Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Stolen at about 9 p.m. on the sth instant, from the bedroom of Walter Exton, Alicetown, Lower Hutt, Wellington, a. small wooden box containing seven £1 notes (bank and numbers unknown) and three half-sovereigns. Suspicion attached to James Turner, who formerly occupied the room, and was the only person who knew where the money was kept. Description : A Londoner, working manager, Alicetown Gut-factory, thirty years of age, sft. 7in. high, medium build, fair complexion and hair, small fair moustache, small eyes, speaks with short quick accent, leans forward when walking; usually dresses in dark-tweed suit. The box, minus money, was picked up about a hundred yards from complainant’s house on the following morning.

Between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the 24th ultimo the dwelling of Charles Brunn, Te Arolia West, Tauranga district, was broken into and about £2 in silver stolen. Entrance gained through an unfastened window.

Stolen on the 28th ultimo, at 5 p.m., from the doorway of William McCulloch’s drapery-shop, Queen Street, Auckland, a brass hand-bell, 41b. weight, dark-brown stained wooden handle; value 7s. Gd.; the property of Thomas Gibbons, Franklin Road, who left it alongside some goods while making a purchase. Identifiable.

Stolen between 4 p.m. on the 29th and 9 a.m. on the 30th ultimo, from the front tap-room of the Britomart Hotel, Custom Street East, Auckland, a sailor’s bag containing a black-cloth sac-suit, a pair of moleskin trousers, a white blanket, a hair pillow-slip, three white shirts, five coloured Crimean shirts, two pairs of men’s drawers, a table knife fork and spoon, a pair of old blucher boots, and a piece of green-muslin bed-curtain, all rather worn ; value £3 ; the property of Samuel Cameron, a seaman, who left Auckland on the 4th instant on board the ship “ Oamaru ” for Napier cn route to England. Identifiable.

A warrant has been issued by the Bench at Rakaia, Christchurch district, for the arrest of a man, name unknown, for having between 3 and 3.30 p.m. on the 6th instant, at Methven, stolen a cheque for £8 6s. 7d. (since recovered), the property of James Brown. Offender presented the cheque on the following day at Mr. Alcorn’s shop, Ashburton, in payment for a cardigan jacket and red-and-white cotton shirt, and received the balance in change. He is believed to be identical with Patrick Harkin, who was in complainant’s company when* 'the cheque' was missed. Harkin is a native of Derry, Ireland, a labourer, sft. 9in. or lOin. high, medium build, thin features, fresh complexion, brown hair beard whiskers and moustache, long front teeth ; dressed in dark coat, brown-tweed trousers, broad soft blackfelt liat, blaek-and-brown check woollen scarf with fringe at each end ; may be wearing the cardigan jacket (black or dark-brown) purchased as above. Said he was going from Ashburton to Timaru by express on the 7th instant. Complainant resides at Rakaia.

Stolen at 6.30 p.m. on the 11th instant, from a handbag in the dwelling of Mary Rendall, Frederick Street, Dunedin, a yellow leather purse, 4in. by 2Jin., containing three jubilee

sovereigns, 16s. in silver, a Chinese coin, and a ticket for a watch and chain pawned at Isaac’s, Dunedin; purse and pawn-ticket identifiable. Suspicion attached to Bella McKenzie and Mary Jane Parks, who were in the house at the time. Description : First, about eighteen years of age, medium size and build, fair hair and complexion, rather good looking; second, about the same age as McKenzie, rather tall, slender build, dark hair and complexion. Both still in Dunedin.

Larceny of a ring from Nottingham Cottage, Herbert Street, Wellington, the property of Ella Escott: Eliza Hose has been arrested for this offence by Detective Herbert, Wellington Police, and remanded; ring found in her possession.

Stolen on the 13th instant, between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., from Bernard Meenan, at Wellington, a silver hunting English lever watch, maker Hurlston, number unknown, B.M. on outside of case ; value £5. Identifiable. Also about £7 in £1 bank notes. Complainant was drunk at the time, and can give no further particulars.

Stolen between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on the lltli instant, from a bedroom in Quoi’s restaurant, Queen Street, Auckland, a light-grey mackintosh, with buttons of same colour, no cape, full size, and nearly new ; value £1 155.; the property of Henry Pomeroy, a Maori. Identifiable.

Stolen between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on the 11th instant, from outside the shop of Joseph Fitzsimons, clothier, Queen Street, Auckland, a boy’s suit of Mosgiel grey-check tweed, size 8, five buttons in front of coat, new; value 14s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the 3rd instant’ from the shop-door of Herbert Short, draper, Queen Street, Auckland, a knitted fawn-coloured silk scarf, with heavyfringe ; value 15s. 6d. Supposed identifiable.

