Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Auckland. — William Albert Fenton, butcher, Wakefield Street, reports stolen from his shop, on the sth or 6th instant, 11s. in coppers, and some certificates, written in French and English, recommending him to war-vessels.

Auckland.— Larceny from the shop of John Edwards, College Road, Ponsonby: The suspect, Margaret Turner, has been arrested by Constable H. Clarke, Auckland Police, and committed for trial. The following articles were traced to her possession and recovered: Gold watch-chain, locket, ladies’ gold watch, double-cased silver watch, silver bracelet, gold pencil-case, two pairs of earrings, and gold cross.

Huntly. —Kate Fletcher, State-school-teacher, Ohinewai, reports that, about the 17th ultimo, her dwelling was broken into, but nothing was stolen.

Christchurch.— John Thomas Matson, Papanui Road, reports stolen from his dwelling, between the 14th and 27th ultimo, 12lb. 9Joz. of undressed ostrich-feathers, about lib. of them grey and the remainder white, 18in. to 27in. long, and from 7in. to lOin. broad, tied in bundles of four to six at the quill-end with dark-coloured wool; eighty to eighty-five feathers to the pound; value £l5O. Identification doubtful.

Christchurch. —Mrs. C. F. Walters, Christ’s College, reports stolen from the counter at Ballantyne’s drapery-shop, Cashel Street, on the 26th ultimo, an ivory card-case, about Sin. by 2Jin. by ljin., square at ends, carved in Chinese figures, containing some of complainant’s cards; value £2. Identifiable.

Dunedin. —William G. Neill, Arthur Street, reports stolen from his verandah, on the sth or 6th instant, a cocoanut-fibre door-mat, 3ft. 6in. by 3ft., nearly new; value £2. Identifiable.

Picton. —Henry Chiverson, driver of the Blenheim coach, reports stolen from his room in the Terminus Hotel, on the 7th or Bth instant, about £8 in half-sovereigns and silver, and a pair of grey saddle-tweed trousers, size 4, half-worn, strapped with tweed of a darker colour, hip-pockets, brass

buttons, hole at each knee ; value 10s. Suspicion attached to Van Dieman Tasman Steinmuller, who occupied the same room. Description: A native of Tasmania, a stableman, twenty years of age, sft. 6in. or 7in. high, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, hazel eyes, scar on right hand and left arm. He is said to have been in Wellington on the 9th instant, and was going to Marton, where he has a brother-in-law, whose name is not known. Complainant’s statement as to the money, which belonged to Mr. McKenzie, of Blenheim, is considered rather doubtful.

Auckland. —Alfred Beatson, Coburg Street, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 11th instant, a nickel-silver clock, oblong shape, 9in. long, glass at sides, one of them broken ; value £1 ss. Identifiable.

Wellington. —Forest Florey, Timaru Boardinghouse, reports stolen from the parlour of the Pier Hotel, on the 18th or 19th instant, a carpet-bag containing a pair of navy-blue trousers, saddle-tweed riding-breeches, brown-tweed coat and vest, and five shirts, one white linen, one grey, and the others pink and white ; value £5. Identifiable.

Kaikoura (Marlborough).— John H. Sandford, carpenter, reports stolen from an unoccupied shop, next to the Club Hotel, during December last, a violin in light-coloured wooden case ; value £5. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Charles H. Morris, a native of the colony, a labourer, eighteen years of age, about sft. 7in. high, medium build, fair complexion and hair. Now in Lyttelton Gaol.

Dunedin.— John Dove Dunn, Town Belt, Nevada, Roslyn, reports stolen from his scullery, on the 15th instant, seven and a half pairs of ladies’ black stockings marked J with red cotton, two pairs of men’s grey socks, a white toilet-cover, about a dozen children’s embroidered pinafores, about eighteen handkerchiefs various sizes, some marked J, others ELZ; two large cream-coloured silk handkerchiefs, and a boys’ white-muslin dress with deep embroidery; value £3 Bs.

Wellington. —Joseph Metz, pawnbroker, Cuba Street, reports that, about 4.45 a.m. on the 20th instant, an attempt was made to break into his shop by removing the shutters and breaking a window, but nothing was stolen.
