the gun: Double-barrelled, muzzle-loading, apparently new, of very inferior quality, and cheap kind; has the appearance of having lain in a damp place for some time; the ramrod is a manuka-twig, broken at the thick end, and about shorter than the barrels ; the name “ Moore ” is stamped on each lock-plate, a crown at tho back of hammer, and “ London ” on the bead-line between the barrels, about Gin. from the breech ; it is marked No. 13 on the web under the barrels, also SV, the latter letter horizontal ; a small screw is missing from the left lock, and the left hammer does not work so freely as the right one. The right barrel was found loaded with powder somewhat dirty, No. 3 shot, slightly corroded, and wadding of ordinary brown paper. R. J. SEDDON. Defence Department, Wellington, 3rd October, 1892.
