Horse- and Cattle-Stealing.

Stolen between 7.30 p.m. on the 3rd and 1 a.m. on the 4th instant, from the stable of the Terminus Hotel, Helensville, a grey horse, had on saddle with pigskin seat, old lining, three nearly-new girth-straps on off side and two on near side, round three-bar plated stirrup-irons becoming rusty, a double-rein bridle much worn, one of the reinbuckles cracked and the other rein broken at off side near the buckle and a hole punched in it, repaired in several places; the property of Joseph A. Simcock ; value £6 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Luke O’Brien, alias Larry O’Brien, Irish, a labourer, forty-four years of age, sft. high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, large mouth and nose, dark-brown hair, black beard whiskers and moustache turning grey, right hand amputated from about the wrist; dressed in black coat, light-coloured-tweed trousers, and black hat. The horse was subsequently found on the farm of Thomas Weare, Kumeu, twelve miles from Helensville, but the saddle and bridle are still missing.

Stolen about the 15th July last, from the paddock of C. W. Davis, Ruatangata Road, near Kamo, Whangarei, a dark-brown or black gelding, aged, about 15 hands 2in., unbranded, an enlargement on near hind fetlock-joint, and suspensory ligament on off fore leg sprung; the property of James Main, and well known about the north of Auckland as the racehorse “ Dick value £ls. Supposed stolen between the 28th and 31st July last, from Longwood Bush, Southland, a black steer, white spot on forehead and belly, top of near ear cut off, branded MH conjoined in a circle on off rump, two years old; the property of Morgan Hayes ; value £3. Identifiable. It is considered probable that it may have fallen down an abandoned shaft in the locality, but the owner believes it was killed and the carcase stolen.
