Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Edw t ard Lloyd Averillo is charged with stealing, on the 24th or 25th ultimo, from the person of Jeremiah McHugh, while drunk at Auckland, about sixten £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand; a nearly-new silver Waltham watch, No. 102668, case slightly dinged, value £9; a silver albert chain, known as “ Thames pattern,” value £1 15s; a large silver locket, slightly dinged, with horseshoe on front case, containing a lock of ladies’ hair and two photographs of females, value 7s. 6d.; a G.B.D. wooden pipe, value 75.; a hard blackfelt hat, value 11s.; and a cake of tobacco, value lOd. Identifiable, except money. Description : English, a sailor, about thiry-two years of age, 5 feet 3£ inches high, medium build, sallow complexion, blue eyes, light-brown hair, clean-shaved except light moustache, blue mark on nose, two upper front teeth out, B tattooed on left arm, BP on back of left hand, and bracelet on wrist; dressed in lightgrey tweed suit and soft black-felt hat. He was sentenced at Auckland on the 28th April, 1883, under the name of Edward Avarillo, to two months’ labour for larceny. (See Police Gazette, 1883, page 123.) It is supposed he left Auckland on the 29th ultimo by the steamer “ Wellington ” for the Bay of Islands.

A man, name unknown, is charged with stealing, on the 9th instant, from the shop of Nicholas Smith, George Street, Dunedin, a dark-brown waterproof overcoat, with check lining; value £1 Bs. 9d. Description: Supposed to be a German, about twenty-six years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, medium build, fair complexion; wore brown-tweed coat. He sold the coat on the day it was stolen to R. Isaacs, a second-hand dealer, in George Street.

Between the 24th and 29th ultimo the dwelling of Norman Prentice, at Wyndham, was broken into, and the following stolen: A new eight-day brass clock, round face, white dial, and blue steel hands, slightly rusty; a white-metal barometer in red-leather case, may be marked NP conjoined

a new copper kettle, a pair of lace-up boots, about No. 9 size; a pair of shears for cutting tin, a small bag containg about 101 b. of oatmeal, three tins of salmon, three tins of New Zealand jam, a hunting knife, “ Colquehon knife ” on blade, containing a saw, lancet, scissors, &c., “ Norman Prentice ” on silver plate on handle; and two hatchets; value about £2 10s. Identifiable, except meal and kettle. The hatchets and boots have been recovered.

Stolen on the 2nd or 3rd instant, from the dwelling of John Healy, at Ophir, Otago, a double-cased gold Geneva watch, gilt face, one or two of fingers off, a dent in front case, maker’s name and number not known, value £8 ; and a ladies’ long gold neck-chain, with a piece out of the swivel that attaches it to the watch, value £6. Watch identifiable.

Stolen between the 2nd and 6th instant, from the ministerial residence, Molcsworth Street, Wellington, a new drab carpet, 14J feet by 11 feet 10 inches, blue-and-green-flower pattern; the property of J. L. Kimbell; valuo £5. Identification doubtful. Also three large white single blankets ; the property of the Government; value £1 17s. 6d.

Stolen between the 29th and 31st ultimo, from the office of P. Singer and Co., Moray Place, Dunedin, two £1 notes on the National Bank, the Bank of New South Wales, or the Colonial Bank, the numbers of which are either 189140, 20182, or 223972. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Gullen, who had access to the office. Description : English, about thirty-five years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slender build, fresh complexion, brown hair, thin light-brown beard whiskers and moustache.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the Bailway Hotel, Waianakaura, Otago, a ladies’ nearly-new brown ulster, with cape ; a ladies’ nearly-new black-cloth jacket, trimmed with black fur ;• and a girls’ light-grey jacket, collar and cuffs trimmed with brown velvet, partly worn; the property of James Robertson ; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 24th ultimo, from a hut at High Bank Station, near Methven, Canterbury, a silver lever huntingwatch, “ Thomas Russell and Sons ” on dial, “ Made expressly for L. E. Nathan, Christchurch,” on inside case at hack ; a silver chain, curb pattern, attached; the property of Samuel Inwood ; value £7. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, who gave the name of J. E. Wilson, who occupied the hut with complainant. Description: English, a labourer and wool-presser, twenty-eight years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair, small fair whiskers and moustache, chin shaved, large nose and eyes, round-shouldered, swings his arms when walking ; dressed in blue-cloth paget-coat, dark-print-moleskin trousers with straps at knees, and small tweed hat; carries a grey-blanket swag. He was seen at Dromore Railway Station on the 27th ultimo.

Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from the person of Peter Chalmers, at the Ashburton Racecourse, a brown-leather pocketbook, about 4 by 3 inches, with elastic band, containing four £1 notes and about £1 10s. in silver. Pocketbook identifiable.

Between 6 p.m. on the 24th and 1 p.m. on the 25th ultimo the dwelling of George Glasgow, at Puru, near the Thames, was broken into, and the following stolen: A pair of blucher boots, with burn-marks about eyelet-holes of one, value 55.; an old billycan, value Is.; and lib. of tea, value 3s. Boots identifiable.

