Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

A MAN named Johnson is charged, < n warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, witli stealing, on the Ist or 2nd instant, from the shop of Andrew Heavey, Wyndham Street, Auckland, an open-faced gold Geneva lever-watch, since recovered ; a long silver chain, and a gold keeper-ring ; value £B. Identifiable. Description : About twenty-two years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, fair complexion and hair; dressed in black sac-coat, white collar, coloured tie, and hard black hat; respectable appearance.

Norman Morrison is charged with stealing, on or about the 31st ultimo, from the Red Lion Hotel, Stafford Street, Dunedin, a ladies’ gold dress-ring ; value £L ; since recovered ; the property of Henry Walker. Description: Scotch, about twenty years of age, about 5 feet 2 inches high, slight build, sallow complexion, brown hair, large prominent ears; dressed in light-tweed jacket, blue-serge trousers and vest, and cap with peak. He stole the ring while boarding at the hotel.

A MAN who gave his name as Matthew James Henderson, which may be an assumed name, is charged with stealing, on the 11th instant, from Christ’s College, Christchurch, a waterproof mackintosh; value £1 10s.; since recovered ; the property of Arthur Edward Baker. Description : Supposed Scotch, about forty-five years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair beard whiskers and moustache; wore dark clothes and small hard black hat. Identifiable. He sold the coat to H. Smith, a dealer in Armagh -street, to whom lie gave the name of Matthew James Henderson.

John alias Jack Mitchell is charged, on warrant issued by the Wairoa Bench, with stealing, on ihe 25tli ultimo, from the ahop of Stephen Thorpe, at Wairoa, about 401 b. of beef, since recovered; value 10s. Description: A half-caste Maori, about thirty-five years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, stout and well built, beard whiskers and moustache of medium growth, usually employed fencing; when last seen wore dark coat, white-moleskin trousers, soft black-felt hat, and watertight boots.. Be is supposed to have gone to Poverty Bay.

Stolen between the 19th and 30th ultimo, from the Police Station, Xauranga, a six-chambered Adams’s patent central-fire revolver, No. 5719, broad arrow between hiZ on left side of lock-plate; a brown-leather revolver-sheath, the part, near back seam at muzzle slightly perished ; a brown-leather revolver ball-bag, ami eighteen rounds of revolver-ammunition; the property of the Government. Identifiable, except ammunition. The revolver, &c., were on issue to Constable Joseph Hall.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from a tent at Makoia, Manutahi, a double-cased silver lever-watch, maker Euarquet or Erequart, Christchurch, No. 63365, a sixpence with a hole in it, a clay pipe, a stick of tobacco, and a trap-chain; the property of Manson West; value £B. Watch aud chain identifiable. Maoris suspected.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from a till in the shop of William P. Townend, Colombo Street, Christchurch, 20s. in silver, 6s. in copper, amongst which were some tokens, a cedar box 6 inches by 2 inches by 3 inches, a dark-blue leather cardcase, CJC on outside, and “W. P. Townend” written on inside, containing two members’ tickets of the Christchurch Jockey Club for 1881 and 1882. Case and tickets identifiable.

Stolen on the sth instant, from- the person of James McGee, while drunk in the Prince of Wales Hotel, Queenstown, a £2O note on the Bank of New Zealand. Suspicion attached to Martha Squires, English, about forty-two years of age, 5 feet. 1 inch high, stout build, dark complexion, dark hair turning grey ; wore black dress and hat, and grey shawl.

During the night of the 13th instant the shop of Lauritz Henricksen, Victoria Street, Auckland,was broken into and gold and silver waich and jewellery, value £1,496 Us. 6d , stolen All the stolen property haß since been recovered by the Auckland

Police. Charles Brown and John Grappel have been arrested for the offence, and remanded.

