Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Breaking into the post office at Feilding, and stealing a

safe containing money, &c., the property of the Government: John Williams, alias Herbert Allendale, has been arrested for this offence by Chief Detective Lionel D. Benjamin, Wellington Police, and remanded to Palmerston North.

Breaking into the store of James Miller, Palmerston North, and stealing a safe containing cheques, &c.: The safe also contained a cheque for £ll 10s. on the Bank of New Zealand, Palmerston North, drawn by James Miller in favour of William Tarrant. On the evening of the Bth instant a man, name unknown, presented this cheque to Mr. Donkin, draper, Feilding, for the purpose of being cashed. Description : Between twenty-five and twenty-eight years of age, sft. lOin. or llin. high, no hair on face ; wore old dark overcoat and soft black-felt hat.

Between 10 p.m. on the 2.3 rd and 7 a.m. on the 24th ultimo the railway-station, Cambridge, the property of the Government, was broken into, and the ticket-safe in the office broken open, and eight passengers’ tickets stolen. The tickets have since been recovered ; they were found near the railway-station.

Supposed stolen on the 2nd or 3rd instant, from the person of John Kay, while drunk, in Wellington, a gold horseshoe pin, set with seven diamonds, value £l2 ; a white-cotton handkerchief with two or three black stitches in one comer, two £lO notes and a £5 note on the Bank of New' Zealand, and a dark-silk umbrella, brown handle with silver plate thereon for name and silver slide for ribs ; value £1 Is. Identifiable, except money.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from the shop-door of John Graham, Queen Street, Masterton, a double-barrel breechloading gun, top action, left barrel choke-bore ; maker, Kenrick, London ; value £6 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the shop-door of G. W. Smart, Manners Street, Wellington, a pair of dark-tweed trousers and a vest, check-pattern, size 6; and two pairs of dark-tweed trousers and vests, sizes not known ; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Between 5 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. on the 26th ultimo the store of John L. Brown, Colombo Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and about 10s. in silver and coppers, and about 21b. of nailrcd tobacco, stolen.

On the 19th ultimo the shop of J. D. Phillips, High Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and a black diagonal-cloth sac-coat, size 4, value £1 55., and a pair of tweed trousers, value 155., stolen. Identification doubtful. The pair of trousers have been recovered, found on the 26th ultimo at John Taylor’s second-hand shop, Armagh Street, by Detective Maurice O’Connor, where they were sold by a man, name unknown. Description : Supposed English, from forty to forty-five years of age, about sft. 9in. high, medium build, fair complexion, light-brown hair beard whiskers and moustache rather scraggy and inclined to be sandy; dressed in dark paget-coat and vest, dark-tweed trousers, and black slouched hat. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 3rd ultimo, from the bar-parlour of the Albion Hotel, Hobson Street, Auckland, a velvet table-cover, the property of Patrick Gleeson, value £2, since recovered. It was pledged at Levy’s pawn office, Victoria Street, on the day it was stolen, by a man who gave his name as Bussell. Description : English, about forty years of age, sft. 10in. or llin. high, medium build, dark beard whiskers and moustache ; dressed in black coat, light-tweed trousers, striped shirt, and dark or black soft-felt hat; respectable appearance. Identifiable.

Stealing a silver necklet and locket from the Central Hotel, Christchurch, the property of Jessie Mitchel Patten : Thomas Thompson, who was suspected of the offence, but whose correct name is Edward Thompson, has been arrested by Constable John Hayes, Tapanui Police, and sentenced to two months’ probation.

Stolen between the Ist of February last and the 21st ultimo, from the hut of Ah Gee, Bell Hill, Westland, a swag containing a calico bed-curtain, a pair of red blankets, and sundry articles of clothing; cooking utensils and mining tools ; value about £ll. Blankets and bed-curtain identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th ultimo, from the shop-door of Frederick Bennett, Queen Street, Auckland, a spindle of dark-grey woollen yarn; value £1 ss. Two men, names unknown, were seen stealing the yarn. Description: First, is about twenty

years of age, sft. Sin. high, medium build; dressed in darkclothes and soft blaclc-felt hat. Second, about twenty-two years of age, sft. 4in. high, medium build; dressed in dark coat, grey trousers, and soft black-felt hat.

