Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

A man, name unknown, is charged with stealing, at 3 p.m. on the 10th instant, from the person of Edward Hall, while drunk, in Cuba Street, Wellington, five £1 notes. Description : Supposed English, about twenty-five years of age, sft. Bin. high, stout build, fair hair and complexion, clean-shaved except moustache; wore light-tweed coat and vest, dark trousers, and hard black-felt hat. Identifiable. He is supposed to be still in Wellington. He was seen stealing the money by Mr. Walter Haybittle, who is in the employment of Messrs. Littlejohn and Son, jewellers.

Stolen on the 14tli instant, from a bedroom in the City Restaurant, Lambton Quay, Wellington, a ladies’ ring set with four pearls and four rubies, two of the pearls are missing, and 4s. 9d.; the property of Letitia Healy. Ring identifiable. Suspicion attached to two men, names unknown. Description : First, about thirty years of age, sft. Sin. high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair, supposed cleanshaved, pockpitted; dressed in brown suit. Second, about twenty years of age, short stature, fair hair, and supposed very small fair moustache ; wore brown coat and whitemoleskin trousers. They are supposed to be still in Wellington.

Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from a till in the butcher’s shop of George Hume, Queen Street, Auckland, about £1 10s. in silver.

Stolen between the 28tli ultimo and the Ist instant, from a bedroom in the Masonic Hotel, Gisborne, an openface English silver lever watch, maker’s name and number not known, like LEC in monogram on back of case ; the property of Frederick Summaroell; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen about the Ist instant, from a bedroom in Mrs. Cates’s boardinghouse, Owen Street, Thames, a nearly-new pair of watertight boots, largo nails in soles, tips on heels and toe-plates, the right heel is turned outwards, and there is a small cut in the upper of the left boot near the little toe, no eyelet-rings in eyelet-holes, value £1 ; and a nearly-new white shirt, value Cs.; the property of William Taylor. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to three men, names unknown, who occupied the room from which the articles were stolen. Description : First, supposed a lialf-caste Kanaka, about twenty-eight years of age, sft. Sin. high, nose slightly hooked, no hair on face; second, supposed a native of Auckland, about twenty years of age, sft. 7in. high, dark complexion, black hair, no hair on face except small black moustache ; third, supposed a native of Auckland, about eighteen years of age, sft. 6in. high, fair complexion, red hair. They are supposed to be wearing the stolen articles, as they left an old pair of boots and some old shirts in the bedroom. They were seen near Paeroa on the Ist instant.

Stolen on the sth instant, from the Shamrock Hotel, Oamaru, a ladies’ open-face Virginian gold watch, no maker’s name, number not known, and a double albert guard of same material, pattern long links with three short ones between ; the property of Eleanora Presland; value £1 10s. Supposed identifiable.

Stolen on the sth instant, from the billiard-room of the Eketahuna Hotel, Eketahuna, three ivory billiard-balls, one white, one spot white, and one red ; the property of John Tuck ; value £3. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from the Club Hotel, Palmerston North, a cashbox containing six half-sovereigns, £ll in silver, 6s. in coppers, and sundry papers ; the property of Benjamin Blower. The cashbox was subsequently found on the same day in an outhouse adjoining the hotel premises, broken open, and all the money missing except Is. Bd.

Breaking into a house at Ivirikiri, and stealing money, &c., the property of Kapiana: James Roycroft and Thomas Danzey were arrested by the Thames Police for this offence, but were discharged for want of sufficient evidence.

Between the Ist and 28th ultimo the vvhare of Charles Casseboom, Hunterville, was broken into, and a silver albert chain, long-link pattern, small knobs of silver on links at centre, a piece of bone about fin. long, the shape of an axe, with a piece of a shell in the shape of a slasher let into the handle, attached, and a white shirt, stolen; value £2 7s.

Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Jack Gallagher, charged on warrant with stealing a cheque for £4O at Hunterville. (For his description, &c., sec Police Gazette , 1888, pages 218 and 229 ; also this issue.) Ho is supposed to have gone to the Middle Island.

Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of John Hunt, Upper Riccarton : Recommittal for trial of John Murray (Hone Mare), alias Pekamu Apurona, for this offence : For escaping from “Adelaide Gaol” read “Addington Gaol.”

Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from a tent a Loweliff, Hinds, Christchurch District, a grey-tweed frock-coat, a dark-grey tweed vest, a pair new moleskin trousers, a new flannel undershirt, an old pair light boots, a blue-and-white-silk handkerchief, a pocket-handkerchief with black edges, and a brown muffler with blue dots ; the property of Edward Benbow ; value £2 9s. Identifiable except trousers and undershirt.

Between 9 p.m. on the 27th and 8.40 a.m. on the 28th ultimo the store of Michael M. Wyatt, Colombo Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and the following stolen : About 2s. in coppers, five lib. packages of tea marked “ 2s. 4d., M. M. Wyatt,” value 11s. Bd.; and three bottles of mixed pickles, value 2s.

Stolen between the 6th and 10th ultimo, from the dwelling of Sophia Fowler, Ciyde, Otago, a £1 note and about 13s. in silver.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the dwelling of William Holt, Clyde, Otago, 7s. in silver.

Between 7 p.m. and midnight on the 24th ultimo the hut of Yung Gee, Main Gully, near Naseb} r , was broken into, and the following stolen : A box containing five shirts, a pair trousers, a single-chambered revolver, a six-chambered revolver, value £4; and a tin box containing opium, value about £3. On the following morning the box was found broken open about 200 yards from the hut, and the sixchambered revolver and the box of opium missing from it. Identification doubtful.

The warrant issued by the Wellington Bench for the arrest of Joseph Wallace for stealing an overcoat, &c., from the Windsor Castle Boardinghouse, Willis Street, the property of James Mclntyre, has been cancelled, as the pawnbroker with whom he pawned the property failed to identify him.

Stolen on the 14th instant, from the shop-window of William Hunt, Cuba Street, Wellington, about 30 or 40 yards of black cashmere, about 3ft. Sin. wide, rolled on a piece of board supposed covered with green paper, with 2s. 6d. marked thereon; value £4. Paper only identifiable by the figures.