Stolen about the 31st March last, from the dwelling O. S. Ellis, Hopeton Street, Newton, Auckland, a double-cased English silver lever hunting-watch, outside ease much worn, “ Trigg, Guildford,” marked on inside of case, an albert chain, square-link pattern, and bloodstone seal, attached; value £6. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from a bedroom in the Criterion Hotel, Kumara, a pair of grey blankets, considerably worn; a shell box, about 6 inches square, no lid, containing a halfsovereign and £1 19s. in silver; the property of James Preston. Box and blankets identifiable.

Between 6 p.m. on the 11th and 8 a.m. on the 12th instant the hay- and corn-store of Alexander Fraser, Moray Place, Dunedin, was broken into, the safe opened and searched, hut nothing was stolen except the key of the safe. There was no money in the safe.

Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man name unknown, English, about thirty-five years of age, about 5 feet 2 inches high, slight build, very dark complexion and hair, clean-shaved except moustache; wore black suit; respectable appearance ;. carried a blue-blanket swag. Identifiable. He was seen at Woodlands on the Bth instant.

Stolen on the 9th instant, from the dwelling of John Sullivan, at Ngapara, a gold finger-ring with cross on shield, and a blue-and-green silk scarf ; value £2 15s. Suspicion attached to Patrick Skillan, Irish, twenty-eight years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, fair hair beard whiskers and moustache; dressed in dark-tweed coat, moleskin-trousers, aud soft black-felt hat. He is still at Ngapara.

Stolen on the 13th ultimo, from the bar of the Ship Inn, Princes Street, Dunedin, two parcels containing a piece of linoleum about 7 by 5 feet, a pair of dark-tweed trousers and a vest; the property of John Charles Johnston ; value about £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 6th or 7th instant, from the shop of Francis J. Arbuckle, Colombo Slreet., Christchurch, a small open-faced silver Geneva watch, No. 36494, FP on case, “ Examined by William Jaffray, 178, Argyle Street, Glasgow,” on dome; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 4th and 6th instant, from the shop-door of Paul Northey, Colombo Street South, Christchurch, a ladies’ new brown ulster, small size ; value 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 7th instant, from the person of Rewe Martieu, while drunk in the Wanganui Hotel, Wanganui, a silver Geneva hunting-watch, No. 20259, makers’ name not known, hourhand broken at centre, spring at bow broken, and hole stopped with cork, a silver albert guard aud a gold ten-frank piece attached ; value £5. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 2nd instant, from the dwelling of Mary McKenzie, at Opunake, a ladies’ 18-carat gold ring, large heavy pattern, MIZPAH in raised letters on outside, MMc on inside ; value £1 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 13th instant, from the shop-door of C. Smith, at Masterton, a roll of blue serge, containing 76 yards ; value £4 14s. 9d. Identifiable by trade-mark tickets. Maoris suspected.

Supposed stolen on the 15th or 16th instant, from the person of John Dochertv, while drunk in the Taradale Hotel, Taradale, a £lO note, supposed on the Bank of New Zealand.

Stolen between the i6th March and the 20th May last, from the hut of William Dove, Ballarat Hill, Stafford, Westland, a double-barrel gun, a slight dent in left barrel near muzzle, soldered on breech of same barrel near stock ; value £5. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 7th and 9tli instant, from the shop of Charles Buttler, at Opunake, a plain new meerschaum pipe, with amber mouthpiece, in a case, PON in large gold gilt letters on inside of case ; value £1 Is. Case identifiable.

Stolen on the 20th instant, from the dwelling of Archibald Carrick, at Waihola, an old open-face silver verge-watch, number not known, white dial broken near the figure six, value £l, and about Bs. 6d. in silver. Watch identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Thomson, who was in complainant’s employment, but left on the day the watch and money were stolen without giving his employer notice. Description : Supposed a native of the colony, about fifteen years of age, medium build, dark hair and eyes, rather long face; dressed in blue-cloth jacket, dark-grey striped-tweed trousers, soft black-felt hat, and lace-up boots. It is supposed he went towards Dunedin.