Between 5 p.m. on the 27th and 10 a.m. on the 28th ultimo the office of Elias Pasco, Epsom Boad, Auckland, was broken into, and a pair of old grey-tweed trousers with a patch of dark grey tweed on knees, a pair of old lace-up boots with tips on heels, half of one of the tips broken off, and a white-swansdown cricketing-hat, stolen ; value Bs. 9d. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Thomas Floyd, described in Police Gazette, 1887, pages 107, 200, and 255. He was recently sentenced to six months’ labour for larceny, and is awaiting trial on other charges of larceny.

Between 9 p.m. on the 29tli and 8 a.m. on the 30th ultimo the shop of Charles Baloke, Te Aroha, was broken into, and the following stolen: A gold brooch and earrings set with greenstone, value £3 Gs.; a gold brooch and earrings set with rubies, value £2 os. ; three silver bracelets, value Bs. 6d. each ; a gold bracelet, round pattern, with a small gold chain attached, value £1 Bs.; two silver bracelets, value 12s. each ; a ladies’ silver lever hunting-watch, maker Ehrhardt, number not known, value £4; a ladies’ silver Geneva hunting-watch, maker’s name and number not known, value £2 10s. ; three pairs of gold earrings, value 125., 165., and £1 Is. respectively; two wedding-rings, value £1 each ; a gold keeper, value £1 55.; a small gold locket with “ Love ” engraved on one side, value 155.; a small silver locket with MJ in monogram on one side, value 65.; a silver locket with “Bachel” engraved on one side, value 10s.; and about £1 in silver. Identifiable, except money.

Stolen on the 27tli ultimo, from the dwelling of Dr. Walter Thomas, Colombo Street, Christchurch, a marooncoloured table-cover with gold and green embroidery, much soiled ; value 10s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from the Criterion Hotel, Hastings Street, Napier, a black-canvas portmanteau, about 2Jft. long and about Ift. deep, FLG in white letters on side, containing a nearly-new pair of watertight boots, size 9 ; a tweed suit, check-pattern, much worn; two white-flannel shirts, a white-flannel singlet, a white-linen shirt, a pair of new white - merino drawers, the shirts and singlets are marked “ F. L. G.” or “ F. L. Gordon ” on breast, and the drawers are similarly marked on the waist; two plain white handkerchiefs, three white handkerchiefs with spotted borders, all marked “ F. L. Gordon ” in ink at corner ; and a pair of patent-leather shoes, size 8 ; the property of Frank Lindsay Gordon ; value £7 16s. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 15th or 16th ultimo, from off the diningtable in the Pacific Hotel, Thames, six silver-plated tablespoons, EP/A/PN on the back of the handles of four of them, and EP on the back of the handles of the other two ; the property of William Bylance ; value £1 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the shop-door of David Lawlor, Cuba Street, Wellington, two black-morocco purses, one of them marked T_j/Y I/O on the inside, and a plush tobacco-pouch ; value 13s. 6d. Marked purse identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the store-door of Arthur McDonald and Co., Crawford Street, Dunedin, a bag of rabbitskins, the bag is branded H ; value £3. Bag identifiable.

Stolen on the 12th instant, from the shop of Wingate and Burns, Woodville, a single-barrel breech-loading central-fire gun, makers Brown and Douglas, London, on top of the barrel near the lock, value £5 10s.; and two round electrosilver butter-dishes, metal bottoms, standing on four metal legs with projecting solid-metal hands, two supports on one side for butter-knife, cut-glass dishes inside with hell-shaped metal-covers, one smooth and one chased, “.Reed and Barton” stamped on bottoms ; value £1 7s. 6d. each.
