Deserting Wives and Families, &c.

Charles Bright, charged on warrant of commitment to gaol for one month’s labour, in default of paying £2 fine and £1 9s. costs, for assaulting Stephen Findlay, at Cambridge, has been arrested by Detective Samuel Brennan, Auckland Police, and has paid the fine and costs.

(See Police Gazette, 1881, page 144.) Godfrey Bentley, charged on warrant with deserting his wife and seven children at Malvern, is a labourer.

Clarence Henry Lyndon is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with deserting his wife and three children at Christchurch since the Ist November last. Description : English, a seaman, twenty-seven years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slight build, grey eyes, light-brown hair, cleanshaved except light moustache, mark of cut between thumb and forefinger of left hand. lie left Lyttelton on the Ist April last, as a sailor, in the ship “ Elsaida,” for London.

Ah Cheong is charged on warrant of commitment to Dunedin Gaol for seven days’ imprisonment, issued by the Lawrence Bench, in default of paying a fine of £1 for mining for gold on Crown lands, at Beaumont, without a miner’s right. Description : A Chinaman, a labourer, about thirty years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, medium build, small thin beard and moustache, looks like a half-caste ; wore blue-tweed coat, coloured-moleskin trousers, and light-soft-felt hat; speaks very good English. Supposed to have gone to the Teviot or Tapanui.

Ah Fan is charged, on warrant of commitment to Dunedin Gaol for three days’ imprisonment, issued by the Lawrence Bench, in default of paying a fine of 10s. for mining for gold on Crown lands, at Beaumont, without a miner’s right. Description : A Chinaman, a labourer, about forty-five years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slight build, no hair on face ; wore blue Chinese jumper, white moleskin trousers, and old dirty straw hat; speaks very little English.

Robert Hall is charged, on warrant issued by the Palmerston North Bench, with disobeying an order, since the 2nd June last, to pay £1 per week towards the support of his wife and family. Description : Scotch, a blacksmith, forty-five years of age, 5 feet inches high, medium build, hazel eyes, light-brown curly hair, high cheek-bones. (See Police Gazette, 1881, page 120.) On the 17th ultimo he was £ll in arrear, and ss. costs.

James McGowan is charged, on warrant issued bv the Christchurch Bench, with deserting his wife and two children at Christchurch since the 20th ultimo. Description : Irish, a plasterer, twenty-four years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, full face, blue eyes, dark-brown hair, sandy beard, whiskers, and moustache, old boil-marks on left side of neck. He left Christchurch for Sydney about three months ago.
