Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

William Lesson Tipson and John McArthur are charged, on warrants issued by the Riverton Bench, with stealing, on or about the 31st ultimo, from the hut of Lawrence Ford, near Thornbury, Southland District, five £5 notes and four £1 notes on tbe Colonial Bank. Description: Tipson is English, a labourer, twenty-seven years of age, sft. 6in. high, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair and grey eyes, heart and arrow tattooed on right arm, man’s head, fuchsia, scroll, AMY, and clasped hands on left arm, AMY, heart, and hand on left hand, mark of cut on left eyebrow and on left wrist. (See Police Gazette, 1885, page 199 ; 1886, page 66; and 1887, page 179.) McArthur is a labourer and bushman, between twenty-two and twenty-five years of age, about sft. Bin. high, slight build, fair complexion, no hair on face except small moustache, right eye almost closed, very peculiar expression of countenance ; when last seen wore black sac-coat and light-tweed trousers and vest. They left Dunedin on the Bth instant, supposed for Oamaru.

A man, who gave his name as Smith, which is supposed to be a fictitious name, is charged with stealing, on the 11th instant, from the bar of the Terminus Hotel, South Belt, Christchurch, a swag, value £2 10s., since recovered; the property of Charles Wilson. Description: Supposed English, about twenty-eight years of age, about sft. Bin. or 9in. high, medium build, fair complexion, small fair moustache, and supposed beard and whiskers; said he was a printer; wore old light-tweed suit and old light-tweed hat. Identifiable. He pawned the swag for 4s. at Samuel Stewart’s pawn-office.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from a dwelling at Mount Roskill, Auckland, a gold open-faced watch, glass and hands broken, very much worn, maker’s name and number not known, value £8; a gold chain, snake-pattern, a gold key and a seal with dark-coloured stone attached, value £2 10s ; a ladies’ silver lever hunting-watch, maker’s name and number not known, value £5; and a ladies’ silver chain, small twisted-link pattern, with tassel attached ; the property of Thomas Hewittson. Identifiable. Also two small diamonds, a large uncut diamond, twelve large pearls, and three rubies, value about £l2 ; an oval Arabic silver seal, about 3in. long, ljin. wide, and Jin. thick, FR engraved at one end, and Arabic chasing at the other end and all round, value £6; an oval gold looket with roses engraved thereon, value 10s.; and a large piece of silver ore ; the property of Freeman Rogers. Identifiable.

A man, name unknown, is charged with breaking into and stealing, about 3.45 p.m. on the 6th instant, from the dwelling of Thomas Urquhart, Lake Street, Devonport, a ladies’ halfhunting gold watch, CMS in monogram on back of case, maker’s name and number not known, value £10; a silver chain, very small-link pattern, very small balls about 2in. apart along the chain, a watch-key, two whistles, a buttonhook, and two small American coins, value £3 10s.; a gold bracelet with a little figuring on back, value £3; a gold brooch, a stone in centre and a shamrock at each corner, pin across back, value £2; a £1 note, a few shillings in silver, and a few pence in coppers. Identifiable except money. Description of offender: About sft. 7in. or Bin. high, medium build, full beard mixed with grey; wore dark coat, much faded at back, rather long skirts, dark trousers, and brown soft-felt hat. There were also stolen at the same time a ladies’ gold hunting keyless watch, makers Stewart, Dawson, and Co., No. 101764, case chased, value £9; a black-bead albert chain, about 12in. long, value 25.; a gold bracelet with small buckle set with pearls, enamelled on back, value £2 10s.; the property of Christine McPherson. Identifiable.

Stolen between the end of October and the end of January last, from the Hospital, Wellington, a dark-blue cloth saccoat, body and sleeves lined with dark italian cloth, and lower part with black silk, two side pockets, and an outside

and an inside breast-pocket; the property of Andrea Angorio value £2 10s. Identifiable.

On the 4th instant the dwelling of Charles Spooner, Carlton Gore Road, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen: A gentlemen’s gold ring set with oval cornelian, value £1; a ladies’ Abyssinian gold albert, small-link pattern, two half-sovereigns, and about 10s. in silver. Ring identifiable.

On the 2nd instant the dwelling of William Robert Walker. Parnell, near Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen: A small cash-box containing twelve £1 notes, supposed on the Bank of New Zealand; a thin gold bracelet with model of a flower thereon in which had been set a piece of coral, value £5; a silver collarette, can be divided and made into two bracelets, value £3; and a ladies’gold watchchain, long-bar pattern with two or three small links between the bars, value £5. Identifiable except the money.

Between 7.30 p.m. on the Ist and 6 p.m. on the 4th instant the dwelling of Robert Ramsay Brown, Parnell, near Auckland, was broken into, and three £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand stolen.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from a cash-box in the shop of Sinclair Wright, Balclutha, lid. in coppers.

