Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Kew Hing, alias Ah Wah, alias Ah Wong, is charged, on warrant issued by the Dunedin Bench, with stealing, on the morning of the 10th December last, from the bar of the Rising Sun Hotel, Walker Street, Dunedin, twenty-one £1 notes, £5 13s. 3d. in silver, three bottles of cordials, two bottles of spirits, and a child’s dress; the property of Charles Robertson. Description : A Chinese, a hawker, forty-five years of age, sft. Gin. high, black hair, brown eyes, broad nose, and large mouth. The child’s dress has been recovered, and traced to his possession. Ho left Dunedin on the day the offence was committed, and it is supposed has gone up country. Ho was convicted of larceny, at Dunedin, on the 3rd December, 1885. Flora Somers, alias Mrs. Chancer, charged on warrant with stealing blue rep, &c., from the dwelling of William

Hessell Ward, has been arrested by Constable Thomas Leitch, Taradale Police, and committed for trial.

Joseph Dobson, alias Jackson, alias Hodson, alias Gravestock, alias Dobson, alias Capon, charged on warrant with stealing a watch from the person of Cornelius O’Leary, has been arrested by Detective William Campbell, Wellington Police, and remanded to Blenheim. The stolen watch has been recovered.

Stolen on the 10th or 11th ultimo, from the dwelling of Gilbert McFadyan, Wakamarumaru, Hawke’s Bay, a silver lever lnmting-watch, maker Stanford, London, the first figure of the number is 2, the other figures are not known, had the label of Mr. Lumsdcn, watchmaker, Invercargill, pasted inside of front case, value £8 10s.; a£l note, 2s. 4d. in silver, lib. of Juno tobacco, value 65.; and the cup of a pewter flask about 3in. by 2in. Watch identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th or 11th ultimo, from a storeroom at Wakamarumaru, Hawke’s Bay, about 251 b. of brown sugar; value 6s. ; the property of Robert Sim.

Between 10.30 p.m. on the 13th and 5 a.m. on the 14th ultimo the Pioneer Hotel, St. Ivilda, near Dunedin, was broken into, and the following stolen: Two bottles of Hennessy’s brandy, three pint and one half-pint flasks of brandy, three pint and five half-pint flasks of whiskey, “Rob Roy” brand, two bottles of old tom gin, two bottles of ale, twelve bottles of ginger-beer, six bottles of lemonade, a round white-metal clock about in diameter, and 2s. 3d.; value £4 3s. ; the property of James Donaldson Hutton. Clock identifiable.

Stolen on the 14th or 15th ultimo, from the person of John Dwyer, while drunk, at Darfield, Christchurch District, seven or eight £1 notes, a common pocket-knife, and a clay pipe.

Stolen on the 12th ultimo, from a dwelling at Hazeldean Road, Sydenham, a ladies’ open-faced gold lever watch, No. 6686, back chased, attached to which was a ladies’ long 9-carat gold chain, small close-link pattern ; the property of Elijah Brown; value £2O. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 18th ultimo, from a box in the dwelling of Florence Donoghoe, Upper Willis Street, Wellington, four £1 notes and a half-sovoreign.

Stolen on the 16th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Timaru boardinghouse, Willis Street, Wellington, a rug, about 7£ft. by sft., black-, red-, and yellow-check pattern; the property of William Smith ; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 11th ultimo, from the hut of Neil Culling, Kartigi, Oamaru District, two blue single blankets, partly worn, bound all round with maroon thread; value 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 13th ultimo, from the dwelling of Beatrice Jane Protheroe, Grafton Road, Auckland, a sovereign and se. in silver.

The clothing, &c., stolen from the dwelling of Timothy Hayes, Symonds Street, Auckland, have been recovered, and John Michael Knox arrested for the offence by Sergeant Andrew Clarke, Auckland Police, and sentenced to six months’ labour.

Between midnight and 3 a.m. on the 24th ultimo the dwelling of Alexander Coutts, Ingestro Street, Wellington, was burglariously entered, and the following stolen: A black common-leather purse with steel clasp, one inside pocket also with steep clasp, the fastener of which is broken or loose, value Is., containing a £1 note, two half-sove-reigns, threepence in coppers, one being a large old penny, and 17s. 9d. in silver, amongst which were four threepenny pieces with a hole in each. Purso identifiable.

Stolen on the 9th ultimo, from the dwelling of Bernard McGinn, Thames, a ladies’ gold ring with heart and FOR EVER engraved thereon, a small diamond in centre of heart; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 10th and 15th ultimo, from bedrooms in Watson’s Family Hotel, High Street, Dunedin, a gold ring with a pearl and three torquoises on each side, and a gold ring set with diamonds and garnets alternately, a diamond and a garnet missing; the property of Mrs. John Watson ; value £5. Identifiable. Also a gold bracelet, round band, with a horseshoe formed of pearls in centre,

and a silver bracelet with “ .Regard ” in raised gold letters thereon ; the property of Margaret McTamney; value about £4. Identifiable.