Between 3 p.m. on the 29th and 8 a.m. on the 30th ultimo, the store of Edward Phillips, Waiharekeke, near Waihi, Tauranga district, was broken into, and the following stolen : A brown blanket with yellow black and red stripes, two pairs white pants, a half-gallon billy, half a dozen pocket-knives, one dozen tins jam, lib. tea, a quantity of sugar and lollies, 21b. candles, one dozen boxes matches, three tins of coffee, a pair of scissors, two knives and forks, and two shirts ; value £3 2s. Gd. Blanket identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Rae, a native of Scotland or North of Ireland, a gumdigger, about fifty years of age, about sft. 4in. high, medium build, white beard whiskers and moustache, shuts one eye while speaking, stoops slightly; knocks about with Maoris ; generally dressed in white linen jacket, cord trousers, flannel shirt, and billycock hat; dirty appearance. He obtained credit from complainant to start gum-digging, but cleared out of the district at about above time. Is in the habit of victimising storekeepers.

Lost or stolen from the Empire Hotel, Willis Street, Wellington, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the 16th instant, a ladies’ gold open-faced keyless geneva watch, AD on outside of case, white dial, number and maker unknown, with: a very short albert chain of two plies, one imitation gold the other platinum, and small links attached ; value £5 ; the property of Miss Ada Dillon, whose next address will bei Star Hotel, Auckland. Identifiable.

Larceny from the dwelling of W. R. E. Brown, Tinakori Road, Wellington: The kettle has been found, and complainant now states he has no reason to believe that any of the property was stolen.

Weldon, Mcßride Street, South Dunedin, a ladies’ open-faced gold geneva watch, small size, blue enamel in centre of back, No. 50995, gold dial, a small brown mark or flaw on edge; and part of an old-fashioned English-made necklet With plain round links attached; value £5; the property of Miss Amy Weldon. The dress-material stolen from the shop of Joseph Waite, Colombo Street, Sydenham, has been recovered from the house of Paul Pearson, who, with his wife Elizabeth, were

arrested by Chief Detective M. O’Connor and Acting-Detec-tive R. Marsack, Christchurch Police. The male prisoner was acquitted, and the female committed for trial. She was also sentenced to one month’s labour on each of three charges of larceny.

Between the sth and 15th instant the sitting-room in the dwelling of Cecilia Jacobsen, Palmerston North, was broken into, and the following stolen : A carving-knife and -fork, bone handles, deer-foot shape, in case ; a plated fish-knife and -fork, in case ; a silver napkin-ring, engraved DH (or GH); a plated jam-spoon; and a dessert-knife and -fork in case : value £4 17s. 6d. Stolen between 8 p.m. and 5 p.m. on the 17th instant, from the dwelling of Alfred Theodore Childs, at Turnbull and Co.'s Station, Ohariu Valley, near Wellington, a silver geneva half-hunting watch, number unknown, with silver albert attached ; value £5. Watch identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man known as “ Sam,” who called at complainant’s house seeking employment, and afterwards went towards Wellington. Description : Supposed English, about eighteen years of age, sft. fin. high, slight build, dark hair and complexion, no hair on face ; dressed in dark-blue serge suit and blue-cloth cap with peak. Identifiable.

Between 11.30 p.m. on the 4th and 8 a.m. on the sth instant a patched pane of glass in the shop-window of Hood and Rice, Tainui Street, Greymoutli, was broken, and the following stolen: Four imitation-silver brooches, an inchtape, red, and small pin-cushion, both on ivory stands; two small bottles of scent, an electroplated napkin-ring with sunflowers engraved thereon, two small fancy cups and a saucer; value 16s. Stolen on the 17th instant, between 7 and 10 p.m., from a bedroom in the Imperial Hotel, Greymoutli, a brownstriped velveteen plain jacket-body, buttons up front, nearly new ; value 155.; the property of Jane Evans : also a blackvelveteen skirt, plain make, with marks where trimming has been taken off, half-worn, value £1; and a silver bracelet about fin. wide, gold-gilting in shape of diamond on top, marks of eye on each side of fastening where chain has been attached, value 10s.; the Eliza Purcell. All identifiable. Suspicion attached toVUargaret Taylor, about twenty years of age, very stout build, and dark complexion. She was formerly employed in the hotel, and is now in service with Mrs. Cooper, Herbert Street, Greymoutli, whose house was searched without effect.

