Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Stolen on the 16th ultimo, from the person of Robert Scott, while drunk in the Studholme Junction Hotel, Studholme Junction, Canterbury District, an English silver lever hunting-watch, “ Adair” on dial-plate, No. 12422; value £B. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Ramsay and William Johnston, who were drinking with complainant. Description: Ramsay is a native of London, a labourer, between thirty and thirty-five years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, very stout build, dark complexion, black hair, short thick black beard whiskers and moustache; dressed in dark-tweed paget-coat and vest, light-grey striped moleskin trousers, black soft felt hat, and water-tight boots. Johnston is Scotch, a labourer, thirty years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair beard and moustache ; wore dark-tweed frock-coat and vest, light-plaid moleskin trousers, soft black-felt hat, and watertight boots.

Stolen on the 7th or Bth ultimo, from the person of George William Hutchison, while drunk, at Auckland, a diamond scarf-pin, star pattern, value £35; three £5 notes and four £1 notes on the Bank of Australasia, Nelson, and about £l6 in sovereigns, half-sovereigns, and silver. Pin identifiable.

Between the 3rd and stli ultimo the store of James Thomas Johns, Mount Albert, Auckland District, was broken into, and the following stolen : Light glass tumblers containing strawberry jam, two bottles of essence, a bottle of limejuice and glycerine, eight reels of black - cotton thread, a packet of needles, a small box of chocolate chestnuts, two cakes, a pair of scissors, two small black-and-white worsted table-mats, and a ladies’ navy-blue bodice; value £2. Bodice only identifiable.

Stolen on the 9th ultimo, from a till in the store of Robert Findlay, at Alexandra South, four or five £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, and 4s. or ss. in silver.

About midnight on the 17th ultimo, at Lyttelton, Jacob Semolen was assaulted and robbed of four £1 notes, a halfsovereign, and 6s. in silver, by three firemen belonging to the steamer “ Arawa.” He was drunk at the time, and can neither describe nor identify the offenders.

Between 6 p.m. on the 3rd and 3.30 p.m. on the 4th ultimo the store of Thomas Henry Glover, Rennal Street, Ponsonby, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen: 12 yards of pink check gingham, 3 yards of plain sateen, a black-cashmere cloak lined with white fur, a blackcashmere cloak lined with grey-and-white fur, a brown-fur cape lined with brown satin, an old black-cashmere dress trimmed with crape, a ladies’ grey waterproof with cape trimmed with black braid, a ladies’ drab ulster, a dark-green cloth dress trimmed with dark-green braid, worn; a dark french merino dress, worn ; a new bluish-grey dress trimmed with grey ribbon, a greyish-green dress trimmed with darkgrey ribbon and lace, a black-cloth ulster with feather-trim-ming on cape and sleeves, 30 yards of muslin, daisy pattern ; 13 yards of brown gingham, 15 yards of blue nuns’ veiling, 15 yards of dark-cotton dressing, five tablecloths marked “ L. Lloyd,” a dark counterpane, a pair of lace-up shoes, a pair of buttoned shoes, several pieces of ladies’ underclothing marked “E. A. Gardener” and ‘‘E. R. Gardener,” several white-linen shirts, flannel shirts, and merino under-shirts (men’s), a pair of grey-tweed trousers, a black single-breasted coat and vest, a new carving knife and fork, makers Batger and Co., Sheffield; the property of Emily Rose Gardener;

value £4O. Identifiable, except dress-material. Also a portmanteau containing men’s soiled underclothing, a plain snaffle-bridle, and a cheese about 301 b. weight; the property of Thomas Henry Glover; value £4. Identifiable, except cheese.

Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from the whare of Patrick Hyland, Wakanui, Canterbury District, a nearly-new greytweed sac-coat, size 7, three outside pockets; a nearly-new pair of brown-cloth trousers and vest, a piece of bacon, and a small piece of bread ; value £2 13s. Identification doubtful. A swagman suspected.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from the dwelling of William Oakley, Peeress Town, Timaru, a ladies’ silver half-hunting Geneva watch, No. 28433, a small round glass in centre of case, a long old-fashioned silver guard attached; value £3 10s. Identifiable.

Stealing from the office of Philip Stock, at Timaru: All the stolen property except the socks has been recovered, and traced to the possession of William Beckingham, who has been arrested by Detective Austin Kirby, Timaru Police.

On the 22nd or 23rd December last the warehouse of Messrs. Boylan and Tanfield, Queen Street, Auckland, was broken into, and a two-bladed white-handled pocket-knife stolen; value 2s. Identifiable.

Stolen between the Bth and 20th December last, from a box in the whare of Charles Matthews, near Alexandra, Auckland District, a £1 note on the Bank of New Zealand, £1 10s. in gold, and 2s. in silver.

Stolen on the 15th ultimo, from tho person of G. A. Adams, while drunk in the Somerset Hotel, Ashburton, an English silver lever hunting-watch, opens at back, makers believed to be Russell and Sons, Liverpool, No. 98232, “ Made expressly for T. R. Proctor, Christchurch and Hokitika,” engraved on back. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from the shop of James Rhodes, at Patea, a pair of men’s watertight boots, size 7£, with nails in soles and tips on heels ; value £l. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who was seen in the shop. Description: About thirty-five years of age, 5 feet sor 6 inches high, dark hair and whiskers; dressed in dirty grey clothes, white-moleskin trousers, and brownish hat.

