Two men, names unknown, are charged with having uttered a forged cheque for £7 10s., to Arthur Owen, in the Egmont Hotel, Hawera, on the 26th ultimo. Description : First is supposed English, looked like a labourer, between thirty and forty years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, ruddy complexion, full sandy beard ; wore rough light-grey tweed overcoat, and soft black-felt hat. Second is supposed English, slight build, thin beard, whiskers and moustache of a reddish tint; wore long overcoat, supposed brown colour, and black-felt hat. Identification doubtful. The cheque is drawn on the Bank of New South Wales, Patea, in favour of William Holmes, and purports to be signed by T. C. Baker, auctioneer, Patea. It is

supposed that the offenders went north by the 6.45 a.m. train on the 28th ultimo. The cheque was taken from the chequebook of George Ludlum, butcher, Kakaramea, about eight months ago. James Reussett and William Ileslop, alias Captain O’Connell, had an opportunity of taking the cheque, as they kept Ludlum’s books at the time it was taken. Description: Reussett is supposed to be Irish, a carpenter, about forty years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, ruddy complexion, sandy hair and whiskers. He is supposed to be at New Plymouth. Heslop, alias Captain O’Connell, is about forty-five years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, dark beard and moustache. Rich Aßn Love is charged, on warrant issued issued by the Marton Bench, with having, on the 30th May last, at Marton, obtained £5 from Stephen Millner by false pretences. Description : A native of the colony, a shearer and station-band, about twenty-five years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, a lump on shoulders, very full chest, short neck, large forehead, very dark complexion, small beard whiskers and moustache. He is supposed to be about Wanganui.

Thomas Wood is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with embezzling, on the, 28th, 30tb, and 31st ultimo, at Christchurch, £4 11s. 3d., the property of James Samuel Slade, by whom he was employed delivering bread and collecting money. Description: A native of the colony, a groom and gardener, twenty-one years of age, 5 feet 10. V inches high, medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair, no hair on face, sear under one eye, smart active appearance ; wore blackcloth suit and round brown-tweed hat. He was seen in Timaru, and said he intended going to Dunedin.

Daniel McDonald is charged, on warrant issued by the Carterton Bench, with embezzling, on or about the 18th May last, at Gladstone, Wairarapa, £SO 165., the moneys of John McCarthy, Edward Burke, Joseph Tidswell, and John 'l’idswell. Description: Scotch, a labourer, forty-five years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair moustache and goatee turning grey, cheeks shaved, very prominent jaw-bones; wore dark-tweed clothes, white soft billycock bat, and lace-up boots. He was last beard of at Napier.

Patrick Murphy and a man, name unknown, are charged, on warrants issued by the Wellington Bench, with assaulting Constable John O’Donovan while in the execution of his duty, at Wellington, at 11 p.m. on the 10th instant. Description: First is a native of Cork or Kerry, a navvy, about twenty-eight years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, rather thin and regular features, light-brown beard whiskers and moustache, active appearance. Second is a native of Cork or Kerry, a navvy, about thirty-two years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, large features, dark beard and moustache, cheeks shaved.

been arrested by Constable Edwin Smith, Dunedin Police, and remanded to Invercargill.

He is identical with George John Baxter, sentenced at Riverton, on the Bth November, 1878, to three months’ labour for false pretences. (See Police Gazette, 1879, page 42.)

A young man, name unknown, is charged with attempting to commit a rape upon Ellen Mary Whitelaw, aged six years, on the Town Belt, near the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin, at 4.45 p.m. on the 11th instant. Description : About eighteen years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, very small moustache, blind of an eye or squints with it; wore darkish clothes, coat or jacket darker than trousers. Identifiable. He was caught in the act by Mr. Fellows, and made his escape, running towards Dunedin.

Wong Wye is charged, on warrant issued by the Cromwell Bench, with having obtained, by false pretences, on the 12th instant, from Judah Solomon, at Cromwell, a brownish greytweed Mosgiel suit, coat buttons to neck, a Crimean shirt, a linen collar, and a pair of socks ; value £3 17s. Description: A Chinese, twenty-six years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, stout build, round chubby face, rather good-looking; wore pilot-jacket with large bone buttons, large dark overcoat, and fur cap, but he may now be wearing the clothes obtained from Mr. Solomon. He left Cromwell on the 12th instant by coach for Queenstown, and thence by steamer on the following day for Kingston. He may have gone to Dunedin or Invercargill by rail. Yong Yin, market-gardener, Naseby, is his brother, and Yong You, of McLaggan Street, Dunedin, is his cousin.