Supposed stolen on tbe lGth ultimo, from the person o Robert Keith, while drunk, at Timaru, thirteen £1 notes.

Stolen on the 4th ultimo, from the person of Joseph Sherwin, in his dwelling in Frederick Street, Dunedin, a silver lover hunting-watch, maker Cole, Hobart, No. 28516, a gold albert guard, curb - pattern, a gold locket with “ Presented to P.P.G.M. Sherwin ” engraved thereon, and a shell pendant, heart - and - cross -pattern, mounted with gold ; value £l2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 13th ultimo, from the dwelling of William Rae, Saddle Hill, near Dunedin, a round-faced wooden alarm-clock, two sticks of tobacco, and a box of paper collars ; value 12s. Clock identifiable. Three boys from Dunedin, who were selling children’s rocking-horses, suspected.

Stolen on the 18th ultimo, from the person of ITata Matua, while asleep in the Settlers’ Hotel, Waipawa, a silver Geneva hunting keyless watch, “ S. Kolin and Co., New Zealand,” on dial, No. 82849, value £l2 ; a gold albert chain, curb - pattern, small links, much worn, value £3; and a square piece of light-coloured greenstone, value 7s. fid. Identifiable.

Lost or stolen on the 25th ultimo, from the person of John Martin, at Tinker’s, Lake District, a silver lever watch, maker Ebrhardt, number not known, and an aluminum albert chain ; value £4 2s. fid. Identification doubtful.

On the morning of the 22nd ultimo the shop of Jemey Wong Lee, Taranaki Street, Wellington, was broken into, and the following stolen: About 251 b. of tobacco, supposed of five different brands, thirteen meerschaum cigaretteholders, some cigars and cigarettes, and two common silver rings; value £9. Cigarette-holders and rings supposed identifiable.

On the 22nd or 23rd ultimo the office of the Patent Slip Company, at the Patent Slip, near Wellington, was broken into, but nothing was stolen.

Between 6.30 p.m. on the 20th and 6.10 a.m. on the 21st ultimo the railway-station at Makarewa, Southland District, the property of the Government, was broken into, and the following stolen : 4s. fid. in silver, two door-keys, a padlockkey, an old black soft felt hat, and a letter addressed “ Mr. Matthew Spiers, Makarewa Junction, Otago, N.Z.” Keys, hat, and letter identifiable.

Stolen on the 14th or 15th ultimo, from the dwelling of David Blyth, No. 1 Line, Wanganui, a check-tweed overcoat, with side- and breast-pockets, and a blue sac-coat, both considerably worn ; value £1 ss. Identifiable.

Breaking into the whare of Edmund Smith, Kimberley Road: Daniel Herliilcy, a Burnham Industrial School boy, arrested by Constable William Hole, Coalgate Police, has been sentenced to one month’s labour for this offence. The watch has been recovered. The brooch was not stolen.

Stolen between the Bth and 13th ultimo, from the tent of Thomas Edwards Cox, Haupiri Road, Westland District, a dark-brown-leather pocketbook, containing a £5 note on the Bank of New South Wales, a twopenny stamp, a penny stamp, a memorandum-book, and sundry letters. Pocketbook identifiable. Suspicion attached to two swagmen, names unknown. Description: First, twenty-five years of age, sft. 7in. high, fair complexion and hair, short beard and whiskers, long features and nose; wore grey-tweed suit. Second, twenty-six years of age, sft. fiin. high, very broad features, dark hair, short beard and whiskers ; wore greytweed coat and white-moleskin trousers. They went towards Canterbury by way of Amuri Saddle.

Between the 19th December last and the 23rd ultimo the dwelling of James Leet, Waipoapoa, Carterton Subdistrict, was broken into, and the following stolen: A pocket-compass in mahogany case, about 2Jin. square and lin. thick, value 125.; a reading-glass, about in diameter, mounted in white metal, black wooden handle with a shade of white in it towards the end, value 3s. fid.; a thick strong readingglass, about lin. in diameter, unmounted, value 4s. fid. ; a silk pocket-handkerchief about 1 yard square, violet border about Sin. wide, white centre, value 10s. ; a small white-silk pocket-handkerchief, value 55.; and a very large old silk pocket-handkerchief, white ground with red spots,

darned, value 55.; the handkerchiefs have “J. Leet ” with date and year written or printed on a corner of each. Identifiable.
