Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.
Auckland. —W. White, Victoria Street West, reports stolen from his shop, on the 6th ultimo, a pair of men’s blue-canvas shoes, size 7, and a pair of men’s boots, not described; value 15s.
Dargaville. Edmund Baxter Aimer, teacher, reports that, between 7 a.m. on the 13th and 9 a.m. on the 15th ultimo, the Native school at Wai Mauuku was broken into, and the following stolen : Three dozen slates, three teachers’ registers, fifty copy-books, a hand-bell, and fifty assorted books (since recovered in an adjoining creek); value £3 Os. Bd.; the property of the Government. Registers and bell identifiable. Maoris at Opanake suspected.
IYIXew Plymouth. —Thomas Power, Durham Road, Inglewood, reports that, between 1 p.m. and G p.m. on the 17th ultrnio, his dwelling was broken into, and the following s»Mj: A silver lever half-liunting-watch, No. 18963, makers Thomson and Pine, a leather guard, very fine strands, and a •Jight-blue-silk handkerchief; value £B.
Hawera. —Denis O’Mahoney, Ketemaraea, reports stolen from his dwelling, during the past six or seven weeks, a ladies’ gold ring, set with three small diamonds; value £3. Suspicion attached to Amelia Shorter, a servant recently in complainant’s employ, eighteen years of age, about sft. 2in. high, stout build, fair complexion, round full face. Supposed gone to Wanganui in company with George Harney, about twenty-eight years of age, sft. Bin. or 9in. high, dark hair and moustache.
Wellington. —Thomas Tonkin, Edward Street, reports stolen from him, while drunk and asleep in the back bar of the Empire Hotel, on the 22nd ultimo, an English silver lever open-faced watch, No. 33462; value £3.
Pahautanui. —James Wall, sheep-farmer, reports stolen from his hut at Pukerua, between the 15th and 22nd ultimo, two single dark-grey blankets and a blue-enamelled mug; value £1 2s. Identification doubtful. Suspicion attached to a tramp, about forty-five years of age, sft. 9in. high, slight build, upright gait, dark complexion, full dark beard; dressed in a shabby black coat and vest, dark-tweed trousers, and soft black-felt hat. Went towards Otaki and Palmerston North.
Danevirke. Charles A. Gay, boarder, Railway Hotel, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 22nd ultimo, a silver watch-guard, small twisted links, with silver-mounted greenstone pendant, ljin. long, attached; value £1 155.; and 19s. in silver.
Christchurch. Margaret Penny, laundress, Coleridge Street, Sydenham, reports stolen, on the 12th or 13th ultimo, a large galvanised-iron tub, bottom dented, containing five white shirts, two of them with black cording across breasts, and marked “ Mclntyre ” on small tabs; eighteen linen collars, men’s and boys’, supposed marked with the same name; a girl’s white-lawn dress with embroidered skirt, jacket sailor-fashion ; a girl’s embroidered pinafore, and a pair of white-calico drawers; value £3. Identifiable.
Lyttelton. —James Haddon reports stolen from his bag, at the Railway Hotel, on the 12th ultimo, three pairs of white-woollen knitted drawers, three cotton shirts, two white-striped, the other check - pattern ; three light-blue under-flannels, three pairs of new woollen socks, three pairs of trousers, one blue cloth with double seat and knees, one dark tweed, the other brown plaid ; three dungaree jumpers, three shirts, one brown, one blue, the other grey; three white-drill jumpers, a pair of sea-boots, and a sou’-wester ; value £7. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Peter Tolaud, a ship’s cook, has been a soldier, supposed Scotch, about thirty-three years of age, sft. lOin. high, erect gait, smart active appearance, light-brown hair, sandy moustache only ; dressed in dark-brown paget-coat, dark-tweed trousers, no vest, and soft dark hat with very broad brim. He was seen recently at Ashburton, looking for work.
Temuka. —Mrs. Ellen Raddick reports stolen from her dwelling, on the 16th ultimo, three £1 notes, 9s. in silver, and a leather clasp-purse with three compartments. Purse identifiable.
Dunedin. —May Turner reports stolen from Kate Scott’s brothel, Leith Street, a black wooden box, lOin. by sin., containing a ladies’ silver Geneva watch, EF engraved on outside case ; a silver watch-chain, three-link-cable pattern ; a brooch made of three jubilee shillings (gilt), one brooch made of a jubilee half-crown, one amber brooch (rose-pattern), and a brass brooch set with five imitation-diamonds ; value £4 ss. Identifiable.
Nelson. —Peter Hastie reports stolen from the diningroom of the Coach and Horses Hotel, on the 20th or 21st ultimo, a waterproof-coat lined with brown check with cape ; value £3. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Brighting, English, an umbrella-maker, now travelling with a shooting-gallery, thirty-two years of age, medium build, about sft. G£in. high, dark hair and moustache only, sallow complexion ; wore an old tweed coat and soft white-felt hat. Gone to Havelock. Complainant’s address is said to be Willis Street, Wellington.
