Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Alfred Lovejoy is charged, on warrant issued by the Masterton Bench, with stealing, on the Bth ultimo, from the whare of William Mulroy, at Taueru, near Masterton, a single-barrel breech-loading fowling-piece; value £3. Identifiable. Description : English, a labourer, aboxxt fortyfive years of age, sft. sin. or 6in. high, medium build, pale complexion, thin features, dark-brown hair, light-brown side whiskers and moustache, chin shaved; when last seen wore light-coloured tweed coat and vest, light-coloured striped cord trousers, and black soft-felt hat. He is supposed to have come to Wellington.

Benge Downs is charged, on warrant issued by the Foxton Bench, with stealing, on the Bth ultimo, from the whare of John Johnson, at Moutoa, near Foxton, an open-face metal watch, value £l, since recovered. Description : A halfcaste Maori, about fifteen years of age, about sft. high, medium build ; wore brown cardigan jacket, brown-moleskin trousers, tweed hat, and heavy lace-up boots ; speaks good English. He sold the watch on the Bth ultimo at Shannon to Daniel Harley, a clerk in the employment of the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company. He was employed at Birchley and Co.’s flax-mill, Moutoa, when he stole the watch.

George W. Boilean, charged on warrant with stealing dyes, scents, &c„ from the shop of Ralph Thomas and Co., Melbourne, has been arrested by the Port Melbourne Police. He is identical with George W. Boilean, described in Police Gazette, 1889, page 27, charged on warrant with embezzling money at Sydney, the property of Messrs. Lyons and McEwen.

Stolen between 2 p.m. on the 12th and 11 a.m. on the 14th instant, from the hotel of John Larkin, Patea, a green Scotch tweed overcoat with small red specks through material, lining of skirt torn as if from a nail, a dark-and-white-mixture dress tweed coat with red thread through material, “ James Smith, Te Aro House,” on tab, and a gold ring with black stone with initials “ Ever thine ” on inside ; value £6. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Henry Drummond, who had been staying in the hotel. Description : A swagman, about twenty-eight years of age, sft. Bin. high, ruddy complexion, light hair and small side whiskers and moustache; wore dirty liglit-tweed coat and trousers, and cross-bar cap with two peaks. He is supposed to have gone North. A horse and saddle, described in this issue as stolen from Patea, may have been taken by him.

The rifle stolen from the shop of William Garrard, Victoria Street, Christchurch, has been recovered, and William Cobbledick, a youth, arrested for the offence by Detective Maurice O’Connor, and sentenced to six strokes with a rod.

Stolen on the 6th and lltli instant, from the City Hotel, Dunedin, two light-drab overcoats, a little worn, brown silesia lining, four outside pockets; the property of Donald Reid, jun., and Thomas Grose; value £1 15s. each. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from the dwelling of Richard E. Dowling, Charleston, five small shirt-studs, with emeralds set in gold, plain heads, no chasing, value £4 10s.; a scarfpin, battle-axe pattern, small size, gold handle, platinum head, handle lying across a piece of gold representing a block of wood, value £2 10s.; a metal scarf-pin (supposed brass), Shakesperian head ; a steel net-work purse containing a Queen Anne halfpenny, somewhat bent, an old penny, a George 11. half-crown, and a few other small silver coins. Jewellery, purse, and half-crown identifiable.

Stolen between the 21st and 28tli ultimo, from a dwelling at Tuturau, Southland District, two £1 notes ; the property of William Carter.

Stolen between 6 p.m. on the 27tli and 8 a.m. on the 28th ultimo, from the bar of the Manukau Hotel, Onehunga, a pair of binocular glasses for use by day or night, one glass on the sight-end is cracked across the centre, and there is an indentation in the rim encircling this glass ; the property of William Adolphus Waterman ; value £5. Identifiable.

Between the 21st and 25th ultimo the store of Edwin Sarah, Beacon Point, ICaipara Heads, Bay of Islands District, was broken into, and about 13cwt. of partly-scraped kauri gum stolen ; value £lB. Some of it supposed identifiable.

About 11 p.m. on the 27th ultimo Ah Hee was assaulted and robbed in Cuba Street, Wellington, of a silver Waltham hunting-watch, No. 2144455, value £4 10s., by Thomas Bennett, alias Connor, and a man, name unknown. Bennett, alias Connor, has been arrested by Detective William Campbell, Wellington Police, and committed for trial. The man, name unknown, is supposed to be English, about thirty-five years of age, sft. Bin. high ; wore dark clothes and soft blackfelt hat. Supposed identifiable. The watch has not been recovered.

Stolen on the 7th instant, from the dwelling of John Owens, Beach Road, Ponsonby, a dark-brown plush bag, about Bin. by 6in., handle of same material, value 10s., containing three £1 notes, a cheque-book on the Colonial Bank, Auckland, value 2s. 6d., and several receipts and papers. Identifiable except the money.

Breaking into the post office at Feilding, and stealing a safe containing money, &c., the property of the Government: The safe also contained a registered letter, in which were two £1 notes. The letter was posted at Feilding on the 29th ultimo by Henry Sopp, of Oroua, and was addressed to D. C. Tennant, Marton.

