Incendiarism.
On the morning of the 15th ultimo an unnoccupied fourroomed house at Palmerston North, the properly of Margaret Coleman, value about £IOO, was destroyed by fire. On the 26th ultimo an inquest was held by D. H. Macarthur, Esq., Coroner, to inquire as to the cause of the origin of the fire, when a verdict was returned to the effect that the fire was wilfully caused. The house was insured in the Norwich Union Office for £l5O.
On the morning of the 28th ultimo a boat-builders’ shed at Dampier’s Bay, Lyttelton, the property of Albert Shaw, was, with contents, maliciously destroyed by fire. The shed contained three new boats, boat-builders’ tools, Ac., which, with the shed, were insured in the London, Liverpool, and Globe Office for £175. The property destroyed was insured in excess of its value.
About 9 p.m. on the 6th ultimo, at Otama, Southland, three stacks of corn, the property of John McKenna, value £125, were maliciously destroyed by fire. The corn was not insured.
About 7.30 p.m. on the 25t,h ultimo, at Haye’s Lake, near Arrowtown, a stable, the property of William Paterson, was maliciously 6et on fire, but the fire was discovered and extinguished before much damage was done. The stable and a wool-shed attached were insured for less than half their value.
About noon on the 11th ultimo, at Raincliff, Canterbury, a stack of oats, the property of Michael Gudeusd, was maliciously set on fire, but the fire was discovered and extinguished before much damage was done. The oats were not insured.
On the morning of the 10th instant the courthouse at Otaki, the property of the Otaki Maoris, value about £lO, was maliciously destroyed by fire. The building was not insured.