Stolen on the 14th instant, from a whare at Puketotara, Kerikeri, Bay of Islands, a £1 note, number unknown, 14s. 3d. in silver; a pair of cloth trousers, brownish colour, with small dark faded stripe down legs, front-flap buttons from left side instead of right, waist lined with dungaree ; a pair of white-and-red-striped woollen drawers, and a whitecotton flannellette; value in all £3 9s. ; the property of William Hansen. Identifiable except money.

Stolen between 11 a.m. and 2.45 p.m. on the 17th instant* from a desk in the shop of John Edwards, College Road* Ponsonby, Auckland, a dark-yellow cash-box, 12in. by 7in., containing £53 in single notes, bank and numbers unknown; £5 to £lO in sovereigns and half-sovereigns, a ladies’ 15-carat gold watch-chain, small links, value £8; a ladies’ gold locket Edwards, and anchor on one side and heart on the other, value £1; a ladies’ goM open-faced watch, gold dial and hands, chased on back, glass broken, and works loose, value £3; an old fashioned double-cased silver watch, J.E. on outside case, value 10s. ; a jew'el-case, containing two ladies’ gold rings, ono set with a topaz and the other with six sapphires and six pearls, and a pair of circular-shaped gold earrings, value of case and contents £3 10s.; a broad silver bracelet, chased on outside, value 155.; and a plain gold cross, value 10s. Description: A New Zealand half-caste, a music-teacher, about twenty-six years of age, about sft. 4in. high, medium build, black hair and eyes ; dresses very well. Stolen between the Ist April last and 28th ultimo, from a whare on Ilangitoto Island, Auckland, an anvil, two iron handles belonging to a crane, a blacksmith’s hammer, pair of tongs, an iron sling-chain, sixteen sheets of galvanised iron about 10ft. long, and a portion of the wood frame of a whare ; value £l2; the property of Robert Liddle, Mount Eden Road, Auckland. Blacksmith’s tools identifiable.

Stolen on the Gbh or 7th instant, from an outhouse at the Ferry Hotel, Wairoa, Napier district, a side-saddle, halfworn, new piece on of! side of cantle, and new patch on quilted part of near flap, girth-straps pulled away and saddlestrap used instead; value £3; the property of Georgina Howell. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 26tli ultimo and Ist instant, from the dairy of Louis C. Pharazyn, Lowlands, Tauherenikau, Wellington District, 81b. bacon, a quarter of lamb, and a hairbroom ; also from complainant’s orchard a quantity of plums: total value 11s.

Suspicion attached to a spieler named “Paddy,” who left Wairoa on above date for Gisborne riding a bay horse barebacked, but on passing through Marumaru, it is said, had a saddle and bridle. He is described as a colonial, twenty to twenty-three years of age, clean-shaved except small moustache; dressed in lighttweed suit and hard black-felt hat. Can be identified.

Tukairangt Mohi/is charged, on warrant issued by the WlialcataneH3ench7 with having on the 7th January, 1890, broken into a stable at Puketari, Taupo, and stolen therefrom twenty sticks of tobacco, ten dozen boxes of matches, a pair of woollen trousers and waistcoat, a native mat of dressed flax covered with feathers, a red-and-white shawl, a black-and-white shawl, a red-and-white-spotted shirt, and a white-silk handkerchief with two coloured corners; value £ll 14s. Gd. ; the property of Ararna Karaka, of Atemuri. Identifiable except tobacco and matches. Offender is eighteen or nineteen years of age, sft. 7in. high, very fair for a Maori, and rather good looking. Supposed to be near Te Teko, Whakatane. •Z e. Description: Koson is a Russian Fin, a seaman or labourer, sft. 2in. or 3in. high, medium build, sallow complexion, pock-marked, very like a Chinaman ; dressed in old tweed coat, moleskin trousers, soft black-felt hat, and elasticside boots. McLellan is a native of Nova Scotia or Norway, a seaman, sft. 7in. high, medium build, fair complexion,

slight sandy moustache and side whiskers, shaved on chin; dressed in old dark coat and vest, blue-dungaree trousers, old black soft-felt hat, and blucher boots. Offenders had the use of the tent while working for complainants, and cleared out on the Bth instant, taking it with them. They went in the direction of Silverstream, and said they had a job with Mr. Thompson, sawmiller, there.

Stolen on the 4th instant, from Tinakori Road, Wellington, a black-and-tan sheep-dog pup, about six months old, short hair ; the property of Henry Hume. Identifiable.