On the morning of the 15th instant an attempt was made to break into the baker’s shop of Alexander Kilgour and Son, Balclutha.

Stolen on the 4th instant, from the Makatoka Hotel, Makatoka, Hawke’s Bay, a 5-gallon demijohn, containing 5 gallons of pale brandy ; the property of Richard Essex; value £7 ss.

On the morning of the 4th instant the butcher’s shop of Enoch Wood, Mount Roskill, near Auckland, was broken into, and about 801 b. of beef and mutton, value £1 55., stolen. Nearly all the meat has since been recovered.

Breaking into the shop of Jemy Wong Lee, Taranaki Street, Wellington: John Collins, alias Dunkin, has been arrested for this offence by Detective William L. Chrystal, Wellington Police. The stolen property has not been recovered.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the dwelling of Anastasia Sinnott, Sydney Street, Caversham, a gold brooch, lfin. by ljin., leaf-pattern, three or four leaves, one leaf broken off, value £2 10s.; a brown-leather purse, value 6d. ; and Bs. in silver. Brooch and purse identifiable. Suspicion attached to Hugh Sweeney, Irish, a ploughman and labourer, about thirty-five years of age, sft. sin. high, medium build, brown hair beard whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark-tweed suit and lace-up boots. He is supposed to haye gone to Greytown or Outram.

Stolen on the 4th instant, in the Masonic Hotel, Napier, a silver lever hunting-watch, makers Rotherhams, London, No. 39452, a 15-carat gold albert guard with a small compass set in gold and greenstone attached ; the property of Theobald Lessong; value £l2. Identifiable.

On the sth instant a dwelling in Nugent Street, off Kyber Pass, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen: A dollar, a half-dollar, and a quarter-dollar, all in silver; the property of Eliza West. Also a small diamond, which had formerly been set in a ring ; the property of Annie Douglas. Identification of diamond doubtful.

Stolen between the 27th ultimo and the 10th instant, from the dwelling of Thomas Edwin Durance, Church Street, Devonport, Auckland, a gold earring, part of another gold earring, nearly oval, a fringe which had been along the edge of it cut off, leaving small holes, value £3 ; a large plain gold keeper-ring, “ Susan ” on outside, one of the letters, supposed S, worn off, “ Kohn ” stamped on inside, value £2 25.; a set of gold sleeve-links, made of coins (supposed five-franc pieces) connected by a gold link, value £1 10s.; and a pair of boys’ brown-cloth trousers, supposed size 4, bound with black braid and leather at bottoms, value £l. Identifiable.

Between 6 p.m. on the 3rd and 9 a.m. on the 4th instant the dwelling of Mrs. Whitson, Manukau Road, Newmarket, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen: A ladies’ gold hunting lever watch, case engraved, maker’s name and number not known, value £5; a ladies’ gold chain, links about ljin. long, connected by small round links, value £8 ; a silver pin, horse-shoe pattern, with stag’s head in centre, value 10s.; a gold ring with shield, “TW

from JW on marriage-day ” engraved on inside, value £8; four diamonds, a broken locket, some silver coins, and five or six bottles of brandy. Identifiable except brandy. The diamonds, broken locket, and silver coins have been recovered.

Stolen between the 12th and 18th instant, from a bedroom in the Empire Hotel, Oamaru, a 15-carat gold albert guard, long and short links alternately, large links about fin. long, “ Murray ” stamped on one link, and a small gold oval locket, a diamond embossed on one side, chased on the other side; the property of Robert Chambers; value £6. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 14th or 15th instant, from a bedroom in the Junction Hotel, Danevirke, a ladies’ open-faced silver watch, makers’ name and number not known, glass cracked, and a silver albert guard, threefold, with clasp in centre; the property of Margaret Fleming ; value £4 10s. Identifiable.

Between 11.30 p.m. on the 6th and 8.20 a.m. on the 7th instant, the dwelling of William Sullivan, Coromandel, was broken into, and the following stolen : About Bs. in silver, six eggs, and "a small billycan.

Between 6 and 9 p.m. on the 19th instant Ithe dwelling of Elizabeth Biggs, Hopper Street, Wellington, was broken into, and a £1 note and a half-sovereign stolen.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from the dwelling of Samuel Edwards, Mount Eden Road, Epsom, Auckland, a silver sovereign-purse, containing a sovereign, a small gold locket, oval pattern, LOVE in raised letters on front, plain back, one of glasses broken; two silver bracelets, about 2in. wide, two rabbits engraved on one, and zigzag engraving on the other; a silver locket, oval pattern, with raised gold leaves on front, no glass ; a pair of silver earrings, oval pattern, with a bird and flax-leaves engraved thereon; a ladies’gold chain, snake-pattern, clasp broken ; an old silver watch-case, and a brown-leather purse; value about £6. Identifiable except money.

