Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Patrick Cavanagh is charged with stealing, on the 26th ultimo, from the Waverley Hotel, Auckland, a waterproof overcoat (recovered by police); value £2 ss. Description: A native of County Sligo, Ireland, forty years of age, sft. Bin. high, stout build, ruddy complexion, brown whiskers and moustache, chin shaved; wore an old dark-tweed suit and soft black-felt hat; dirty slovenly appearance, fond of drink; a loafer.

Between 11 p.m. on the 11th and 9 a.m. on the 12th instant the dwelling of Thomas Hullett, corner of Armagh and Harman Streets, Linwood, Christchureh, was broken into, and the following stolen from his store, which is under the same roof: A wooden till, about 18in. long by Ift. wide by sJin. deep, with round wooden knob for drawing out till, containing four or five half-sovereigns and from £3 to £5 in silver and coppers, among which was a large number of sixpenny and threepenny pieces. The till and one of the threepenny pieces (which had a black mark like ink) can be identified.

On the 14th instant the dwelling of Thomas P. Wayte, Taratahi, Wairarapa, was broken into, and the following stolen therefrom: An ordinary size cash-box, containing mariners’ certificates, an insurance policy on complainant’s residence issued by the Standard Office, sundry papers, and a bunch of keys, including key of cash-box; value 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from the Royal Mail Hotel, Auckland, a black-alpaca jacket with red-silk handkerchief in pocket, a light-tweed overcoat, and a brown-waterproof overcoat; the property of William Gordon Bingham and Edward Codling ; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th or 11th instant, from the dwelling of William Henry Bramley, Karori Road, Wellington, a silverplated cigarette-case, about Sin. long, 2in. wide, and Jin. thick, with corners rounded off, containing six sovereigns, two half-sovereigns, and £3 in silver. Cigarette-case only identifiable.

Stolen on the night of the Bth instant, from the person of Andrew Turnbull, of Napier, while drunk on board the steamer “ Waihora,” during her voyage from Dunedin to Lyttelton, a £lO note, supposed Bank of Australasia, number supposed 01586, identification doubtful; and £4 in single notes, not identifiable.

Stolen on the 27th or 28th ultimo, from the dwelling of Arthur Furze, Tamahere, near Hamilton, two white-flannel undershirts, marked “ A. Furze ” on a piece of calico sewn on the neckband, a pair of black-and-grey and a pair of pepper-and-salt-coloured tweed trousers, very little worn ; a gold mourning-ring, “ In memoriam ” in black enamel on the outside and “ William Beach ” on the inside ; 21b. of cheese, two loaves of bread, a 21b. tin of preserved beef, and lib. of sugar; value £1 9s. Identifiable, except the eatables. Maoris suspected.

Stealing from a dwelling, at Kihikihi, a black-leather Gladstone bag, &c., the property of Alexander G. S. Black:

The Gladstone bag, cheque, photographs, and receipts have been traced to the possession of a Maori, named Whareaitu, who was arrested by Constable Edward Lovvther, Kihikihi Police, at Kihikihi, on the 4th instant, and sentenced to six months’ hard labour by the Te Awamutu Bench for this offence.

Stolen on the 2nd or 3rd instant, from the Provincial Hotel, Wanganui, a new black-alpaca sac-coat, large size, two outside patch pockets, “George Flyger” on hanger; the property of Martin O’Hara ; value £1 7s. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 23rd September and 23rd November last, from the dwelling of Sarah Cameron. Church Road, St. Albans, Christchurch, a quantity of ladies’ woollen fancywork, a blue-print dress, two infants’ robes with fancywork, a short dress with fancy-work, a short dress finely tucked, and several diaper pinafores ; value £3. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Mary Fisher, a domestic servant in the employ of Mr. Christie, of Ferry Road, Christchurch.

On the night of the 29th ultimo a store attached to the Crown Hotel, Geraldine, the property of Thomas Farrell, was broken into, and the following stolen therefrom: A number of pigs’ heads, hams, a quantity of bacon, and atent Bft. by 10ft. ; value £2 10s. The stolen property has since been found planted in a paddock belonging to Mr. W. Postletliwaite, of Geraldine.

