Missing Friends.

The Archduke Johann op Austria, alias Captain John Orth, left Monte Video on the 10th July last in command of the vessel “ San Margareta,” bound for Valparaiso, and has never since been heard of. It is requested that, in the event of any information being obtained regarding the commander, ship, or crew, it may at once be notified to the Commissioner of Police, for transmission to His Excellency the Governor. Inquiry is requested for Richard Jones, of St. Martin’s, near Cliiel, County Salop, a labourer, who sailed for Wellington about thirty years ago. His whereabouts is asked for by his brother, through the Commissioner of Police. (91/195.)

Joseph Rodda is inquired for with the view of compelling him to support his wife and children, who reside in Oamaru, and are in a destitute condition. He arrived in Lyttelton on the 13th December last by the s.s. “Janet Nicholl” from Westport, and has not been heard of since. For description, see Police Gazette, pages 134 and 237. (91/182.) Inquiry is requested for Henry Stephen Winter, English, a labourer, sixty years of age, sft. 7in. high, fresh complexion, grey hair, full beard whiskers and moustache; dressed in black-cloth trousers, grey paget-coat, and soft black-felt hat. He left Timaru about the 22nd October last with the intention of going into Christchurch Hospital, but has not reached there, and it is feared he may have died at some place where he is unknown, as he was in weak health. His daughter, Mrs. Francis Drake, of Temuka, is anxious to hear of him. He is known at Oamaru and Papakaio.

Information is requested concerning M. Matheson, supposed English, a labourer and shearer, twenty-eight to thirty years of age, about sft. 9in. high, medium build, cleanshaved except light-brown moustache ; dressed in dark-tweed suit and hard black-felt hat. Inquiry is made by Mr. William Henry Wynn-Williams, barrister and solicitor, Christchurch, with whom, on the 10th November last, he left a cheque to be cashed ; he then gave his address as “ Care of McArthur, Esq., St. Albans Station, Amuri; ” but not having reached there it is feared some accident may have befallen him. He previously worked on the Benmore Station, Omarama, near Oamaru.

Inquiry is requested for Charles Smith with the view of compelling him to support his illegitimate child by Lizzie Barclay, of Huntly, Waikato. Description : A native of England, hut came to the colony when very young, a coalminer, about twenty-five years of age, about sft. 9in. high, medium build, very dark complexion, no whiskers, dark hair and moustache, rather long features, very prominent burnmarks on right side of neck. Inquiry is requested for Ralph Howarth, who disappeared from the Lake Pukaki Hotel, Oamaru District, on the 2nd instant, at about 10 p.m. Description : A native of Liverpool, England, a chemist, but recently a station-hand, about forty-five years of age, about sfc. Bin. high, medium build, fair hair, pale complexion, red whiskers beard and moustache ; usually dressed in old grey-tweed suit and soft light-coloured-felt hat. Was suffering from delirium tremens at the time, and it is feared he may have been drowned. Is well known to Mr. Stevenson, of the/Henley Estate, near Dunedin, and formerly of BraenW Station, Mackenzie rinnnf.v Ki

John E. Mitten, formerly of the 45th Regiment, who left the service with the intention of proceeding to New Zealand, is inquired for by his brother Thomas, who writes from Victoria, British Columbia. He is said to be attached to the Armed Constabulary, but the name does not appear in the books. (93 /230.)

Further inquiry is requested for David Hogan, formerly of the New Zealand Police Force, who was discharged at Blenheim on the 19th September, 1883. Description : A native of the colony, a labourer, about thirty-nine years of age, sft. lOin. high, medium build, dark-brown hair, brown beard whiskers and moustache. (See Police Gazette, 1885, pages 141 and 178.) Is said to have been shearing this season between Napier and Gisborne. The Public Trustee wishes to communicate with him respecting some property he appears to be entitled to. (91/248.)

Inquiry is requested for William Henry Clegg, also known as Clague, or Douglas, a native of the Isle of Man, a baker or station-cook, forty-eight years of age, sft. Gin. high (for further description see Police Gazette, 1884, page 154). On the 2nd December last ho was fined £2, and £l 3s. 6d. expenses, at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Timaru, and allowed one month to pay the same. Having failed to do so, his whereabouts is requested with a view of serving a notice on him.