Stolen on the 10th or 11th ultimo, from the Post Office, at Dipton, a letter containing a cheque for £6 6s. on the Colonial Bank, Invercargill, drawn by Richard English in favour of Lang Brothers or bearer; a cheque for £2 12s. on the Bank of New Zealand, Invercargill, drawn by James Dore in favour of William Clarke or bearer ; an invoice from Fleming and Gilkison, a receipt for signature by Fleming and Gilkison, and a half sheet of notepaper signed “W. Clarke.” The letter was posted at Dipton on the 10th ultimo by William Clarke, and was addressed to “ Messrs. Fleming and Gilkison, Flour Merchants, &c., Invercargill.” The cheques were abstracted and cashed, and the letter with the other enclosures reposted at Win ton on the 15th ultimo. The envelope does not bear the Dipton postmark.

Stolen on the 15th or 16th ultimo, from the Alexandra Hotel, Alexandra, Auckland District, a brown-leather bag with two clasps, a cheque-book, a requisition-book, a fieldbook, a diary, and a letter addressed to “ Lawrence Cussen, Surveyor;” the property of William Cussen; value £1 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Kerapa Tolia, Rangatira, a Maori, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches, stout build, dark moustache, very little beard or whiskers, good-looking. He was dismissed from the Constabulary in October last.

Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from a bedroom in Thomas’s boardinghouse, Customhouse Street, Wellington, a browntweed coat, a pair of very dark trousers, and a vest; the property of Zachariah Ashley; value £2. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to two sailors, who said they belonged to the steamer “lonic.” Description: First, about twenty-five years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, medium build, no hair on face; dressed in dark-tweed suit and dark-cloth tight-fitting cap. Second, about sixteen years of age, about 5 feet 2 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair; dressed in dark-cloth coat and vest, dirty moleskin trousers, and black-felt hat.

Stolen between the 18th and 26th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Tenui Hotel, Tenui, an English silver-lever hunting watch, no maker’s name thereon, number not known, AM over Tenui in circle on front case ; a silver chain,

rope pattern, with three band or knots thereon, a half-rupee and a six-cent piece attached; the property of Alexander Mulvay; value £5 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from the shop of Samuel Herringshaw, Pollen Street, Grahamstown, a ham, 91b. weight value 9s.

On the 18th or 19th ultimo the dwelling of William Whitehead, at Oruaiti, near Mongonui, was broken into and ransacked, and a gold wedding-ring, considerably worn, stolen. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 24th ultimo, from the shop of Richard J. Matthews, George Street, Dunedin, a concertina, maker’s name “ Lachenal and Co., London,” on a small label inside the perforated holes, “ Steel reed ” stamped on wooden part of handle ; value £3 10s. Identification doubtful.

William Peters, suspected of stealing a black-leather travelling-bag from the shop-door of Messrs. Mollison, Duthie, and Co., George Street, Dunedin, has been arrested by Detective Robert Bain, Dunedin Police, and sentenced to two months’ labour for the offence. The bag has been recovered.

Stolen on the 3rd ultimo, from the hut of Alexander Gillander, Anama Station, Canterbury District, a brown-and-white tartan-plaid jacket, value £2; a patent-leather belt, 3 inches wide, value 35.; and a common-leather purse, containing three £1 notes and Bs. 3d. in silver. Jacket and belt identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who was permitted by complainant to sleep in the hut on the previous night. Description: English, a labourer, about twenty-seven years of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, medium build, light-brown whiskers, small fair moustache ; dressed in blue-cloth coat, coloured-moleskin trousers, and tweed hat; smart appearance; carried a grey-blanket swag. He went south.

Between 5.30 p.m. on the 6th and 7.40 a.m. on the 7th ultimo the foundry of Thomas Atkinson, Tuam Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and an attempt made to break open a drawer of a safe which was in the office, and w r hich contained money. Stolen on the 25th or 26th ultimo, from a box in the dwelling of Charles Alexander, McLaggan Street, Dunedin, a small brown-leather purse, with three compartments, containing about 15s. in silver. Purse identifiable.

Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from a tent at Manawapou Camp, Manutahi, 6s. 6d. in silver, a ten-franc piece, and a Napoleon piece ; the property of Peter Burkhard.

A man, name unknown, is charged with breaking into the dwelling of Henry Faulkener, at Lincoln, on the 23rd ultimo, and stealing an old hunting silver Geneva watch, without glass, does not shut closely, number and maker’s name not known, a steel chain, long-link pattern, attached, value £3 ; a shilling, two sixpences, one having two holes in it, and a penny. Watch, chain, and sixpence with holes in it identifiable. Description : About 5 feet 8 inches high, stout build, dark complexion, supposed dark beard whiskers and moustache ; wore black or grey woollen jacket. Identification doubtful. He was found in the house by complainant’s children.

Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from the person of Patrick Rooney, while drunk, at Kumara, a nearly-new large silver lever Waltham hunting-watch, No. 4032, a steel chain, large and small links alternately, and a small silver locket; value £4 15s. Identifiable.