On the night of the 11th instant the store of Sin Cum Hop, near Lawrence, was broken into, and the following stolen: A box containing about 201 b. tobacco, two tins of opium, and about £1 in silver; value £9 14s. Not identifiable.

Breaking and entering George John Cumming’s shop, &c. : Two pairs of the boots and the pair of slippers stolen from complainant’s shop on the night of the 23rd ultimo have been found at the back of the public school, Waimate.

Between 5.30 p.m. on the 22nd and 8 a.m. on the 23rd ultimo the shop of Frederick Smith, of Albert Street, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen therefrom: A pair of new Derby shoes, tongues lined with blue leather, one shoe slightly torn near the tongue, and a pair of elasticside boots with toe-caps ; value £1 4s. Identifiable.

Between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the 25th ultimo the dwelling of Joseph and John Crawford, Pairata, Pukekohe, was broken into, and the following stolen therefrom: A bluish tweed sac-coat with white spots, outside breast-pocket, a little worn; two white pocket-handkerchiefs, and a blackleather purse with semicircular rim, containing about 2s. in coppers; value £l. Coat and purse identifiable.

Stolen on the 21st or 22nd ultimo, from the dwelling of Catherine Loftus, Lome Street, Auckland, seven pinafores and three pairs of ladies’ drawers ; value ss. Identifiable.

The man, name unknown, charged with stealing, on the 10th November last, from the dwelling of Richard Wood, has been arrested by Detective Terence O’Brien, Omaru Police, and sentenced to six months’ labour by the Christchurch Bench for this offence. The shoes, trousers, grey-tweed coat, and hat were found in his possession when arrested. This offender is identical with Alfred Sulifant. (See Police Gazette, 1886, page 218.) Pie gave the name of Alexander Gascoyne when taken into custody.

On the 7th instant the dwelling of Henry Collie, Maori Bush, Tuturau, Southland, was broken into, and the following stolen therefrom : A ladies’ silk cape, a chemise trimmed with lace and embroidery, a nightdress with embroidery front, a ladies’ silver ring with cross on top, a brass scarfring set with pink stones, 101 b. sugar, a ladies’ fancy cane basket; value £4. Identifiable, except the sugar.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from the tent of Ernest Omeckey, at Danevirke, a blue sac-coat, a pair of trousers, and a vest of Mosgiel tweed ; value £5. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from the dwelling of Elizabeth Crammond, Sophia Street, Timaru, a japanned-wooden glovebox, containing a gold medal about the size of a florin, “Jessie Crammond” engraved on one side and “Timaru High School ” on the other, and a defaced silver medal about the size of a five-shilling piece ; value £3 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the night of the 15th instant, from the inside pocket of John Connell’s vest, while complainant slept with

the vest under his pillow, at the Family Hotel, Foxton, four £5 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, a £1 note, and 16s. in silver. Not identifiable.

On the sth instant the office of Messrs. Henderson and Macfarlane, of Auckland, was entered, the two bottom drawers of their safe forced open, and the following abstracted therefrom : Four £1 notes, a sovereign, 17s. 9d. in silver, a few coppers, twelve or thirteen half-dollar pieces, seven or eight silver dollars, a cheque on the National Bank for £237 10s., drawn by the firm in favour of Thomas Henderson on the sth November, 1885, with an account in red ink on the back showing how the amount (£237 10s.) had been disposed of. Cheque and dollars identifiable.

Stolen between the Ist and 12th instant, from a small box in the bedroom of James McQueen, George Street, Dunedin, a gold pendant consisting of two small nuggets and one large one joined together, weighing a little over loz.; value £4. Identifiable.

On the 10th instant the dwelling of William Jenkins, Kaikorai, Burnside, Dunedin, was broken into, and the following stolen therefrom : A ladies’ workbox containing two £1 notes, a ladies’ 15-carat gold ring set with greenstone, a pair of gold earrings, a pair of greenstone earrings mounted with gold, a gold albert chain, three small tin boxes containing £2, £1 55., and 6s. respectively in silver; value £l2 2s. Boxes and gold ring identifiable. The ladies’ workbox, gold albert chain, and earrings have since been found in a gully ..about half a mile from complainant’s house.
