Deserting Wives and Families, &c.
(See Police Gazette , 1885, page 204, and 18S6, page 71.) Peter Snedden, charged on warrant of commitment to gaol for four days’ imprisonment, in default of paying £1 fine and 7s. costs for drunkenness, &c., has been arrested by Sergeant Henry Green, Balclutha Police. Fine and costs paid.
Edward John Ivey is charged, on warrant issued by the Timaru Bench, with deserting his wife and two children, at Otipua, near Timaru, since the 23rd November last. Description : A Cornishman, a labourer, twenty-six years of age, rather stout build (height not given), light hair, light-brown beard whiskers and moustache ; usually wears dark coat and vest and brown-moleskin trousers; fond of drink. His wife and children are now receiving charitable aid.
William Gill is charged on warrant of commitment to Wellington Gaol for one month’s labour, issued by the Temuka Bench, in default of paying £8 due for the maintenance of his wife and five children. Description : English, a contractor and labourer, thirty-four years of age, sft. 6£in. high, rather stout build, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, and full brown beard whiskers and moustache. (See Police Gazette, 1886, page 218.) He left Wellington, where he has resided for over a year, on the 21st ultimo, saying that he was going to Greytown, but no trace of him can be found there or anywhere in the Wellington District. He is accompanied by a woman, about thirty years of age, about sft. 7in. high, slight build, pale complexion, fair hair cut short, and two or three children.

John Driscoll, charged on warrant with disobeying an order to pay 15s. per week towards the support of his wife and children, has been arrested by Sergeant William Gilbert, Waimate Police, and remanded to Kaiapoi.

Hugh Blain Scott, charged on warrant with deserting his wife and children, has been arrested by Detective Martin Grace, Napier Police, and remanded to Wellington.

Thomas Woolford, charged on warrant with disobeying an order to pay 6s. per week towards the support of his illegitimate child, and £8 Bs. costs and expenses, has been arrested by Constable James J. IT. Pascoc, Duntroon Police.
