Offences Not Otherwise Described.
(See Police Gazette, 1884, page 7.) Charles White, charged on warrant with disobeying a summons to appear at the office of the Official Assignee in Bankruptcy, Dunedin, was arrested on the 23rd ultimo by Sergeant Patrick Fair, at Wellington, and discharged on the following day, as the warrant was not then in possession of the Wellington Police. Offender left Wellington on the morning of the 25th ultimo, by the barque “ G. M. Tucker,” for Newcastle, New South Wales. Amended description: Ho is quite bald except a rim of long dark curly hair on back of head, whiskers turning grey, round features, roundshouldered, holds his head low; short-sighted, and can see very little without spectacles, which he always wears ; wore dark-tweed sac suit, hard black-felt hat with flat crown, an open-faced silver lever watch, No. 29484, no maker’s name, an English gold guard, gold shirt-studs and solitaires. He had in his possession a portmanteau containing a new blackcloth suit, a brown-tweed suit, shepherds’ plaid trousers, a soft black-felt hat, a pair of elastic-side boots, and several articles.
(Sec Police Gazette, 1881, page 207, and 1882, page 37.) Samuel Rothwell, charged on warrant with personating one Patrick Kelly at the Inangahua County Council election, has been arrested by Constable John Keating, Boatman’s Police, and discharged.
(See Police Gazette, 1883, pages 187 and 195.) Daniel Sullivan, charged on warrant with having uttered a forged cheque for .£lO, at the Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, has been arrested by Constable Henry H. Carr, Otaki Police, and committed for trial on three charges of forgery and uttering.
William Sandpord is charged, on warrant issued by the Temuka Bench, with threatening, on the 20th ultimo, at Rangitata South, to destroy harvest machinery. Description : A native of the North of Ireland, a labourer, about forty years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, fresh complexion, blue eyes, flat face, light-brown hair, light-sandy
beard whiskers and moustache ; dressed in grey-tweed coat, vest with sleeves, coloured-moleskin trousers, lace-up boots, light soft-felt hat or old Scotch cap with peak; carried a swag. He crossed the Rangitata railway bridge on the morning of the 23rd ultimo, and went towards Ashburton. He may look for work in the Hinds District. He threatened to destroy reapers and binders by fire if not paid £I,OOO.
On the 25th ultimo, at Hanover Street, Dunedin, a man suspected of being identical with William Pearce, alias Carroll, obtained 3s. from Margaret Oaten by false representations. Description: Irish, twenty-eight years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, stout build, dark complexion, dark beard whiskers and moustache, point of nose turned to one side; dressed in dark dirty clothes and old soft black hat. He falsely represented that he was a warder in Dunedin Gaol, and that he was sent for the money by complainant’s husband, who is a prisoner in the gaol.
(See Police Gazette, 1883, page 215.) Ann Russell, charged on warrant with having indecently exposed her person, has been arrested by Constable John Gillespie, Palmerston North Police, remanded to Wellington, and sentenced to one month’s labour.
John Margetts is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with having, on the 14th November last, at Auckland, obtained £4 ,15s. from Joseph Caffrey by false representations. Description: English, a bottler, forty-two years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout build, roundshouldered, florid complexion, dark-brown hair whiskers and moustache, chin shaved, Jewish cast of countenance ; dressed in grey striped-tweed suit. He was employed as traveller and collector for John Levy, bottler, Auckland, up to the 10th November last.
George House is charged, on warrant issued by the Masterton Bench, with obtaining, between the 15tli and 30th ultimo, from Joseph Wilson, at Whakataki, Tenui, goods and money to the value of £lO 9s. by false representations. Description: English, about fifty-five years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, slight build; fair whiskers and moustache, turning grey; when last seen wore short black sac-coat, corded pattern, grey-tweed trousers and vest, and round black-felt hat with hard crown; very assuming and bounceable in manner. He falsely represented that he had money in the Bank of New Zealand at Wellington. Ho said that he owned property at Talioraitc, Hawke’s Bay District, and that he had money in the Bank of New Zealand at Napier.
On the Bth or 9th ultimo, at Oruaiti, near Mongonui, a horse, value £5, the property of Charles Thompson, was maliciously wounded with a sharp instrument on the offthigh, which rendered it necessary to have the animal destroyed.
Thomas Brennan is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with having embezzled £7B, the money of the Onehunga Racing Club, for whom he acted as secretary. Description: About thirty years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high,
slight build, very light-brown hair, fair complexion, cleanshaved except fair moustache, swaggering gait, swings his arms about when walking; dressed in blue diagonal cloth suit. It is said that he left Auckland on the 31st ultimo by the steamer “ Wairarapa ” for southern ports, but he could not be found on board the steamer when searched by the police at Gisborne and Wellington. The steamer “ Hawea ” left Onehunga on the 30th ultimo also for southern ports. He may be accompanied by a Mrs. Smith, who has left her husband, a publican at Onehunga. Description: Thirty years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark eyes, oval features, good-looking.
A man, name unknown, is charged with having assaulted Matilda Wilkinson with intent to commit a rape upon her, at South Eoad, near New Plymouth, at 9.45 p.m. on the 24th ultimo. Description: Short stature, stout build, dark whiskers and moustache ; wore dark overcoat and dark billycock hat.
