Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

(See Police Gazette, 1888, pages G2, 69, 70, 82, 90, 98, and 150.) The warrant issued by the Napier Bench for the arrest of Patrick Loughran for breaking into the warehouse of Robert Holt, at Napier, and stealing door-locks and -keys, &c., has been cancelled. Loughran has been committed for trial on five charges of breaking and entering, and on one charge of larceny, committed in the Taranaki District.

Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, from the hut of Timothy O’Neill, Granity Greek, near Westport, a silver lever huntingwatch, No. 19591, maker’s name not known; value £5. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 31st ultimo, from the dwelling of Charlotte Price, Chaucer Road, Napier, a ladies’ open-face silver lever watch, makers Stewart Dawson and Co., number not known, a small flaw in glass over the figures 12, a black-bead chain attached; value £2. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Willis, an Irishman, a labourer, thirty-five years of age, sft. 9£in. high, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair, light sandy beard whiskers and moustache, dirty appearance ; dressed in dirty brown-tweed suit and light softfelt hat. He lives in Paradise Road, Napier.

Stolen between the 28tli July last and the 27th ultimo, from the tent of Charles Roach, Kokiri, Westland District, two chamois bags, one inside the other; a gold ring, snakepattern, with about ten red diamonds as eyes, “ Melbourne ” stamped on inside, value £l2 ; a gold ring, anchor-pattern, gold rope attached to both flukes of anchor and about half way round the ring, was broken and repaired with gold of an inferior quality, “ Melbourne ” stamped on inside, value £3 ; a broken gold ring with an arch of white stone forming a seal and set with silver, value £1 10s.; a gold watch-key, about 2in. long, with a blood-stone in one side and a yellowish stone in the other side, value £3 ; a long silver watch-chain, value 55.; two silk handkerchiefs, value £1; two cambric handkerchiefs, value Is.; a pair of socks, value Is. ; and a split ring, value 3s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Frank Poff, Irish, a carter, about thirty-three years of age, sft. 7in. or Bin. high, medium build, dark complexion, darkbrown beard whiskers and moustache; usually wears darktweecl suit and hard black-felt hat. He lives at Richardson. (See Police Gazette, 1886, page 131.)

Between 1 p.m. on the 25th and 8 a.m. on the 27th ultimo the store of Messrs. Stephenson, Smith, and Co., Farish Street, Wellington, was broken into, and a 201 b. box of tea and a few gelatine lozenges stolen ; value £l.

Between 1 and 6 a.m. on the 25th ultimo the Star and Garter Hotel, Cuba Street, Wellington, was burglariously entered, and the following stolen : A bottle of port wine, a bottle of muscat wine, a bottle pf rum, a quantity of tobacco and cigarettes, £1 9s. in silver, and 10s. in coppers; the property of Henry Price.

Stolen between the 18th and 24th ultimo, from the shop of George Henry Clapliam, Plymouth Street, Wanganui, about 18J yards of No. 3 Fox’s blue diagonal serge, double width ; value £9. Identification doubtful.

Between 6.15 p.m. on the 29th and 8.30 a.m. on the 30th ultimo the store of Noble Campbell and Co., Lambton Quay, Wellington, was broken into, and the following stolen: A box of cigarettes, a box of quill pens, and an ivory ruler; value £1 10s. Ruler supposed identifiable.

Stolen on the 23rd or 24th ultimo, from a till in the butcher’s shop of William Hammington, Patea, about 12s. in silver and 3s. in coppers.

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from the shop-window of Martin J. Carey, Timaru, a pair of boys’ lace-up watertight boots, size 10, brass eyelets, iron toe- and heel-plates, six rows of American nails in each sole ; value Bs. 6d. Identifiable.

Between 6.15 and 10.30 p.m. on the 18th ultimo the dwelling of Edward Wilson, Shirley, near Christchurch, was broken into, and nine £1 notes, a sovereign, and a five-shil-ling piece stolen.

(See Police Gazette, 1888, page 158.) Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of David Grant, Iliia Road, near Opunake: It is now believed that this offence was committed by Joseph James Saddler, who was committed for trial on the 27th ultimo on a similar charge committed at New Plymouth.

(See Police Gazette, 1888, pages 135 and 142.) Breaking into and stealing money from the dwelling of Alexander Micheli, Warwick Road, Stratford: The stolen money has been recovered; it was found by complainant in his bed.

About 2 o’clock on the morning of the Ist instant the dwelling of Henry A. White, Upper Kaiwara, near Wellington, was burglariously entered, but nothing was stolen. The offender was heard striking matches in the house, when an alarm was given, but he made his escape without being seen.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from the shop-door of John Budge, Victoria Street, Auckland, a pair of boots; value about 10s. Identification doubtful.

