Extracts from Victoria Police Gazette.

(From Gazette, 1883, pages 267 and 287.) Ruben Regent, alias Edward Goldsmith, is charged on warrant with breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of Jane Quick, Hotham, on the 7th instant. Description: About fifty years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, slight build, dark complexion, clean-shaved except dark moustache turning grey; wore dark coat, light-tweed trousers, and black boxer hat. (See prisoners discharged week ending the 6th August, ISB3, and criminal photographs of same time.) William McLeish, Alexander McLeish, and Elizabeth McLeish, now in custody, and the above offender, were in a house in Kensington, on the 7th instant, when the Hotham Police entered and found stolen property, the proceeds of several burglaries, in it. The offender Regent violently assaulted the police and got away.—o. 6037. —9th October, 1883.

Ruben Regent, alias Edward Goldsmith, stealing from the dwelling of Jane Quick: It is said the offender was seen in Melbourne on the 22nd instant; he was then wearing a white dust-coat, white soft felt hat, and his moustache appeared to be dyed a light colour.—O. 6037. —31st October, 1883.

Offender is supposed to have gone to Dunedin. lie is a most dangerous member of tho criminal class, and, it is said, if caught in the act of committing a burglary, would not hesitate to wound, or even murder, to effect his escape. Between the night of the Ist instant and the morning o tho 3rd instant, tho London Chartered Bank, Horsham, wa robbed of £BOI in £1 notes, £1,875 in £5 notes, £1,480 in £1 notes, all on the London Chartered Bank ; £477 in gold, and £1,146 in notes on other banks. The outer lock of the safe was unlocked and locked again. The lock of the treasurydrawer and small cash-box inside safe unlocked and left so. The locks are not damaged. A bank clerk slept on the premises.—O. 1406.—5th March, 1884. £SOO Reward. —The London Chartered Bank of Australasia (incorporated by Royal Charter) .—Robbery at Horsham. —The above reward will be paid to any person or persons who will give such information as will convict the offenders. —Charles Guthrie, Inspector and General Manager.— Melbourne, sth March, 1884. Horsham Bank Robbery. —Tho safe is a “ Milner’s,” the door-key of which is numbered 168068; the drawer-keys of the safe are marked “ Left ” and “ Right ” respectively. Inquiry is to be made from all locksmiths if they made, or have been asked to make, duplicates of these keys during the past three years.—0.1406.—12th March, 1884.
