Horse- and Cattle-Stealing.

(See Police Gazette, 1889, page 108.) The horse, the property 7 of Mary Ann Jones, supposed stolen from a paddock at Menzies Ferry, has been recovered; not stolen.

(See Police Gazette, 1889, pages 96 and 108.) Supposed stealing a mare at Wairoa, the property of Henry Melville Brown : The man, name unknown, who was seen riding a mare answering the description of the one stolon went in the direction of Taupo.

(See Police Gazette, 1889, page 96.) The mare supposed stolen from the yard of Robert Beattie, at Sydenham, has been recovered.

A man, name unknown, is charged, on warrant issued by the Timaru Bench, with the larceny as a bailee, on the 11th April last, at Timaru, of a chestnut hack-gelding, 15 hands high, about seven years old, supposed branded L on one shoulder, hog-mane, and long tail, known by the name of “ Red Robin,” and has been raced by Hobbs Brothers and Coulter, at Timaru, Ashburton, Christchurch, and Dunedin, value £ls; an English-made saddle, about half worn, “ Clissold” branded on flap, value £4 ; a double-rein bridle, value £1 ss. ; and a brown-mixture waterproof coat, value £1 ; the property of John Shaw. Identifiable. Description: Supposed English, about twenty-three years of age, sft. 7in. high, medium build, sallow complexion, light-brown hair side whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark-tweed suit and hard black-felt hat; smait active appearance. Identifiable. He hired the horse, &c., from Mr. Shaw on the lltli April last to go to Temuka, and was to return on the 14th April last, but he did not do so. A man answering the offender’s description, who gave his name as George Ross, sold the horse, saddle, and bridle, through Mr. H. Connell, auctioneer, at Oamaru, on the 13th April.

A man, name unknown, is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with stealing, on the 18th April last, from a paddock near Ralcaia, a dark-brown hack-gelding, seven years old, 15 hands high, branded A on near shoulder, near hind fetlock white, since recovered ; the property of Thomas Lamont. Description: Supposed a native of the colony, about twenty-one or twenty-two years of age, about sft. Bin. high, medium build, dark hair, small dark side whiskers and moustache; dressed in dark-tweed coat, greytweed trousers and vest, and hard black hat. Identification doubtful. He sold the horse at Christchurch on the 20tli April last, and when giving a receipt for the purchase-money signed his name James Spencer,

James Calvary is charged, on warrant issued, by the Featherston Bench, with the larceny as a bailee, on or about the Ist ultimo, at Masterton of a black mare, hack-breed, blaze on face, two or three fetlocks white, branded T on off shoulder, goes a little lame on one of fore feet, value £3 10s.; and an old saddle and bridle, value 10s. ; the property of John Beel. Identifiable. Description: A native of British Guiana, South America, of Spanish and negro extraction, copper complexion, a sailor and cook, forty-five years of age, sft. s Jin. high, medium build, black woolly hair, black eyes, scanty dark beard and moustache ; cross, compass, and MB tattooed on left forearm ; when last seen wore dark clothes ; can speak nearly every European language. He was seen in Masterton on the sth March last. He was employed as cook at Prosser’s Hotel, Porirua, in September last. Mr. Beel lent the offender the mare, saddle, and bridle at Featberston, on the Bth February last, to go to Masterton, on condition that he returned them on the following day, but he has not since done so.
