Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

.Duncan Carmichel, charged on warrant with stealing a spring cart and a set of harness, the property of Henry Urquhart, has been arrested by Acting-Sergeant Christopher Conn, Palmerston South Police, and committed for trial. The cart and harness have been recovered.

Charles S. McGregor, charged on warrant with the larceny as a bailee of £BO, the property of Job Coulam, slept in William Allen’s hut, Waipori bush, on the night of the 9th ultimo. He said that he came from the Canada Quartz Reef, and that he was endeavouring to form a company to work the reef. He wore a heavy dark overcoat, grey-tweed trousers and vest, and old lace-up shoes. It is supposed he has gone to Hindon or Dunedin.

Edwin Wasley is charged, on warrant issued by the Rangiora Bench, with stealing, about the year 1878, at Rangiora, an iron vice, since recovered; the property of William Bell; value about 18s. Description: English, a labourer, about forty years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout build, ruddy complexion, long sandy beard whiskers and moustache, left thumb off; usually wears light-tweed suit, soft black-felt hat, and watertight boots. He worked for Messrs. Hill and Thomas, contractors, Waiau Bridge; he also worked at the Cass Bridge, West Coast Road, and may have gone in that direction or to Westland. He spoke of coming to the North Island. The vice was left on the 7th ultimo at Messrs. Watson, Buss, and Co.’s sale-rooms, Rangiora, for sale by auction, with a number of carpenters’ tools, some of which have since been identified as stolen property.

Stolen between the 17th and 21st ultimo, from the ladies’ waiting-room, at the railway-station, Invercargill, an enamelled washhand basin; the property of the Government ; value 7s. 6d.

Stolen during the night of the 10th ultimo, at Blenheim, a corn-sack, containing a 6 by 8 tent, with fly, rent on top at place for ridge-pole, large blood-stain thereon ; a pair of water-tight boots, nearly new, size 7J ; and a large tin billycan ; the property of Charles Barry. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 18tli and 20th ultimo, from the railway goods-shed at Clinton, a 70-lb. bag of dark sugar, bag marked EEC ; the property of the Government; value 17s. Identifiable.

Stolen during the night of the 21st ultimo, from ashed in Leith Street, Dunedin, two American claw hammers and a square; the property of Robert Lothian; value 13s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 22nd or 23rd ultimo, from the fowlhouse of H. P. Thompson, at Lawrence, two black turkey-cocks; value 16s.

Stolen between the 2nd and sth ultimo, from a carriage in the yard of the City Hotel, Courtenay Place, Wellington, a carriage-lamp, ordinary size, hexagonal shape, mounted with brass, brass globular knob on top, no light at back, and no coloured glass; the property of Benjamin Cohen; value 10s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 20th or 21st ultimo, from on board the barque “ Orient,” at Lyttelton, a box containing 36 lb. of cake tobacco, each cake branded “ Juno the property of David

Anton ; value £9. Suspicion attached to W. Thomas, who deserted from the barque during the night of the 20th ultimo. Description: English, a steward, thirty-three years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, black hair, clean-shaved except moustache, scar on back of one of ears. He is supposed to have gone to Christchurch or Timaru.

Stolen on the 11th or 12th ultimo, at Orepuki, a black turkey-cock, about 14 lb. weight; the property of Janet Watson; value Bs. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 6th ultimo, at Oeo, Taranaki, a new colonial-made saddle, with green-hide seat and bullock-hide flaps, round stirrup-irons, two new white-web girths, and a dirty-white saddle-cloth with round comers; the property of Timothy Donovan; value £4 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 15th ultimo, from the verandah of the residence of John L. Holland, Grafton Road, Auckland, a black rug, lined with imitation tiger-skin, a stain from grease on centre ; value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the fowlhouse of Emma Beatty, Palace Hotel, Gloucester Street, Christchurch, ten fowls of different breeds ; value 3s. 6d. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, about forty-five years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high ; wore a long dark overcoat and soft black billycock hat.

Stolen on the 18th or 19th ultimo, from the fowlhouse of Thomas Barpson, Gladstone Terrace, Christchurch, a white rooster, two white hens, a black hen, and two speckled hens; value 12s. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 17th and 20th ultimo, from the goldmining claim of Chee Ting and Co., at Carna Hill, Waikaia, gold, value about £l, two sluicing-boxes, 12 feet long and 2 feet wide, a sluicing-box 6 feet long and 2 feet wide, four battens 12 feet long, 2 by 1 inch, a pickaxe with handle, a frying-pan, 12 feet of canvas hose, a medium-sized bellows with a Chinese mark on tongue; value about £4. Identifiable, except gold.

Stolen on the 30th or 31st ultimo, from the clothes-line of Henry Earles, Wilson Street, Wanganui, a white-damask tablecloth about 7 by 4 feet, and six children’s holland pinafores ; value 12s. Identifiable.