Between 11 p.m. on the 28th and 7 a.m. on the 29th ultimo the store and dwelling of Robert J. McMillan, Foxton, was broken into, and three new light-blue woollen shirts, value 165., and 7s. in cash stolen. Sturts identifiable.

Stolen on the 11th instant, from the shop of George Bradley, Adelaide Road, Wellington, a cash-box", about 9in. by 4in., containing Bs. in silver. Cash-box identifiable.

Between 11.15 p.m. on the 4th and 8 a.m. on the sth instant the temporary hotel-bar of William Thurlow, St. Bathan’s, was broken into, and a few bottles of spirits supposed stolen.

Stolen on the 2nd or 3rd instant, from a hut at Avenal, near Invercargill, two £1 notes, 10s. in silver, and an imita-tion-gold chain, long-link pattern, value 35.; the property of Daniel Coakloy ; chain identifiable. Also two £1 notes, the property of Samuel Shaw.

(See Police Gazette, 1889, page 74.) The two suits of boys’ knickerbockers reported stolen from the shop-door of John Hannan, Victoria Street, Auckland, have been recovered ; they were not stolen.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from the person of James Irvin, while drunk, in Auckland, a silver open-faced English lever watch, maker’s name and number not known, hour-hand broken and filed to a point; attached was a silver albert chain, curb-pattern, with two silver horse-shoes pendant; value £2 ss. Identifiable.

On the 4th instant the dwelling of Joseph Redshaw, Avondale, Auckland District, was broken into, and the following stolen : A small gold open-faced Geneva watch, maker’s name and number not known, and a long gold watch-chain, smalllink pattern, value £5 ; a gold earring, flower-pattern, set with a small ruby, value 10s.; two small gold lockets, one oval and the other heart-pattern, value 12s. ; two gold watchkeys, a white stone in the centre of one and a Scotch pebble in the centre of the other, value 12s. ; a gold locket and chain, value £1 45.; a gold brooch, value £1 45.; and a pair of gold earrings, value £1 4s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Alexander Stainly, who on the day the offence was committed sold the gold locket and chain, the gold brooch, and the pair of gold earrings to John Bunyan, pawnbroker, Grey Street. Description : About sixteen years of age, about sft. 3in. or 4in. high, slight build, thin face, no hair on face, feminine voice; dressed in grey-check tweed suit and soft black-felt hat. Identifiable.

Between 5 p.m. on the sth and 7.30 a.m. on the 6th instant the store of James Miller, Palmerston North, was broken into, and the following stolen : An iron safe, 24in. by 18in., containing a cheque for £23 on the Bank of Australasia, Palmerston North, drawn by A. S. Baker ; a cheque for £3 on the Bank of New Zealand, Palmerston North, drawn by D. Guthrie ; a cheque for £2 6s. 9d. on the Bank of New Zealand, Palmerston North, drawn by A. Mathieson; a cheque, the amount and drawer not known; ten post-dated cheques for £1 12s. 6d. each, drawn by Alexander McMinn on the Bank of Australasia, Palmerston North, in favour of numbers, and dated 7th, 22nd, and 27th May, Bth, 17th, and 27tli June, 9th, 16tli, and 23rd July, and Ist August, 1889, and numbered C/3 15820 to 15829 inclusive ; a £5 note, about seventeen £1 notes, a half-sovereign, about £4 in silver, a cash-book, a day-book, a ledger, a bill-book, and three Jib. tins of diamond-grained gunpowder. Cheques identifiable. The safe was found on the morning of the 6th instant about three hundred yards from the store, broken open, and contained only the books.

Between 9 p.m. on the 25th and 8 a.m. on the 26th ultimo the store of Thomas Taylor, Colombo Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and about 1,200 cigarettes, value £2 55., and 2s. in coppers stolen.

Burglariously entering the dwelling of David Burnside, of Woodside : John Thomas Watts has been arrested for this offence by Constable William Bulford, Raglan Police, remanded to Auckland, and committed for trial. The gun has been recovered.

Stolen on the 16th March last, from the whare of Samuel Gibson, Kaimamaku, Bay of Islands District, a hard blaclc-felt hat, a pair of scissors, a pair of woollen socks, 61b. of onions, 141 b. of potatoes, 141 b. of pork, and two sticks of tobacco ; value 15s.

Stolen between the 23rd and 28th ultimo, from a box in the dwelling of William Lee, Chancery Lane, Auckland, twelve £1 notes.

Stolen on the Bth or 9th instant, from the dwelling of Dr. Davey, Ponsonby Road, Auckland, a very large nearlynew dark-blue mackintosh coat, with flaps in front from shoulders coming down over pockets, looks like a cape in front, plain back, dark-bone buttons, one of the buttons has been recently sewn on with lighter-coloured thread than the others ; value £3. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 10th ultimo, from the shop of Thomas Firth, Grey Street, Auckland, a second-hand volume of “ Cooper’s Guide to Health; ” value 4s. Identifiable.
