Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Cornelius Everett is charged, on warrant issued by the Masterton Bench, with stealing from the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton, between the 3rd and 28th ultimo, an operaglass, value £2, since recovered; the property of Thomas Wagg. Description: Supposed English, a cook, forty-eight years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, sallow complexion, grey or blue eyes, brown hair beard whiskers and moustache turning grey, stooped shoulders ; dressed in blue-serge sac-coat, vest, and hat, and grey-tweed trousers. He had been employed as cook at the Union Hotel, Wellington, but left there on the morning of the 2nd instant, supposed for the country.

A man, name unknown, is charged with stealing on the 26th ultimo, from the dwelling of Alexander Colvill, Wairiri Valley Farm, near Glentunnel, Canterbury, a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Christchurch, for £9l 55., drawn by Frederick Bull. Description : Supposed English, looked like a labourer, about forty years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, sandy whiskers worn all round, strong rough appearance; wore a lightish-coloured coat, darkish trousers, and dark-tweed hat; carried a blue-blanket swag. Identifiable by Mr. Charles Sheppard, White Hart Hotel, Christchurch. He presented the cheque to Mr. Sheppard, of the White Hart Hotel, between 9 and 10 p.m. on the day it was stolen, representing himself as Mr. Colvill, and obtained on it a cheque for £ls and £4 ss. in cash. The payment of the £ls cheque has been stopped.

William Barton is charged, on warrant issued by the Hamilton Bench, with stealing, about the 23rd ultimo, from the dwelling of Thomas McDonald, at Komakorau, near Taupiri, two white blankets, one nearly new, the other old, value 145.; and a quantity of sugar and flour, value Bs. Blankets identifiable. Description: English, but looks like a halfcaste, a sailor, forty-one years of age, 5 feet 5i inches high, swarthy complexion, black hair, brown eyes; female head within wreath, pot of flovvers, &c., on right arm, English and American flags, &c., on left arm ; lame. He is supposed to have gone to Waipa or Raglan. (See Police Gazette, 1882, page 180.)

Stolen on the 16th instant, from the dwelling of Sarah Johnson, at Manaia, a white-flannel petticoat, rather worn in front, one of strings sewn on with black-cotton thread, a greywinsey skirt with five rows of scarlet braid at bottom, a nearlynew- calico chemise, and a pair of ladies’ drawers with one large and several small tucks ; value 11s. Identifiable. Also a new white-linen shirt, plain front, open at back, and two linen collars; the property of Lewis Vent; value 10s. Identification doubtful.

About 11 p.m. on the 16th instant a tall man, name unknown, dressed in dirty grey clothes, broke into the dwelling of Aaron Askew, Durham Road, Normanby, and stole a bottle of painkiller, a bottle of wizard oil, two sticks of tobacco, a bar of soap, and about 20 lb. of flour; value 10s.

Stolen between the 15th and 29th ultimo, from a dwelling at Clarence Shearing Reserve, Kaikoura, Marlborough, a sealskin purse containing a £lO note, a £5 note, two £1 notes, a cheque for £6 on the Bank of New Zealand, Kaikoura, drawn by Walter Gibson in favour of William Newport; the property of Alexander Mcßae ; purse and cheque identifiable. Also a pair of blue-cloth trousers; the property of William G. Silverlock, whose name is written on inside of waistband ; value £1 os. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 14th instant, from the dwelling of Arthur Lawrence, at. Kilbrony, near Invercargill, a silver lever huntingwatch, makers Clark and Sons, London, No. 12360; value £6. Identifiable.

Augusta Bruske reports that, at about 10.30 a.m. on the Bth instant, she was assaulted by a man, name unknown, at Kopua, Hawke’s Bay, and robbed of three £1 notes and three half-crowns. Description : About 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build ; dressed in dirty-white moleskin trousers, light checkshirt, large-brimmed greyish hat, heavy watertight boots, and belt with sheath-knife. He had a red handkerchief tied over his face with holes in it for his eyes. This is considered a very doubtful case.

Stolen between the 13th and 15th instant, from the Hotel, t'almerston South, a large greenstone brooch, set in gold, and a keeper-ring, common pattern ; the property of Daniel Jackson ; value £7. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Thomas Gibbs and a Mrs. Culbert who were staying in the hotel. Description: Gibbs is English, a debt-collector’, thirtyfive years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark hair and moustache. Mrs. Culbert is supposed Irish, thirty-five years of age, 5 feet high, slight build, sallow complexion. They went to Dunedin.

