Resignation. Constable Thomas Stephenson, No. 207. Rcioards. The sum of £3 has been awarded to Constable Charles Bowden, Lyell Police, in recognition of his services in connection with the prosecution of Thomas Kerr, of Matiri, Upper Buller, fined £lO and costs for sly grog-selling.
A record of merit has been noted in favour of Constable Michael Greene, Dunedin Police, in recognition of his courageous conduct in stopping a runaway horse, with buggy attached, occupied by Mrs. E. B. Cargill and Miss Cargill, in Princes Street, Dunedin, on the 18th ultimo, at considerable personal risk. Mrs. Cargill has also awarded Constable Greene the sum of £l, as a small acknowledgment of the gratitude of herself and daughter for his prompt and courageous assistance.
Justices of the Peace no Power under Sections 16 to 25, “ Industrial Schools Act, 1882.” It is hereby notified, for general information, that Justices have no power conferred upon them by sections 16 to 25 of “ The Industrial Schools Act, 1882 ; ” such powers are reserved exclusively for Judges or Resident Magistrates ; and any jurisdiction conferred by section 76 of the same Act relates solely to offences, payments, and orders, and will not justify the committal of children to schools by Justices.