Stolen on the 16th instant, from the person of John Hamilton, while drunk, at Lyttelton, a gold open-face lever watch, maker Edward Morrison, Cumberland Square, Parsonstown, Ireland, No. 63324 ; value £2O. Identifiable.

On the 10th instant the whare of Timothy Crowley and John Gordon, Riverhead, Auckland District, was broken into, and about 801 b. of gum, value £1 155., stolen. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on tte 4th instant, from the dwelling of Edward Russell Jones, Albert Street, Devonport, Auckland, twenty £1 notes, a half-sovereign, a large oval silver locket, chased all round, teeth-maiks on both sides, a small piece of silver in the form of a heart in centre, value £1; a silver chain, about 15in. long, like snake-pattern, value Bs.; and an old 9-carat gold engagement-ring with buckle, three blue stones set in centre, one of the stones is slightly chipped, value 12s. Identifiable except money. Suspicion attached to Gilbert Hill Broughton, complainant’s brother-in-law, who occupied the house with him. Description: A native of Christchurch, about twenty-nine years of age, sft. Bin. or 9in. high, stout build, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, cleanshaved except sandy moustache. He is a book agent for a Mr. McGlaslian, and travels the Thames and Te Aroha Districts.

On the morning of the 16th instant the dwelling of Ly Youn, Round Hill, Southland District, was broken into, and fifty £1 notes stolen.

On the 13th instant the dwelling of Frank Collins, Balcairn, Christchurch District, was broken into, and the following stolen : A Waterbury watch, a steel chain (long and short links alternately), a brass watch-key attached with a piece of wire, 101 b. bacon, and a small Maori kit, value £1; and 10s. in silver. Chain and Maori kit identifiable.

Between 11 p.m. on the 22nd and 5.30 a.m. on the 23rd instant the Karori Hotel, Tinakori Road, Wellington, was broken into, and two bottles of Hennessy’s brandy, a bottle of star brandy, four bottles of stout, and three bottles of beer, the property of Thomas Langdon, value £1 25., stolen.

Stolen on the 11th instant, from the bar of the Terminus Hotel, South Belt, Christchurch, a swag consisting of a blue single blanket, a red-and-black striped rug with a hole in centre, a Crimean shirt, a pair of dark-tweed trousers, a lightgrey tweed sac-coat, all much worn, five nearly-new oxford shirts, a large turkish towel, a sharpening-stone about Bin. long, a brown-leather pocketbook about sin. long by 3in.

wide, and two photographs; the property of William Guest; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 24th February, 1887, from the dwelling of Thomas Ransfield, Ohau, near Otaki, a silver lever huntingwatch, “London, Lever, Registered,” on works and dial, No. 53365, minute-hand missing, a dent in front case at edge; value £3 15s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Thomas Williams, alias Jones. (For his description, &c., see Police Gazette , 1887, page 253.) The watch was found in his possession when arrested on another charge at Palmerston North.

Stealing a gold ring, &c., from the Central Hotel, Wellington, the property of Harry Todd: The ring has been recovered. It was fouud in the possession of John Astley, alias Holmes, alias Jack Carling, arrested at Hawera by Constable George Amos Tapp for obtaining money at Wanganui by false pretences. He has been charged with the offence and remanded to Wellington.

Stolen on the 9th instant, from the dwelling of Emanuel James Lovett, Tram Stables, Ponsonby, Auckland, a ladies’ gold dress-ring, value 10s., since recovered; and an old wedding-ring, much worn, value ss. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Edward Prime, English, a remittanceman, forty years of age, sft. 9in. high, medium build, dark complexion, scar from scald on cheeks, long thin features, dark hair moustache and beard, ver3 r little whiskers. The ring recovered was pawned at Levy’s pawn-office, Victoria Street, by a man, name unknown, supposed a gumdigger, between forty and fifty years of age, sft. 7in. high, stout build, round full face, light-brown beard whiskers and moustache ; wore dirty grey-tweed suit; very dirty appearance.

Stolen on the 17th or 18tli instant, from the shop of Emanuel Newton, Karangahape Road, Auckland, about 2s. in coppers, 121 b. grapes, and about 121 b. of Pond’s seedling plums; value 18s.

Stolen on the 24th Februarjq 1887, from a dwelling at Ohau, near Otaki, a silver albert watch-guard, attached to which was a silver twisted card and a double silver compass with silver card round it through three loops ; the property of Netahio Tauche ; value £1 11s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Thomas Williams, alias Jones, in whose possession the stolen property was found when arrested on another charge at Palmerston North.