(See Police Gazette, 1892, page 16.) Wellington. —Larceny of Thomas Seward’s billiard-balls from the Pier Hotel: Charles Ninkey, alias Johnston, has been arrested for this offence by Chief Detective W. Campbell, and committed for trial. Property recovered.
Wanganui. A man, name unknown, is charged on warrant with having, on the 26th ultimo, stolen from the shop of John Irvine, tinsmith, Taupo Quay, a copper solder-ing-bit ; value ss. 6d. Identifiable. Offender is English, a tinsmith, twenty-six or twenty-seven years of age, about sft. 7in. high, slender build, pale complexion, dark hair and small moustache only, smart appearance; wore blue-serge sac-coat and black-and-white straw hat. Said he had been working at Plimmer’s tinware factory, Wellington. He left by the 1.5 p.m. train for the South next day.
Wanganui. —Douglas Gordon Forlong reports stolen from his whare, Long-acre Valley, on the 26th ultimo, an old brown-leather clasp-purse, containing three £1 notes and about 10s. in silver. Purse identifiable.
Auckland.—A man, name unknown, is charged with having, on the 20th ultimo, stolen from the Wharf Boarding-
house, Queen Street, a trunk of clothing; value £6 ; the property of Isaac Greig; since recovered. Offender, who pledged the articles at Gold water’s pawn-office shortly after the theft, and then gave the name of Turnbull, is English, a labourer and gum-digger, about thirty-four years of age, sft. Tin. high, medium build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, light-brown beard moustache and thin whiskers, narrow features ; dressed in old grey-tweed suit and soft black-felt hat. He is probably identical with Arthur Tilby, alias Bartlett, alias Baldwin, alias Thompson (see Police Gazette, 1888, page 245), and is supposed to have gone to the gumfields.
Dunedin. —John Carruthers, ship “ Stuart,” reports stolen from a bedroom in the Leviathan Hotel, on the 27th or 28th ultimo, a small oval-shaped leather purse, much worn, containing a£s note and £lO 10s. in gold. Purse identifiable.
Dunedin. —David Dawson, jeweller, Princes Street, reports stolen from his counter, on the 27th ultimo, a gold bracelet with filigree - work on top; value £1 15s. Identification doubtful.
Dunedin. —The Manages of the Otago Daily Times Company, High.StrerLjß6tfbrts stolen from the office, on the 2Gth or 27th handle valugf 65., containing 10s. or 12s. in silver, the broken fJandle, and two postage-stamps. Employes suspected.
Christchurch. —John Pearcy, bootmaker, 171, Colombo Street, reports stolen from his shop-door, on the 19th or 20th ultimo, a pair of men’s kip lace-up boots, size 9, but not marked, copper-riveted, toe- and heel-plates, steel sprigs on soles; value £l. Identifiable.
Spring Grove (Nelson). —John O’Neill, Belgrove, reports stolen from his tent, on the 25th or 26th ultimo, a £5 note, bank and number unknown. Suspicion attached to Ernest Baker, a Frenchman, about forty years of age, sft. 7in. or Bin. high, dark complexion hair whiskers and moustache, quick gait; dressed in dark suit and hard black-felt hat. Went to Nelson on the Ist instant.
Eketahuna. —James C. Cooper reports stolen from his whare, Mangamahoe, between the 24th and 28tli ultimo, a grey-tweed suit, size 5 or 6, a dark vest, silver albert, bee alarm-clock, towel, and red-cotton handkerchief; value £3 16s. 6d. Walter Mason also reports stolen therefrom, during the same days, a long silver chain, small split curbpattern ; a pair of new tweed trousers, black- and greystriped ; white single blanket, and a black-tweed hat, makers Ballantyne and Co., Christchurch and Timaru ; value £3 Is. 6d.
Auckland. —Alexander Douglas, Pokeno, reports stolen from the Nevada Hotel, on the 26th ultimo, a brown-paper parcel containing about 12 yards of grey-cotton dressmaterial ; value 15s. Identifiable.
Pukekoiie. —James Dilworth, storekeeper, reports stolen, on the 26th or 27th ultimo, four wooden pipes and a pocketknife ; value ss. Identifiable.
Hastings. —Peter Ramsay, hotelkeeper, Fernhill, reports stolen from his store, between 8.30 p.m. on tbe 2nd and 8 a.m. on the 3rd instant, a £1 note, half-sovereign, £4 in silver, about 51b. Juno tobacco, three bars of soap, and a cash-box, about 9in. by. 6in. by containing three halfsovereigns and invoices. Entrance effected by forcing open the side window with a chisel and screwdriver, which were picked up outside.
Methven. —James Nee, contractor, reports stolen from his hut, between the 14th and 17th ultimo, one £5 and three £1 notes, and 14s. 6d. in silver. Suspicion attached to Edward Kerr, a nath'e of the colony, a labourer, seventeen years of age, about sft. 6in. high, slender build, fair hair and complexion, no hair on face, large mouth; believed to be dressed in a new tweed-suit and hard black-felt hat. Supposed gone to Christchurch.
