Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

(See Police Gazette, 1882, pages 181 and 189.) William Butler, charged on warrant with having assaulted and robbed Lie Pow, at Roxburgh, was seen in Dunedin on the 25th ultimo, where he is supposed to be employed.

Francis James Hodgson, charged on warrant with stealing 500 sovereigns from the National Bank, at Nelson, has been arrested by Special Constable John P. Ward and Constable John Eoscoe, Nelson Police.

On the 29th ultimo the dwelling of Margaret Morris, Oxford Street, Lyttelton, was broken into, and the following stolen : A ladies’ open-faced gold Geneva watch, gold dial, No. 1146, maker’s name unknown, chased on back ; a ladies’ gold chain, small cable-link pattern; six small white-linen pocket-handker-chiefs, one with black border, marked S; and three imitation-gold sleeve-links, one set with an imitation garnet; value £5. Suspicion attached to Harry Waddle, who was found in the yard at the back of the house. Description : Supposed English, a farm-labourer, about twenty-eight years of age, brown hair, fair beard and moustache; dressed in old dark-tweed suit and soft black-felt hat. He will likely return to the farm of Mr. Angus Murray, at Rakaia, where he has been working. The watch and chain have since been recovered ; they were found in a bedroom of the Crown Hotel, Lyttelton.

Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from the dwelling of Hugh Boyle, Lowcliffe, Hinds, Canterbury, a gold chain with silver pencilcase attached ; value £6 ss. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Robert Hart, English, a cook, forty-seven years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, hair turning grey, brown beard and moustache, small bright blue eyes; wore grey-tweed suit, nearly new; fond of drink. He left Hinds on the 22nd ultimo by train for Timaru. The chain and pencilcase have since been recovered, found under Hart’s bed in his tent.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the dwelling of Sam Lee, at Appleby, near Invercargill, a £5 note, a pair of tweed trousers, two striped-pattern Crimean shirts, three china cups, a large table-knife, and a hammer ; value £1 10s. Identifiable, except money.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the shop-door of Messrs. Kilpatrick and Glendinning, Princes Street, Dunedin, a ladies’ dark-grey cloth mantle, wide sleeves, two tassels down back; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the sth or 6th instant, from the dwelling of Lucy Davis, corner of Cumberland and Howe Streets, Dunedin, a ladies’ self-winding gold hunting-watch, maker’s name and number unknown, MD in monogram on back, and a ladies’ gold albert with gold tassel fastened to bar ; value £25. Identifiable.

Between 10 p.m. on the 30th and 8 a.m. on the 31st ultimo the shop of Messrs. Eulljames and Scott, Brown Street, Thames, was broken into, and a £1 note on the Union Bank of Australia and about £1 in silver stolen.

Stealing money from the person of Patrick Bradley in the Australasia Hotel, Fatea : One of the £5 notes, No. 237866, has been paid into the Bank of New Zealand at Patea. The note was traced to the possession of James O’Sullivan, hotelkeeper, Kakaramea, by whom it was changed for complainant on the day it was said to be stolen. It now appears doubtful whether Bradley lost any money.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the shop of Walter W. Hughes, Willis Street, Wellington, a nearly-new very darktweed waterproof overcoat, with dark-velvet collar, four or five dark-bone buttons in front, one missing, two side-pockels and a ticket-pocket; value £3 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 9th instant, from the shop of John Silk, Molesworth street, Wellington, a girls’ new brown-wincey frock, plaited about 6 inches round bottom, puffed and gathered in front, pointed body ; value 18s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from the person of Angus McMaslin, in the Clarendon Hotel, Timaru, a medium-sized brown-leather pocket book, containing a £5 note, about £3, a deposit-receipt on the Bank of New Zealand, Timaru, for £360, and certificates of character from James Coleman and William Jfenwick. Identifiable, except money.

Stolen between the 28th ultimo and sth instant, from the dwelling of Charles Harrison, at Woodstock Station, near Invercargill, two £2O notes on the Bank of Australasia. Suspicion attached to Charles Forbes, Scotch, a station-hand, forty years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 12 stone weight, light-brown hair beard whiskers and moustache turning grey, hazel eyes, long pointed nose, scar on left eyebrow ; wore dirty light-tweed coat, dirty moleskin trousers with knee-straps, and double-peaked tweed cap. He is identical with Charles Forbes described in the Police Gazette, 1882, page 72. He left Woodstock Station on the sth instant.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the dwelling of Charles Robinson, Harris Street, Gisborne, a tortoise-shell box, 6 by 4 by 3 inches, cover inlaid with gilt metal; a small old-fashioned round gold brooch, open in centre, set with rubies ; a small round silver brooch, open in centre, set with Scotch pebbles, one missing ; a pair of silver earrings, set with Scotch pebbles ; a gold brooch, leaf- and flower-pattern ; a small diamond-shaped locket, with fringe round bottom, attached to which was a small gold chain, twisted-link pattern ; and a pair of round silver earrings, with basket of flowers in centre ; value £l4. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 31st ultimo, from the office of John Sims, Customhouse Street West, Auckland, twenty £1 notes and £5 in silver.
