Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

William Brand is charged, on warrant issued by the Brisbane Bench, with stealing, on the 24th August last, from

the person of Sang Loong, at Bald Hills, a cheque for £3OB 14s. on the Bank of New South Wales, Brisbane. Description : A native of England, has been a sailor, thirty-six years of age, sft. Bin. high, stout build, dark complexion, darkbrown hair turning grey, dark-brown moustache and side whiskers, otherwise clean - shaved, mermaid tattooed on breast and other tattoo-marks on wrist and arms. The cheque was cashed on the day it was stolen. He is accompanied by complainant’s wife, an Englishwoman, about thirty-four years of age, sft. 3in. high, medium build, dark hair and complexion; her Christian name is Lizzie. Also accompanied by a half-caste Chinese girl, thirteen years of age. They are supposed to bo coming to this colony, where a brother of the woman’s is living.

Thf. man “Fred,” charged on warrant with stealing a watch and chain, and a pair of shoes, from the dwelling of William Nolan, Orari, has been arrested by Constable Patrick Casey, Ashburton Police, and remanded to Geraldine. The watch and chain were found in his possession. He gave the name of John Lewis.

Stolen on the 15th instant, from the dwelling of George Ford Hill, Takapuna Lake, Auckland District, a sovereign, a half-sovereign, £1 16s. lOd. in silver, a shilling in coppers, an oval - back morocco purse with red lining, steel clasp which is partly broken, value ss. ; and a silver button-hook with flat handle, FH scratched on handle, value ss. Purse and button-hook identifiable.

Stolen on the morning of the 3rd instant, from the Temperance Hotel, Dee Street, Invercargill, two pairs of nearly-new white double blankets with a broad black stripe between four violet stripes at each end, two 41b. loaves of bread, lib. butter, and 151 b. cheese ; the property of Alexander P. Inglis; value £3 ss. Blankets and cheese identifiable.

Stealing clothing, &c., from the dwelling of Harry Mcßae, Fairfield: Edward Forrester, who was suspected, has been arrested for the offence by Constable Patrick Casej% Ashburton Police, and remanded to Geraldine. He gave the name of John Lewis. The stolen shirt was found in his possession. He is identical with the man “ Fred,” referred to in the preceding paragraph.

Stolen on the Bth or 9th instant, from the dwelling of Richard Edward Vince, Bingham Street, off Ingestre Street, Wellington, a ladies’ gold Geneva hunting-watch, maker’s name and number not known, and a silver albert chain and locket; value £5. Identifiable. The chain and locket have been recovered ; they were found on the doorstep of complainant’s house on the morning of the 12th instant. Boys suspected.

Stolen between 10 p.m. on the 24th and 4.30 a.m. on the 25th ultimo, from the person of William Curry, while drunk, in Queen Street, Auckland, a gold hunting lever watch, maker, Rotherham, London, No. 38437, and a heavy gold albert chain, cable-pattern, links about £in. long, a large quartz pendant mounted with gold attached ; value £3O. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from the shop of Graves and Fleming, Manners Street, Wellington, an Italian black-cloth umbrella, dark-bone handle screwed into a cane stick, silver ferrule near handle, and a nickel-silver sliding ferrule to hold the ends of the ribs when the umbrella is closed ; the property of John F. Ward ; value 10s. 6d. Identifiable.

Between midnight on the 18th and noon on the 21st ultimo the dwelling of George Vesey Stewart, jun., Mount Stewart, Katikati, Tauranga District, was broken into, and the following stolen: A jack-plane and a plough-plane marked “ Matheson ” or “ Matheson and Sons,” a square with “ L. Claudet ” marked or carved on wooden side, a newlycured side of bacon with shoulder on, a piece of a shoulder of bacon with part of blade in it, eight or nine new white cotton singlets, marked “ Indian gauze ” or “ Superfine Indian gauze,” within a blue circle near bottom ; a blue-and-white-striped tennis jacket, about size 7, marked “ Hope Bros., Ludgate Hill, London,” about the collar ; a black-

satin scarf with small red spots, a silver fastener at back of neck ; a briar-root pipe, carved head and cherry-wood stem, about lOin. long ; and a white-handled razor with bottom part of case, part of the name “ Richardson ” on case. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Thomas McLean, John Mason, and John Lewis, of the schooner “ Opotiki.” Description : McLean is a master of the schooner, sft. 4in. high, stout build, black beard and moustache, cheeks shaved ; wears coarse blue jersey, blue suit, and blue-cloth cap with peak. Mason is an Irishman, mate of the schooner, sft. lOin. or llin. high, very slight build, long neck, sandy beard ; dressed somewhat similar to McLean. Lewis is a Frenchman, a cook, about sft. 6in. high, large brown moustache. McLean and Mason are married, and their wives live in Auckland.

Stolen on the 13th instant, from a bedroom in the Albion Hotel, Courtenay Place, Wellington, three white blankets ; the property of George Tabor; value £1 10s.

On the 9th ultimo the dwelling of James Fitze, Richmond Road, Ponsonby, was broken into, and the following stolen : A small wooden box containing 6d. in coppers, two loaves of bread, 31b. sugar, seven eggs, lib. currants, a small tin of rice, and a knuckle of ham ; value 6s. 6d. The box has since been recovered. Rice - tin identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, about sft. Bin. high, stout build.

Breaking into and stealing from the jeweller’s shop of Andrew Fraser, Hastings : The silver keyless Anglo-American watch, the ladies’ open-face silver watch (engraved case), the ladies’ silver open-face Geneva watch, the silver Waltham watch No. 2119862, the gold horse-shoe brooch with dog’s head, fourteen silver rings, thirteen silver scarf-pins, the silver and greenstone chain, three silver chains, six gold scarf-pins, ten ladies’ gold rings, the gold horse-shoe brooch (“ good luck ”), the gold brooch (daisy-pattern) four and a half pairs gold earrings, a silver necklet, three gold brooches, the silvermounted greenstone pendants, the unmounted greenstones, the greenstone mere, two sets of common studs, eight silverthimbles, ten silver brooches, three sets of sleeve-links, twenty-five silver studs, and nine gold studs have been recovered. They were found tied in a piece of an old handkerchief on the morning of the 12th instant in the yard of the police station, Taradale.

Between 4 and 9 p.m. on the 15th instant the dwelling of Thomas Augustine Flood, Karere, near Palmerston North, was broken into, and two well-coloured straight meerschaumpipes, one with knotted stem, stolen ; value £1 and £1 10s. respectively. Identifiable.

Breaking into the store of Henry Sexton, at the corner of Kent Terrace and Sussex Square, Wellington: There were also stolen at the same time a mosaic locket with a white bird with a small bunch of blue flowers in beak, mounted in gold, value £1 10s; a gold brooch set with an emerald, two leaves in front, opens upwards, exposing place for a photograph, value £1 ; a gentlemen’s small gold ring with raised filagree-work all round ; value £1; a pair of ivory earrings, a little Chinese carving thereon, pointed pendant, value 155.; and a polished stone locket mounted in brass, containing seven folding views of Brighton, value Is Identifiable.
