Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Patrick Sullivan, charged on warrant, with stealing money from the person of Michael Sheehan, has been arrested by Constable Hugh Mulholland, Winton Police.

(See Police Gazette , 1889, pages 161, 172, 179, 185, and 194.) The warrant issued by the Wellington Bench for the arrest of a man known as Tom, for stealing money from the person of George Thompson, at Wellington, has been cancelled.

Stolen between 6 p.m. on the 26th and 4 p.m. on the 28th ultimo, from the dwelling of George Sample, Ghuznee Street, Wellington, a heart-shaped greenstone brooch with a narrow setting of gold vine-leaves, and a gold spray in centre with a white and greenish stone set in it; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, from the dwelling of Herbert Leman Dunkenfield Shuldham, Ngaroto, near Te Awamutu, a white-merino shirt with collar, a pocket on left side, blue faneywork round neck, top button supposed off, and second button sewn on with black thread, and a check-pattern tweed cap with j'ellow lining and peak; value 6s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Frederick Williams, who was staying in the house with complainant. Description : A carpenter by trade, about twenty-one years of age, about sft. 6in. high, active build, fair complexion and hair, slight fair moustache and side whiskers ; dressed in black-diagonal coat and vest, new brown-tweed trousers, and new elastic-side boots ; larrikin appearance. He is supposed to have gone to Auckland. It is said his mother lives in Great North Road, Auckland.

Stolen on the 24th ultimo, from the shop of Thomas Keesing, Rotorua, three gold scarf-pins (one oval with a small diamond in centre, one horseslioe-pattern, and one whip-pattern); value £3. Identifiable. Maoris suspected.

Breaking into and stealing from the shop of Arthur Barnett, Timaru: The saw and chisel have been recovered. This offence it is supposed was committed by boys.

On the 10th ultimo the dwelling of Walter Dumper, Hackett Street, Ponsonby, Auckland, was broken into, and about 9s. in silver stolen.

Stolen on the sth instant, from the shop-door of Henry Levy, Lambton Quay, Wellington, two pairs of Germansilver spurs, nearly new, black rollers, and new straps, value 45.; and a toy-wheelbarrow, about 26in. long by lOin. wide, value 2s. 6d. Identifiable.

The gold watch and chain, &c., the property of Stephen Parmenter, reported stolen from the Clarendon Hotel, Timaru, have been recovered. They were not stolen.

On the 30th ultimo the dwelling of John Milton, Opoho, North-east Valley, Dunedin, |was broken into, and a ladies’ colonial-gold diamond ring, value £3 10s., stolen. Identifiable.

Between the sth and 19th ultimo the whare of Bobert Marsh, Pohangina, Palmerston North, was broken into, and the following stolen : Seven sovereigns, ten half-sovereigns, £4 ss. 6d. in silver, a bridle branded EM, value 155.; anearlynew saddle with three-bar steel stirrup-irons, value £3 10s.; a pair of leather leggings, a slit in upper part of leg, value £1 55.; a spade, branded CM, value ss. 6d.; an axe branded EM, value ss. 6d.; and a cross-cut saw r , value 17s. Identifiable, except money and saw.

Stolen on the 7th instant, from the shop-door of Henry Whittaker, Manners Street, Wellington, a tweed vest, value 35., since recovered. A man who gave his name as Conway, which is supposed to be a fictitious name, sold the vest on the same day at Smart’s pawn-office, Manners Street. Description: Supposed English, about forty years of age, about sft. 7in. or Bin. high, medium build, dark hair beard whiskers and moustache ; wore dark paget-coat and vest, brown-tweed trousers, and hard black-felt hat. Identifiable.

Lost or stolen from the person of Henrietta Charlotte Gibson, on the sth instant, between Opawa and Christchurch, a ladies’ gold hunting keyless lever watch, No. maker J. Hislop, Dunedin, 30047 scratched on inside of case, a gold albert chain, and a small blue-enamelled locket, value £3O. Identifiable. ~

Stolen on the sth or 6th instant, from the dwelling of Owen Flanigan, at the Eangitikei Fibre Company’s Flax-mill, Turakina, an order dated the 2nd instant, No. 68, on the Eangitikei Fibre Company, Wellington, for the payment of £4 17s. 6d., drawn by John Gibbons in favour of Owen Flanigan. Identifiable.

Stolen on the sth instant, from a box in the dwelling of Alfred James, Foxton, six £1 notes.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the shop-door of William Sawkins, Victoria-street West, Auckland, two pairs of ladies’ black-morocco-leather lace-shoes, black heels, and black lining ; value 13s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the shop-door of the late Thomas Short, Queen Street, Auckland, six Kaiapoi-tweed boys’ knickerbocker suits, various patterns; value 17s. 6d. per suit; the property of the executors of Thomas Short. Identifiable bv tickets attached.

Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, from the shop-door of P. E. Hatch, Hobson Street, Auckland, about two dozen pairs of solitaires, made of brass and stained glass ; value Is. a pair.

Stolen on the 12th instant, from the dwelling of Elizabeth Landells, Cargill Street, Dunedin, a ladies’ brown-leather waist-belt, value 2s. lid.; a steel bracelet, value £1; a whitesilk handkerchief, value 2s. (“A. E. Landells” marked on bracelet and handkerchief); and a red-morocco purse, value 35., containing two sovereigns and 3s. or 4s. in silver. Identifiable, except money. Suspicion attached to Alice Clent, who was a servant in the house, and left on the 12th instant without giving notice, and soon after she left the property was missed. Description: A native of the colony, eighteen years of age, sft. 3in. high, medium build, fair hair and com-

plexion; wore white dress, long black jacket, and whitestraw hat. Her parents live at Waitati.

Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from the dwelling of Thomas Jackson, Upper Eiccarton, near Christchurch, a tweed pagetsuit, about half-worn, small black-and-brown-check pattern, an outside left-breast patch-pocket, imitation hip-pockets with flaps, two skirt-pockets, maker J. B. Johnstone, London and Dublin, “ T. W. Maude, Esqr.,” a number, and date on a piece of linen sewn on near tab, value £2 10s.; a pair of blucher boots, about half-worn, size 9, three sole-protectors on left boot and two on right, value 55.; and a large red handkerchief with white spots, value Is. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, supposed English, about forty years of age, about sft. 9in. or lOin. high, medium build, dark complexion, full round face, dark reddish beard whiskers and moustache ; wore dark clothes and hard round black hat. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 7th or Bth instant, from the tent of Bichard Marsh, Scrubby Terrace, Waikaia, a brace and three bits, a hand-saw, a hammer, a screw-wrench, a riding-whip, and two rabbit-traps ; value £2. Identifiable.
