Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, and from Dwellings.

Thomas Hislop, charged on warrant with stealing an overcoat and sealskin cap from the Glasgow Piehouse, Dunedin, the property of James Allan Nicol, has been arrested by Constable Thomas King, Oamaru Police, and remanded to Dunedin.

John F. Willrofft is charged, on warrant issued by the Oamaru Bench, with stealing, during the night of the 31st ultimo, from a dwelling at Big Hill, Peeblcstown, four £5 notes, a £L note, two two-shilling pieces (a small piece cut off one), a threepenny piece, 2£d. in copper, and a pair of striped-moleskin trousers; the property of Frank Barber. Trousers and the twoshilling piece with piece off identifiable. Description : A German, a clerk and labourer, nineteen years of age, 5 feet 9£ inches high, fresh complexion, fair hair, small fair moustache, large nose and mouth, large scar on right side near armpit. He was sentenced to seven days’ labour on the 24th of July last, at Dunedin, for larceny, and on the 31st of same month to twentyeight days’ labour for embezzlement. Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from the dwelling of Charles Cutter, corner of Tuam and Durham Streets, Christchurch, 19s. 6d. in silver, a jack-plane, a smoothing-plane, a dove-tail saw, and two chisels ; value £2 4s. Tools identifiable.

Stolen on the Bth instant, from the shop of Edward Wilkins, Victoria Street, Auckland, two pairs of ladies’ lace shoes, one with heel and toe plates, the other with heel plates only; value 18s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from Border's Hotel, Wanganui, a swag, consisting of a pair of red blankets, a pair of blue blankets, a white shirt, a check-pattern Crimean shirt, two whiteflannel drawers, a pair of grey-tweed trousers, a towel, a comb, and a Roman Catholic Prayer-book with red cover and cross on one side; the property of Patrick Crucan ; value £lO. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Murdoch, a native of Australia, an ostler, twenty-four years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout build, broad features, fresh complexion, fair hair, small fair whiskers and moustache; wore light-grey tweed suit and soft black hat.

Two boys named John and George Murphy have been arrested by Constable John Strathern, Auckland Police, for stealing the iron stock from Robert Tudehope’s shop, and sentenced to forty-eight hours’ imprisonment, and a whipping.

Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from the dwelling of Thomas Grogan, Waiotahi Creek, Thames, a £1 note on the Bank of New Zealand.

Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from a tent at North Taieri Railway works, a black-cloth pilot overcoat, nearly new, cloth buttons, mark of yellow paint on sleeve near right shoulder; a nearly-new pair of elastic-side boots with steel heel-plates, a Crimean shirt, a pair of cotton drawers, and £1 Bs. in silver; the property of Samuel Taylor, Samuel McWilliams, and William Shaw. Identifiable except the money. Suspicion attached lo Henry Harvey, English, a labourer, twenty-six years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, swaggering gait, fresh complexion, fair hair, beard, and moustache, cheeks shaved ; wore black-cloth trousers, and vest with sleeves, tweed front, and moleskin back. If is supposed he went to Dunedin.

Stolen on the 251 h ultimo, from a store in Hunter Street, Oamaru, a pocketbook containing two £1 notes, ss. in silver, letters, and receipts the property of George Gruppler. Purse, letters, and receipts identifiable.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the person of James Roberts, while in the brothel of Ellen Dufty, Octagon, Dunedin, a purse containing four £L notes. Purse identifiable.

The watch stolen from the dwelling of Sarah Ilebberley, at Grey town, is now described as silver, No. 63663 ; the greenstone in the locket is the form of a shield. The watch was offered for sale at the Lower Valley Plains by a Russian, name unknown, who it is supposed came towards Wellington.

About 11 p.m. on the 4th instant the dwelling of William 11. W. Williams, Hereford Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and a square wicker basket, about 1 foot long and deep, and 9 inches wide, with flat cover which opens from centre, and stiff handle across top, on which was written “ Wynn Williams,” containing about three dozen eggs, a blue dinner plate, and 3 lb. of butter, stolen; value 12s. Basket identifiable.

Stolen on the 4th instant, from the dwelling of Jane Wclham, at Milton, a seidlitz-powder box containing a £1 note and £2 10s. in silver.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from the tent of George Lamb, at Balciutha, a dark-tweed suit, doubletbreasted coat and vest with composition buttons, a spot of grease on left sleeve, value £3; a long silver chain, small-link pattern, value £1 ; a nearly-new pair of blue blankets, value £1 25.; an old spottedmerino shirt and a nearly-new striped shirt, value 12s. 6d.; a Post Office Savings Bank book with £IOB to credit, a deposit receipt on the Bank of Australasia for £203 payable on the 4th of March next, a smalt dark pocketbook with clasp containing three photographs (one of a woman and two of men), a pillowcase containing needles, thread, and scissors, a Roman Catholic Prayer-book, two swag straps, and some letters. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 24th ultimo, from the dwelling of Mrs. E. L. Joblin, at Little River, Canterbury, a large square gold locket with square corners, four pearls set in one side, the other side plain ; value £5. Identifiable.

Stolen on the lltli instant, from a bedroom in the Star of the South Hotel, Rangitata, a ladies’ double-case gold Geneva watch, gold face, HK in circle somewhat indistinct on outside of case, number and maker’s name not known, value £10; a ladies’ long gold chain, every alternate five or six links large and small, two oval lockets attached, one containing the photograph of a lady, value £3 10s.; and a very large old silver verge watch, out of repair, value £1; the property of Annie Holloway. Identifiable.

Between 6 p.m. on the 31st ultimo and 9 a.m. on the Ist instant, the shop of Elisha Beardsley, at Christchurch, was broken into, and a black-leather purse lined with chamois, brass clasp, containing two half-sovereigns and 10s. in silver, stolen. Purse identifiable.

Description : A native of the colony, seventeen years of age, 5 feet high, short black hair, crown of head bald.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Caledonian Hotel, Walker Street, Dunedin, a nearly-new black lustre dress with a small tear darned in left side of waist, and a pair of ladies’ button boots, nearly new ; the property of Dearmid MeDearmid ; value £5. Dress identifiable.

Stolen on the Bth instant, from the Queen’s Anns Hotel, Princes Street, Dunedin, a white shirt, open up the body, plain front with red-bone studs; a white-straw hat with blue band, and a dark-grey soft-felt hat with black band; all new, and rolled in brown paper; the property of William Lyon ; value 16s. Identification doubtful.