Between 7.40 p.m. on the 16th and 6.10 a.m. on the 17th ultimo the railway-office at Ellerslie, near Auckland, the property of the Government, was broken into, and a safe, which was in the office, containing £6, stamps value £6 ISs., and railway-tickets, &c., stolen. The safe was subsequently found on the side of the road, about 100 yards from the office. An unsuccessful attempt had been made to break it open. A wheelbarrow, a spalling-hammer, and a long steel drill were found near the safe. The wheelbarrow is the property of John Andrews, blacksmith, Epsom, from whose premises it was taken ; the hammer and the drill are the property of two stonemasons who work at Ellerslie. Suspicion attached to Michael Kirby, alias Lynch. (For his description, &c., see Police Gazette, 1888, page 38.)

Stolen on the 13th ultimo, from the shop-door of William George Allan, Queen Street, Auckland, a steel trunk, 20in. long, 15in. wide and deep, painted dark-chocolate colour, bound at corners with steel plates painted black, iron handles painted black, six wire rivets inlaid, painted black, brass hasp ; value £1 ss. Gd.

Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of William Fisher Dixon, Orakau, near Kihikihi: Te Oti Rewi, arrested by Constable William Jones, Te Awamutu Police, has been sentenced to six months’ labour for stealing the clothing. The coat, trousers, and vest have been recovered. He was also sentenced to six months’ labour, cumulative, for false pretences.

Two women, names unknown, are charged with stealing, on the 9th ultimo, from the shop-door of William Strong, Karangahape Road, Auckland, two pairs of children’s boots and a pair of carpet slippers; value 10s. The slippers and one pair of the boots have been recovered. Description: First, about thirty-five years of age, about sft. 3in. high, medium build; wore a plaid shawl. Second, a half-caste Maori, about twenty-five years of age, about sft. 4in. high, slight build ; wore a dark ulster. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 9th ultimo, from the shop-door of Charles Nicholson, Karangahape Road, Auckland, a child’s ulster; value 7s. 6d. ; since recovered. The two women described in the preceding paragraph are also charged with this offence.

Stolen on the 9th ultimo, from the shop-door of Thomas Prosser, Karangahape Road, Auckland, a pair of carpet slippers ; value Bs.; since recovered. The two women referred to in the preceding paragraph are also charged with this offence.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from the shop of Thomas E. Carter, Victoria Street West, Auckland, a new five-string banjo ; value £1 Is. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 17th ultimo, from a dwelling at Woodbank Station, Kaikoura, Marlborough, a silver, hunting lever watch, maker Russell, Plymouth, value £7 ; a woollen shirt, value 10s.; a flannel shirt, value Bs.; a pair of flannel drawers, value 75.; a pair of socks, value 2s. 6d.; 21b tobacco, value 145.; a pair of scissors and case, value 6s. 6d ; a pocketknife, value 2s. 6d.; a dozen boxes matches, value 25.; and £2 in money; the property of Thomas Thompson. Identification doubtful.

On or about the Bth April last the dwelling of John Prior,

Paroa, near Russell, was broken into, and the following stolen: Two pickaxes, a backhand of a horse’s leading harness, a five-pronged fork, eleven calico sheets, twelve pillow-slips, a camp-oven, and a number of table-knives; value £4 ss. Backhand, picks, and fork identifiable.

On the 26th ultimo the dwelling of William Henrickson, Home Gully, near Naseby, was broken into, and the following stolen: A small colonial-gold oval brooch, a fly with a small blue stone in centre across the front, gold pin at back had been broken and repaired; a black-hair clothes-brush with dark wooden handle like a toilet-brush; a dark-coloured wooden watch-stand, about sin. high; and about threequarters of a bottle of Rimmel’s lavender-water; value £1 10s. Brooch identifiable.

Stealing a cash-box and money from the Queen’s Hotel, Wellington, the property of Mary Moynihan : The cash-box and £9 6s. 6d. of the money have been recovered, and traced to the possession of Allan John Gibson and Henry Luther, arrested by Detective W. L. Ghrystal, Wellington Police, and committed for trial. A number of documents that were in the cash-box have also been recovered.

Stolen about the 7th July last, from the-dwelling of Oswald Spottsworth Brodie, Masterton, an old French gold seal with white stone with padlock engraved thereon, also “La clef est a vous; ” value £l. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Charles Young, alias Peter Olsen, a native of the colony, a butcher, twenty-four years of age, sft. 7in. high, medium active build, fair [complexion, fair hair, cleanshaved except fair moustache. He is now working for the Wellington Meat Export Company, at Ngahauranga.