Stolen between the Ist and 3rd instant, from the shop of Samuel Searle, King Street, Dunedin, an old black-leather portmanteau, about 2 feet by feet, “S. Searle ” stamped on pocket, two handles in centre, value 10s., containing a ladies’ figured-sateen costume, value £1 55., and a child’s light-blue pelisse with pearl buttons, value 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Ist or 2nd instant, from an hotel at Waikaia, a large open-face gold watch, makers Parkinson and Fradsham, London, No. 1515, plain case, HW in monogram on back ; a steel albert chain, a dark-tweed vest, a patent key, and 6d.; the property of Henry Wilson; value £SO. Identifiable, except money. Suspicion attached to John Welthall, English, a cook, about seventy-five years of ago, about 5 feet 8 inches high, slight build, stooping gait, feet very much turned out, fresh complexion, grey hair, white whiskers, chin and upper lip shaved. He is at present engaged cooking for Joseph Maher, at Wailcaia Flat.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from a tent at Wooded Gully, Johnsonville, a silver-albert chain, curb-pattern, with greenstone pendant, 11 inches long, mounted with silver at both

ends, attached, the property of James Joyce, value £1 55.; and a silver chain composed of four links about f inch long and about li inches apart, small plain round links intervening, a greenstone pendant mounted with silver at one end attached, the property of Stephen Buckley, value £1 ss. Both identifiable.

Stolen on the sth instant, from the office of Henry Caddy, at Wanganui, a £5 note on the National Bank of New Zealand, Wanganui Branch, No. 9818. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Donald Taylor, a butcher, about thirty-seven years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, stoutish build, sallow complexion, dark-brown hair beard whiskers and moustache; dressed in old black-cloth coat, grey-tweed trousers, and Scotch cap. He is still living in Wanganui.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from a till in the bar of the, Lincoln Hotel, Lincoln, about 18s. in silver; the property of David William Bartram.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the hut of John Nenion, at Levels Station, near Timaru, a nearly-new pair of shoes with high heels and steel heel-plates, a nearly-new pair of dark-tweed trousers, a shepherds’-plaid shirt, and a whiteflannel singlot; value £2 6s. 6d. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Fergusson, who slept in the hut on the night previous, and who was left alone in it on the following day. Description: Supposed Scotch, a labourer, about twenty-six years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, dark-liair whiskers and moustache, shaved on chin; wore light-tweed sac-coat and vest, old wliite-moieskin trousers, and soft black-felt hat; carries his clothing, &c., in a dirtywhite seed-bag.

Stolen on the 24th or 25th ultimo, from the office of Philip Stock, Beswick Street, Timaru, an old pair of bed-ford-cord breeches, an old pair of riding-boots, a new browncotton shirt, and a pair of new white-cotton socks; value £1 10s. Breeches and boots identifiable.

Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of Margaret Muir, Moray Place, Dunedin : This offence has been traced by Detective Michael James Geerin, Dunedin Police, to Daniel Dunn and George Mathews. Dunn has been committed to the Industrial School and Mathews discharged. The stolen property has been' recovered, except eleven of the door-keys.

Stolen on the 12th instant, from the shop-door of Messrs. Price and Bullied, George Street, Dunedin, a ladies’ blackwaterproof cloak with hood, six buttons made of the same material down front; value 18s. 6d.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the shop-door of Messrs. Mollison, Duthie, and Go., George Street, Dunedin, a blackleathor Gladstone travelling-bag, 30 by 16 inches, with two compartments ;' valuo £1 12s. 6d. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Peters, a draper, about fifty-three years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, medium build, grey hair beard whiskers and moustache. He is supposed to be still in Dunedin.

On the morning of the 15th instant the ministerial residence, Molesworth Street, Wellington, was broken into, and the following stolen : A wooden box, 12 by 5 inches, covered with brown-morocco leather and lined with blue velvet, containing a silver fish-knife and fork, about 10 inches long, chased with flowers ; the property of the Government; valuo £7. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 12th or 13th instant, from the person of Nathaniel Grimes, Quin Street, Wellington, five £1 notos.

Between the 24th and 26th ultimo the auction-room of Arthur Beauchamp, Lichfield Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and the following stolen: A ladies’ open-face gold Geneva watch, No. 12760, gold dial, dome tarnished and Looks as if it were brass, maker’s name not known, a ladies’ 9-carat gold chain, small oblong-link pattern, both value £3 10s.; and an open-faced Waterbury nickle-silver lever watch, value 12s. 6d. Gold watch and chain identifiable.

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from a box in a whare at Upper Riccarton, Canterbury, a suit of black or blue cloth, coat.sacmake, a sealskin vest, seven or eight linen collars, somo stand-up and others turn-down; a large black necktie, several small neckties, a gold pin with fox-head inside glass, and a gold pin with imitation diamond; the property of William Bradley; value £B. Identifiable.

On the morning of the 18th instant the butcher’s shop of Messrs. Cate Brothers, Cuba Street, Wellington, was broken

into, and a dark-tweed coat, with velvet collar and raised seams, braided round front, rather greasy, stolen; value 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 17th instant, from the shop-door of F. Cohen, Willis Street, Wellington, a black-worsted sac-coat, size 5, five buttons in front, two skirt-pockets, a ticketpocket, and a breast-pocket; value £1 ss.