On the 26th or 27th ultimo a booth at the Ellerslie Racecourse, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen : Eifteen bottles of champagne, a case of Hennessey’s one-star brandy, seventeen or eighteen bottles of English stout and beer, flve bottles of gin, five bottles of Walker’s whiskey, a box of cigars, four large and three small flasks of brandy, the property of William Henry Corbett, value £l2; a dozen bottles of Hennessey’s one-star brandy, eight bottles of champagne, and a box of cigars, the property of Messrs. Forster and Archard ; value £6 15s. Identifiable.

On the 26th ultimo the hut of Thomas F. Carroll, Round Hill, Southland, was broken into, and a small wooden box stolen. The box has since been recovered.

Stolen on the 6th or 7th instant, from the Port Chalmers Hotel, Port Chalmers, ten £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, three sovereigns, and £1 14s. in silver; the property of Adam Gardner.

Stolen during the night of the 2nd instant, from the person of John McDonaT, while drunk in the Royal Oak Hotel, Matawhero, Poverty Bay, an English silver lever hunting-watch, plain cases, compensation balance, makers Thomas Russell and Sons, London, No. 68227, and an English gold albert chain, round-link pattern ; value £l9. Identifiable.

Between 5.10 a.m. on the 25th and noon on the 26th ultimo the dwelling of Alexander Crowe, at the Armed Constabulary Depot, Wellington, was broken into, and a box in his bedroom bi’oken open and ransacked, but nothing was stolen. Mr. Crowe was in the habit of keeping money in the box, but removed it before leaving his house.

Stolen between the Ist and 7th instant, from a bedroom in the dwelling of William Dunn, at Timaru, an English gold albert chain, long square links connected by small round links a and a medium-sized colonial-gold locket, chased on one side, ; few emeralds on the other side; the property of John O’Rourke; value £7. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Jane O’Donnell, Irish, sixteen years of age, about 5 feet 2 inches high, round features, fair hair worn loose and inclined to curl; usually wears light-grey dress, biaek jacket, and white-straw hat trimmed with white ribbon.

Stolen between the 29th ultimo and Ist instant, from the dwelling of Henry Baulke, Nine-Mile Beach, Charleston, a double-barrel gun, not much worn, English manufacture, right hammer a little loose, and when cocked goes farther back than the other, value £6; and a full-mounted boxwood clarionet,

tone “ A,” with black patent-leather case, fastens with plain buckle and strap at large end, value £B. Identifiable.

Stolen between October last and the 12th instant, from the dwelling of Henry Matson, Heywood Road, Papanui, 25 yards of light-blue merino cloth ; value £3 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from a tent at Pleasant Point, two £1 notes, and a nearly-new pair of white blankets; value £2 55.; the property of Daniel Sullivan. Blankets identifiable..

Stolen on the Ist instant, from the dwelling of Mrs. Sarah Fielding, at Tauranga, a £5 note, four £1 notes, a half-sovereign, and £1 in silver.

Stolen on the llth instant, from the dwelling of John William Liddle, between Awahuri and Feilding, a double-cased silver lever hunting-watch, makers Upjohn and Bright, London, a large gold albert chain with watchkey brazed to it, and a gold double locket attached ; value £l2. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Walter Bardsley, English, a bookseller, about forty years of age, about 5 feet 10 iuches high, slight, build, dark complexion, bald on top of head, beard and whiskers turning grey ; generally wears a straw hat with white turban. He travels through the country selling books. Ho went, towards Palmerston, where he was searched, but the property was not found.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from the shop-window of William Beehan, Hobson Sleet, Auckland, a pair of black-cloth trousers and vest, No. 4 size ; value £1 9s. 6d.

Stolen on the 12lh or 13th instant, from the Egrnont Hotel,, Ilawera, a malacca-cane hunting-whip, plain silver plated head (like hammer head), with GH engraved (hereon, a few black spots on head where the silver has worn off, a silver-plaled band near head with “ Gale and Hunter ” engraved on it; the property of Joseph Jay ; value 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 15th or 16th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Empire Hotel, Wellington, a large American silver-verge bunting-watch, JG scratched on inside of back ease, glass wanting ; the property of Frederick Glick ; value £4. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Scott, Scotch, a cook, between fifty and sixty years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, sallow complexion, grey hair beard and moustache, cheeks shavecL He left Wellington on the 15th ultimo by the steamer “Grafton” for Nelson, with the intention of shipping on board the barque “ Tongoy ” for London.
