Deserting Wives and Families, &c.
(See Police Gazette, 1883, page 48.) John McManus, charged on warrant with deserting his wife, has been arrested by Constable Florence O’Leary, North Invercargill Police, and ordered to pay 10s. per week towards the support of his wife and child.
James Lowery Ferguson is charged, on warrant issued by the Westport Bench, with disobeying an order to pay 10s. per week tow'ards the support of his illegitimate male child. Description : Scotch, a collier, about twenty-eight years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, slight build, fresh complexion, grey eyes, light-brown hair, sandy whiskers and moustache, high cheek-bones, small mole under right cheek-bone, long thin nose, very broad Scotch accent. He was last seen in Westport on the 18th ultimo.
James Brown Weir is charged, on w'arrant issued by the Dunedin Bench, with deserting his wife and four children, at Dunedin, since about the 23rd February last. Description : Scotch, a bricklayers’ labourer, thirty-four years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair beard and moustache, cheeks shaved; dressed in light-tweed suit and black-cloth cap with peak and black-and-white checkband. He will likely endeavour to leave the colony.

Edward Price, charged on warrant of commitment to gaol for fourteen day’s labour in default of paying a fine and costs for digging up a public road atPolhill’s Gully, has been arrested by Constable William Campbell, Wellington Police. He was sentenced at the late sittings of the Supreme Court, Wellington, to three years’ penal servitude for false pretences.

Michael Ryan, charged on warrant with disobeying an order to pay for the support of his child in the Burnham Industrial School, has been arrested by Detective Maurice O’Connor, Christchurch Police, and discharged.

Wllham Walk kr, charged on warrant with deserting his wife and children at Waimate, has been arrested by Constable Thomas Whitty, Hurunui Police, and discharged.
John Johnston is charged on warrant of commitment to gaol for seven days’ labour, issued by the Wellington Bench, in default of paying £2 fine and Gs. costs, for having assaulted James Lockhead, at Wellington, on the 23rd ultimo. Description : A native of the colony, an ironfounder, about nineteen years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, slight build, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, worn short. He left Wellington on the 31st ultimo for Sydney.
John Dippenheim, alias Jack the Liar, is charged on warrant of commitment to gaol for one month’s labour, issued by the Ashburton Bench, in default of paying £1 17s. 6d. due for the support of his child in the Burnham Industrial School. Description : A native of Holland, a ship-carpenter, about fifty-six years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout heavy build, clean-shaved, thick lips, large mouth and nose, speaks good English. He is well known in Christchurch, Lyttelton, and Waimate.

Abraham Woolp, charged with absconding from the Burnham Industrial School, has been arrestad by Constable John Bird, Sydenham Police.
James Holloway and James Morris, alias Cockney, are charged, on warrant issued by the Dargaville Bench, with disobeying a summons to appear at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Dargaville, on the sth instant, to answer a charge of vagrancy and assaulting police. Description : Holloway is English, a labourer, thirty-seven years of age, 5 feet inches high, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, hazel eyes, crucifix on right arm. Morris is English, a labourer, twenty-eight years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair and eyes. (See Police Gazette, 1878, pages 158 and 159.)
John McKenzie is charged on warrant of commitment to gaol for seven days’ labour, issued by the Dargaville Bench, in default of paying £2 fine and 7s. costs for disorderly behaviour. Description: Irish, a gum-digger, about forty-three years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, dark hair and whiskers ; very talkative; served in the 18th Regiment.
